Is it bad to be excited at Slipknot's return?

Hoorah. It is true.
Those nine guys from Iowa (try and make that sound cool heavy metal honchoes!) are recording a new album in the formerly abandoned Houdini Mansion, in the Hollywood hills. (now that is cool, Rick Rubin producer).
I really like Slipknot. They sound like a Death metal marching band, I laugh exerytime I hear them.
Their live show is great, they really manage to get that "We are soooo much more fucked up then you guys and we are evil, don't forget evil" thing working (which is pretty hard because they wear masks and unifroms that make them look like angry, psychotic trash collectors).
They call their fans maggots (I love that hate your fans and become even more popular, it's so shatteredhome/refusedtheprozac).
Didn't like Iowa as much as their first Roadrunner release, but they have promised to pound the living shit out of and rape to death all the other...Death Metal marching bands??? (Mushroomhead should watch out, had to stop and laugh while typing that).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It's hard not to rejoice seeing them join the ranks of the once-popular metal/hardcore/pop crossovers (Warrant, Poison, Pantera, Machine Head, Biohazard, Clawfinger, Sepultura, Korn)...

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I still love the first five songs on the Roadrunner debut better than any other music released that year, but Iowa was pretty disappointing (and I plead guilty to overrating it in print at the time of its release). I'm sorta looking forward to the next album because I think they've still got a lot of promise, but this is the very same producer and haunted recording house that pushed the Red Hot Chili Peppers down the greasy ramp to total shittiness.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mushroomhead should watch out"

This strikes me as a bit like saying "Watch your back, Marmalade!" on the eve of The White Album's release, but carry on

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

What makes you think they hate their fans?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it normal to be surprised at their continued existence?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Or that anyone gives a fuck?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, be cautious, dear Nickalicious -- most people think the same thing about Fishbone, I fear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

haha true enough

erico b. rakimington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

turbostevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

if slipknot were japanese and recorded for tzadik everyone would be messing themselves

erico b. rakimington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Not if they still sounded like they do.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

If they were midgets or chimpanzees or something, now that's an entirely different story.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the problem i have with Slipknot (and Korn) is that though they have managed to churn out a pretty effective take (tho impossible to take seriously) on 'def metal' they seem to shift way more apparel and general merchandise OTHER than actual records which often smacks of a cynical marketing drive and affects their credibility noticeably, as does the suspicion they all come from pretty decent backgrounds with no real grasp of what emotional turmoil and angst really is, but that's hugely presumptious of me cos i don't know 'em. their fake nihilism type attitude also grates.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't think real nihilists ever become popular musicians, though...

Dock Miles (Dock Miles), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Karl Hungus and Autobahn disagree.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

the fact that some posters are trotting out the "fake emotions" card (as well as the merchandising card) is really disheartening.

erico b. rakimington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

next you'll be telling me cannibal corpse aren't really cannibals or corpses!!

erico b. rakimington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

toto, i want to go home

erico b. rakimington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

>the fact that some posters are trotting out the "fake emotions" card (as well as the merchandising card) is really disheartening.

Agreed. How come lately a totally transparent toughguy pose is only okay for young black men, and not young white men?

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

seconded. every artist has some sort of pose, even if its not conscious. although slipknot's not really my thing, i don't see why their background should make them a bad band.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Brandon,

You description of them as a "death metal marching band" makes me want to listen to Slipknot again, even though I have listened to them and know that I don't really like them. What I'm saying is death metal marching band music sounds like the best thing ever and you should start one!

Also, I will say that I think Sepultura did the metal+bongo percussion madness thing better than Slipknot on Roots.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

death metal marching band

I read this as 'death metal munching band,' which strikes me as more apropos in several senses.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

>Sepultura did the metal+bongo percussion madness thing better than Slipknot on Roots.

To a large extent, you're right. It's particularly noticeable on the Sepultura live album Under A Pale Grey Sky (which is great! Everyone should own it!).

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, I'll give 'em another chance, but the thing is with them...I had heard so much that sounded cool, like oh my god NINE DUDES! MASKS! SO MUCH DRUMS!!! and I was like "dude, this is gonna be the shit" and it sooooooo didn't live up to what I had wanted it to sound like. The way they actually sound <<< the way they sound on paper.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

erm..."I had heard so much about them that sounded cool..."

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Would you take Rammstein more seriously?

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Rammstein is much funnier.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

And they have better riffs.

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Slipknot's cool. I like how you see them as a 'death metal marching band.' I've always seen them as 'My First Death Metal Band" for the kids who never heard Morbid Angel or Deicide.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

as disheartening as seeing eight year olds in Nirvana hoods? actually that doesn't bother me much at all but reminds me of that lame attitude of thinking you're 'alternative' just because of what you're wearing or what you listen to, which in the case of SLipknot, Marilyn Manson, Korn and co. amounts to nothing more than an alternative of mainstream rather than a genuine alternative and antithesis scene/style. so they all might as well just stop bawling and write songs about partying - like erm, Hed(PE) or Limp Bizkit, heh

nobody said it was okay for blacks and not whites as far as i'm aware? fake angst and dubious macho posturing are equally tiresome to me.

Rammstein are a bit more intriguing tho - they've been accused of being fascists, even Nazis in the past haven't they?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

they should really think of a name change. Balloonknot?

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Rammstein at Melbourne Big Day Out '01 from the grandstand some 200-300 metres away from the stage. Okay, I may have taken acid that day, but I thought the whole gutteral roaring and self-immolation from the lead singer was hilarious.

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Thursday, 13 November 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

re:what 'erico' said - if they were from japan they'd be o-k because everything is supposed to be fake and crazy and novel there and the burden of Western Manson 'fake-alternative' and authentic sacred dark emotion and angry white guy annoyance factor would vanish. i mean, it's obviously not what nickalicious meant in the crack about "midgets and chimpanzees" but.....

scissors (Honda), Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't think real nihilists ever become popular musicians, though...

I only want to listen to nihilist boy bands.
