Are there any actual statements by the band etc abotu the instrumentation on the new album?

Everyone says that melody in 12:51 sounds like a synth... to me it sounds more like a severely compressed and distored guitar.

Pitchfork recons the drums on "The Way It Is" and "Meet Me in the Bathroom" are sampled or partly sampled

and whats this talk about organs?

I'd be inclined to say "You Talk Way Too much" in the Blonide / Heart of Glass sections sounds closer to a bass synth than anything else on the whole album.

anyway is ther eany truth / reliable sources for any of this commentary?

I can't believe I still get into discussions about this kind of stuff (just tried to explain it to someone last night in fact). Who the f*ck cares whether it's an instrument or a sample. My favorite rock album ever, MBV's 'Loveless' has almost entirely sampled drums. "Real" instruments no longer even connote, let alone validate authorship and authenticity. Welcome to the desert of the real everybody. The author is dead, he is no longer present, even when he's on stage. It's all mediated blah blah blah vomit.

This album is so average.

I just want to know!!! - I actually really like the album, independent of whether it was "played" or "sampled" etc..

However in the interest of trainspotting! I woudl simply like to know if its sampled / machines / etc.....

(and ddrake: this was not intended to be a discussion of the "quality" merely how was it created!??)

sorry to try and bite your head off Savin. Apparently there is a debate about this question. Try searching the other strokes threads...

In "Spin" the guitarist says it's all guitar on the album-- it's just put through various distorters. That includes 12:51.

With triggers, which are used on all sorts of recording for a long time, the drums could be played and sampled.

When you see a band at a basketball arena or one of those big outdoor sheds, there is a very good chance the drum sounds are triggered samples or a blend of mics and samples.

The real question always is does it sound good?

"It is the Strokes" = "It does not sound good".

(That may be a lie, but I would never admit it here.)

Spencer, I got into a ridiculously long discussion about this on a message board on a famous jazz-fusion drummer's website recently, with a bunch of older Supreme Rockists. It was a harsh reminder that ILM = not the rest of the world, by far.
