ruff warehouse music, who makes the best Dance Mania type trax?

gareth, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does Green Velvet count? :) Robert Armani in general is pretty good. Sneak, Rush, it's all good.

Omar, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, I was going to say Green Velvet!

Apart from Green Velvet though the best tracks in this style have gotta be DJ Sneak's "Disco Erotica" and Armando's "Radikal Bitch (London Fierce Pussy Mix)".

Tim, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I kind of think of Green Velvet as too rigid and harsh to really fit in here (didn't Jones invent this persona to do something different that wouldn't necessarily work in the house sphere?). it doesn't have the swingyness or bounce that, eg Armani has.

there is a wonderful DJ Deeon track that i would like to add in here, but i cannot remember which one it is (tho it is on Dance Mania i think)

gareth, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Good point. If I could twist this question around, I'd be interested in knowing what everyone's favourite albums/compilations of this sort of music are. I ask because I want more.

Personally I'm quite taken with the two Future Sound Of Chicago albums and the Radikal Fear compilation Felix Da Housecat's label put out, but I wanna get my hands on some Armani by the sounds of things.

Tim, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sadly i don't have enough Armani, but an excellent place to start would be the Fuse Box Ep (ACV) from circa 94. i hear that his Hardfloor rmxs are good but i haven't heard them and cannot comment.

gareth, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My favorite artist as far as ghetto house goes is early Neil Landstrumm, search Index Man ep, Inhabit The Machines ep, M-cap ep, and Brown by August lp, all on Peacefrog. Also look into the early Blue Arse Fly material, and early Cristian Vogel.

As far as Chicago guys go, Steve Poindexter's release on Djax are definitely something to look into. Mike Dearborn is another guy to check out. Just About anything that came out on Relief.

Granted all of this stuff is much rougher and harder than what you are looking for, but when you say ruff dancemania type stuff this is what I think of.

Doesn't Paperclip People somehow fit in here. I'm imagining some sort of ruffed-up house, so that could be yr 'Climax' and 'Floor'. Yeah?

Omar, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

we could turn this into a vague/broad house thread of some description.

Claude Young and Ralph Rosario search and destroys please...

gareth, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pipe down you claude young fans, i'm going deaf already!

i shall have to buy some stuff at random it seems. i will try and keep this thread alive by saying that perhaps Clementine's Hed Nodder (DJAX) might thread the bill here, and remains, for me at least, the only time Luke Slater really hit top form (although the rest of the 12" double pack is mediocre)

gareth, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Keep it going Gareth, I want to learn more. Claude Young - 'Hip Hop DJing with Techno records' sounds fab, but tell me where to start. Second Generation Detroit I'm told. Same with Ralph Rosario.

stevo, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah sorry about that. Young's latest album 'Patterns' on DJAX is pretty good, although for the most part it contains pure DJ-tools: minimal funky grooves with some beautiful contrasting big city melodies. Excellent techno in the Mills vein, but way better than anything he has done in years. There are some tracks scattered on compilations/mix-cd's which always are good, but never earth- shattering. Utter classic as a DJ. His 'DJ Kicks' doesn't really capture the magic though, although it has some of that stuttering crossfade shit that I love.

Omar, Tuesday, 18 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

claude did a dj kicks album? i didn't know that. i wished i'd seen claude dj, he always seemed to be on when i was doing something else. mills playing was ace tho.

i picked up a cajmere mix cd from 98 the other week, which has this ace track called 'c-line woman' i think (cant remember who its by). the rest of the cd is ok, but that is superb

gareth, Tuesday, 18 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I think it's the 3rd DJ Kicks album (check at www.k7.com you can even hear all the albums in real audio). It's a relentless mix, what you would call banging techno (I still like the Stacey Pullen mix best). You should check him out when he spins, great fun, doesn't take himself too serious, etc.

Did anyone hear Green Velvet's 'La-la land'? Great track, he sounds almost like Bowie on it.

Now what about Moodyman?

This thread has probably long since died but this sort of music is done best on Dance Mania. Look for DJ Deon, one particular cut "House- o-matic" a real floor filler, an awesome cut. Also Check DJ Funk for more mad tunes. Others include DJ Milton, Paul Johnson and err cant rememeber any more at the moment. I'd say that of all the Dance Mania I have heard ( a fair bit) DJ Funk and Deon are the best bets. That reminds me - Paul Johnson has a huge catalogue of cheeky, funky rough house. Check out some of his early albums on Peacefrog. He has a heap of stuff on Dance Mania too. Onto Robert Armani: what a guy. I have all his ACV stuff. The albums are primarily hard nosed chicago techno/acid. There is always the odd funkier or cheeky cut, but check Dance Mania for this side of the man's work. Armani albums to own are "Right to Silence" and "Madman stand" both definitive classics.
