Did I miss the thread on the Kevin Shields interview in Arthur Magazine #7?

where Kevin talks with Hua Hsu about The Rapture, The Deftones, Drum and Bass as well as a whole slew of playing catch up with Kevin Shields and other veiled references to a current musical relationship with Colm and his current remaster and rerelease of Isn't Anything, Loveless and 2CDs of MBV singles/rarities from 1987 onward?

Unfortunately it's not available online just yet due to a glitch (uh... Shakey Mo to thread?) but it starts out real well but gets a little rambly towards the end.

Yeah, I just stumbled across that as well the other day. Good interview! The rambles are still info packed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

On a related note - I recently picked up a great back issue of Tape OP magazine where he discusses the way he recorded a lot of MBV stuff. Surprisingly, it was lighter on the FX, heavier on the EQ's than you'd think.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, I've fallen behind on my Arthur-related posting duties...

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and I'm not sure what the problem is with the on-line version. I know they periodically have issues getting the more graphics-heavy stuff up there...?

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

referring to yourself in third person = dud. Other than that, a decent interview.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"referring to yourself in third person = dud. "

haha! Totally. I didn't notice that meself tho.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked the interview, but sometimes I wish somebody did a good ol' bait-n'-switch with Mr. Shields. Y'know like act all ass-kissy (like most interviews with him) then turn on a dime on him, going off on why he's so lazy, how he doesn't deserve the acclaim if he can't back it up, etc., etc. I don't know why, but reading something like that would really appeal to the misanthrope in me.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe we should turn this into a "spiteful questions to ask during a Kevin Shields interview" thread.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Why did you rip off my looks?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

btw, Jay's not being very forthcoming re: their technical difficulties. All you losers will have to get off your ass and get a hard copy! (it's worth it) Also: Arthur got a write-up in the new issue of Wire. Huzzah!

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It would be great if someone could scan these things.

Orange, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah. makes me wonder what he spoke of the deftones...

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't remember that bit. He was slightly deprecatory of the Rapture tho.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

He talked about how he liked the Deftones, which given that they tend towards a more overt goth-via-Pumpkins feel doesn't surprise me much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Agh. I'm sorry about not being forthcoming. Tell ya what: I'll bring the article in to work tomorrow, have it scanned and email it to anyone who wants a copy. I've got an Arthur Russell interview that some folks would dig reading, also, but the scans are so-so.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

why doesn't he mention why his new songs are so mediocre?

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 13 November 2003 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Because they aren't, nyah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 November 2003 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think the abrasive approach would yield many results from Mr Shields, if the one time I met him was anything to go on. It was at the aftershow party when Primal Scream played at Hammersmith Palais a few years ago. When I asked him what it was like playing with Primal Scream, he murmured the Ralph-from-Ralph&Ted-worthy (or Father Stone from Father Ted-worthy, I suppose) reply: 'it's good, yeah'.
No more conversation was forthcoming!

M Carty (mj_c), Thursday, 13 November 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Jay Vee
