Traktor 2.5 -- external mixer function

On the verge of purchasing Traktor 2.5 for mac. BUT, before i do so:

1. Has anybody been using Traktor 2.0 or above with an external mixer connected to their laptop?

2. If so, what glitches did you notice?

3. What upgrades or additional hardware were required?

Thanks in advance.

... anyone?

Danny Quintana (danny quintana), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ive just got 2.5 but havent used it yet - ill let you know.

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

cheers. yeah, it's not so much an analysis of the program's strengths and weaknesses i'm looking for -- i just wondered if there were any hardware difficulties, glitches etc with using an external mixer.

Danny Quintana (danny quintana), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

why would there be problems with an external mixer?

if you are using an external mixer you need a multi output soundcard that will probalby ship with more robust drivers than some crappy stereo number and hence be less likely to cause glitches / problems than when "not using an external mixer.

most people find it easier to use an external mixer unless you have a midi device to control that damn crossfade knob.

two years pass...
i wanna move to traktor dj studio... but tell me, should i go for 2.6 or 3?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 24 March 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

go for 3, without a doubt. 4 deck mixing, great effects, aac support, tons of better sorting options...all around great update.

biz, Friday, 24 March 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

sweet... i'd just heard weird buggy rumours.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 24 March 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

watch out with 3 though, the drm-protection gets to be kind of a pain. i wasn't able to play this batch of mp3s because of it the other day, so i decided to convert them all into .aifs then re-rip them into mp3. the files worked for a couple of days, then refused playing again. WTF? does anyone know a better workaround?

Jena (JenaP), Friday, 24 March 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

well, since i haven't and won't be buying any tracks with DRM, i don't have to worry about that, however, Traktor has always had some bugs and it wouldn't surprise me if the new verson has some too. it's not a perfect program but 4 decks plus the Allen and Heath filters/efx are great additions

biz, Friday, 24 March 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah were they DRMed mp3s Jena?

4 decks is not so important to me!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 24 March 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

4 decsk not important? they will be when you master 2. having dedicated decks for loops and samples is very important for me. makes creative mixing easier.

biz, Friday, 24 March 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

if those DRM tracks were tagged exactly the same way, maybe Traktor still had the DRM thing attached to them...Traktor stores info about the songs in some file so maybe try altering the ID3 tags? other than that, i don't understand why that wouldn't work around the problem.

biz, Friday, 24 March 2006 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah they were mp3s, biz you might be right about the name-tags, I'll go change them and let you know if that works.

Jena (JenaP), Friday, 24 March 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

Longs story short, nothing seems to work, it's like these files are posessed. I can't believe that after turning them into .aifs, back into mp3s, renaming the id3 tags and the file names, they still won't friggin' play!

Jena (JenaP), Friday, 24 March 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Can you do that 'unplug the record deck' effect on Traktor 3? (where the track slows to a halt, as if you've pulled the power on a real vinyl deck)

Also, do you get an EQ screen with Traktor? I'm using Mixmeister and it's almost perfect bar a few things (no pitch shift, no 'unplug the deck function', no way of adjusting or cutting the high/low/middle) but I'd really like a program with an inbuilt equaliser.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 24 March 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

if you can do the unplug effect i'll be a really happy man

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 24 March 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

(no pitch shift, no 'unplug the deck function', no way of adjusting or cutting the high/low/middle)

sounds pretty far from perfect!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 24 March 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

Nah, it's good. I find it easier to have the waveforms on screen in a row, I like the layout of Mixmeister. And the no pitch-shift function does help in a way: when you're mixing from one song to one with a different bpm it gradually speeds up/slows down the song but keeps the pitch the same so it doesn't sound all pink-perky/Leonard Cohen. And I suppose you can do the high/mid/low stuff on the club's mixer so that's not terribly bad, just a bit annoying.

Does anything do the unplug effect? Is it possible to do it in advance on Cool Edit or Wavelab?

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 24 March 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

by "the unplug effect" do you mean what it sounds like when you hit the start/stop button on a turntable?

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 23 February 2008 12:51 (seventeen years ago)

yeah where it slowly grinds to a halt. ive since found a workaround for this, but i rarely use it anyway, it's a bit too gimmicky

NI, Saturday, 23 February 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

i remember adjusting the bass/treble in mixmeister.
i think you right click on the track and create handles and drag them up and down, and end up with a little graph.
not so great for live mixing, but possible.
haven't installed it on my new system or i'd double check...

m0stlyClean, Saturday, 23 February 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

the newer version has onscreen knobs to adjust the hi/lo/mid, good for linking up to a behringer external mixer, but you may as well do all that on the main mixer anyway.

NI, Saturday, 23 February 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

i do wish it made it easier to do those gimmicky tricks like scratches, spinbacks and unplug-the-decks. ableton seems to work in a very similar way so im hoping there'll be plugins for that to do the job.

NI, Saturday, 23 February 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

four years pass...

Yo, anyone wanna recommend me an entry-level piece of hardware to use w/ Traktor? I mostly just wanna learn how to use it and maybe DJ at someone's party or some shit. I'm thinking the Numark Mixtrack Pro but really I have no idea.

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 02:51 (twelve years ago)

It should be under $300 btw, or less if it doesn't have a built-in soundcard

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 02:56 (twelve years ago)

how about the keyboard

the late great, Monday, 31 December 2012 03:21 (twelve years ago)

not kidding

the late great, Monday, 31 December 2012 03:21 (twelve years ago)

free

the late great, Monday, 31 December 2012 03:24 (twelve years ago)

I use the Behringer bcd 3000 with traktor pro. It has its own built-in soundcard and run ps for like ~$150. Never had a problem with it in abt 4-5 years of two-three nights of use a week (but I've entirely avoided using the jog wheels, if you want to do any scratching this isn't the setup for you).

Clay, Monday, 31 December 2012 03:26 (twelve years ago)

tlg otm

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Monday, 31 December 2012 03:30 (twelve years ago)

idk is the keyboard really adequate? Also I need an external soundcard anyway if I'm actually going to start doing something

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 03:50 (twelve years ago)

right, the numark looks pretty good for that

the late great, Monday, 31 December 2012 03:59 (twelve years ago)

the keyboard is adequate if you have external sound and you're willing to not look like a dj

the late great, Monday, 31 December 2012 04:00 (twelve years ago)

how do you futz w/ the levels and faders and stuff in realtime w/o using the touchpad? Is it easy w/ the keyboard?

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 04:39 (twelve years ago)

haha no it's not easy

you gotta go into the preferences and assign keys to various functions, like up one notch or down one notch every time i press o or p, or filter 2 on when i push i. i find it useful for controlling filters whereas with the faders i use the mouse

the late great, Monday, 31 December 2012 04:55 (twelve years ago)

it's a pain in the ass. if you can afford a controller buy one.

the late great, Monday, 31 December 2012 04:56 (twelve years ago)

ya I mean I just did a crazy work week and got overtime + christmas bonus of like 100 + christmas money + amazon gift card, and it seems v silly to spend 100 on just a soundcard when i can spend an extra 80 and get a mixer/controller/whatever as well

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 06:49 (twelve years ago)

though it WOULD be nice to get something w/ inputs so I could rip all my vinyl

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 06:49 (twelve years ago)

If you have access to a record player and a receiver you can probably rip your vinyl?

Clay, Monday, 31 December 2012 07:13 (twelve years ago)

spend 200 on a soundcard

Tome Cruise (Matt P), Monday, 31 December 2012 07:23 (twelve years ago)

If I am spending 200 on a soundcard it better have a mixer built around it too bcz I will not have much left to spend on one.

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 07:24 (twelve years ago)

My budget realistically is like $300, if that

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 07:24 (twelve years ago)

oh i already said that oops

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 07:24 (twelve years ago)

and yeah I have a record player and a receiver but I need a way to get it into my computer that's not line in bcz that will sound like ass

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 07:25 (twelve years ago)

Put that money aside, wait another month or two while you save a bit more and buy the Kontrol S2 or S4. Well worth the money and they will make learning and using Traktor fun and easy.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 31 December 2012 07:50 (twelve years ago)

With my income now it would take me like 4 months to save up to buy that.

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 08:13 (twelve years ago)

I mean what does the S2 have that justifies 3x the price of the Mixtrack Pro?

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 08:15 (twelve years ago)

If space is not an issue, I would recommend getting a second hand analogue DJ mixer and a sound card with two stereo outputs. Buy a cheap USB keyboard and put stickers on the keys which control the Traktor interface.

With this setup you can easily add a record, or CD deck to your setup if you feel like it at a later date, and the analogue mixer will be more responsive than a digital equivalent.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 31 December 2012 13:07 (twelve years ago)

I'd have to look at the Mixtrack Pro to compare but the Kontrol series is perfectly matched to Traktor's layout, super intuitive, high quality built-in soundcard, etc etc. Check out some youtube vids of people using them to see what they can do. Maybe it's not the right option for you but I firmly believe they're the best mixer for Traktor.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 31 December 2012 18:16 (twelve years ago)

also depending on where you live and how much functionality you actually need you might just want to go on craigslist and buy whatever some 12 year old is selling secondhand

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Monday, 31 December 2012 18:31 (twelve years ago)

Oh ya, if I rly got serious about it and started actually doing gigs and shit and making money I would probably upgrade to the Kontrol hardware at some point, but from the videos I've seen the Mixtrack seems very competent at its price point.

nicki mINOJ (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 31 December 2012 19:55 (twelve years ago)

also depending on where you live and how much functionality you actually need you might just want to go on craigslist and buy whatever some 12 year old is selling secondhand

this is good advice as every wannabe DJ buys a controller and then realises that they dont have the time for it. Theres a good market in both Traktor and Maschine 2nd hand, but with Native instruments are picky with second hand licences so make sure you are buying the licence AND the hardware.

I am selling a Faderfox DJ3 on ebay at the moment, but you'd have to pay for shipping from the UK.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Monday, 31 December 2012 20:40 (twelve years ago)

these things are all horrible but this one has a few features that are sorely lacking from others in this price range

http://www.adjaudio.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ItemNumber=1460&Category=23

has balanced xlr outputs, so you can go direct into active monitors or an amp without worrying about interference and you'll have a nice hot signal. 2 rca inputs with ground so you can connect a turntable for when things go tits up.

Crackle Box, Monday, 31 December 2012 20:45 (twelve years ago)

That looks good!

Apparently the soundcard in the Mixtrack Pro isn't ASIO-compliant (though apparently with some fucking around you can get it to work with ASIO4ALL); how big of a dealbreaker is this, really?
