Simply Red D/D?

I've just seem Mick Hucknall announced on the National Music Awards as the best British Soul Voice. The fact is, he is. (Just seen him do an untouchable 'You Make Me Feel Brand New'.

So why are his solo/self penned records such shit?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

because he is an boring assmunching twat.

"The ginger bloke over there? Mick Hucknall."

*cut to overblown Simply Red live idiocy*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, he is. True.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"Stars" is classic.

bahtology, Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I've sobered up...

No, truly, his voice was superb last night. I also seem to recall Simply Red appearing on a Sounds giveaway single before they'd released a record (along with the Mary Chain?) and the NME (in the days when it mattered) drooling over "Money's Too Tight To Mention". Where did it all go wrong?

*realises he's talking about fabulously wealthy bloke with supermodels hanging off his arm*
*reconsiders final question*

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 13 November 2003 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The magazine freebie was called The Cut. Featured Style Council, Mary Chain, Simply Red and the Redskins as I remember.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Thursday, 13 November 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I must admit that I am more interested in the pre Simply Red careers of both Hucknall and the rest of the band. Not least because:

I have heard that "Holding Back the Years" was originally recorded by Hucknall's pre-SR band Frantic Elevators

I have heard Frantic Elevators described as a punk band

so naturally I'm eager to hear the Frantic Elevators' version of the song, which I can't imagine being done in a punk style!

but also, didn't some other members of SR used to be in the Mothmen, and before that Durutti Column? Now I love Durutti Column and I'd be interested to know whether Mothmen had any recorded output and what that sounded like.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 13 November 2003 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got an old Frantic Elevators single (Voice In The Dark / Passion / Everey Day I Die) but not Holding Back The Years although I believe that was released as a single and I think there's also a CD about of all the Frantic Elevators stuff.

The stuff I've got I think I'd be inclined to describe as post-punk; typical late '70's / early '80's Manchester and at the same time not a million miles from John Foxx-era Ultravox! / early Tubeway Army.

I too had the misfortune to catch his performance last night and I thought it was absolutely dreadful - the guy clearly just doesn't have the range to carry off "You Make Me Feel Brand New".

The accounts I've heard of how he's treated his band-mates / members in the past suggest the guy's a total arsehole too.

However he is involved with the Bood & Fire reggae reissue label so he can't be all bad....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 13 November 2003 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait a minute -- "Everyday I Die" IS a Tubeway Army song! Unless it's just a shared title. Stewart, I must know more!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 November 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Different song, same title, Nedwin.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 13 November 2003 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh if only. Partially because I was wondering how Hucknall would have delivered the line "I unstick pages and read."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 November 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm very pleased someone else saw fit to post a thread about Huckers on the NMA show - it's true, he put in a pitch-perfect performance, but I probably wouldn't have had the balls to say so, had other people not already done so. Ho hum.

I had "every day I die" on in the car this morn.

"Holding back the years", imagine the song, without the "I'll keep holding on" bit, played by a guitar, bass and drums only. With Mick Hucknell, obv. That is the Frantic Elevators version.

I often wonder if he has a yearning to do something in his old Beefheartian root style.

He seemed to like it well enough at the time.

Mark G, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

I *still* have not heard the Frantic Elevators version of Holding Back The Years. Quit looking for it actually. Has it somehow magically come available in the last couple of years? It's true there's a CD called "Mick Hucknall & Frantic Elevators - The Early Years" but that only includes the 6 tracks on their first two singles, and I have never been able to find these other three singles listed in my book here, one of which is Holding Back The Years. Songs I still need are: Production Prevention, Searching For The Only One, Holding Back The Years, and Pistols In My Brain. If anyone can point me in the right direction, please do. Like I said, I quit looking for this stuff.

I was "couchsurfing" - and calling it that! - back in '99 during my mercifully brief stint of homelessness.

On what planet is this a new expression???

Ok me & someone are having a tiff: does "Holding Back the Years" sound like Neil young, or does it sound very little like Neil Young? Here is the song, for ref:

A friend recently put to me that isn't it odd that Men and Women doesn't really have any of SR's "big" hits, despite being part of their imperial phase. And yeah, nothing from it really survives I don't think. Wet Wet Wet's second album Holding Back the River might count as an invisible imperial phase album too (I do not hear "Sweet Surrender" anywhere).

It's Only Love and If You Don't Know Me By Now have a profile still is the difference

you can see me from westbury white horse, Thursday, 12 October 2023 03:02 (one year ago)

Wow It's Only Love does? I had no idea. I thought his/their Every Time We Say Goodbye still had some traction or was at least as known as It's Only Love but maybe not. It's hard to figure out why Stars was *such* a monster, either way.

piscesx, Thursday, 12 October 2023 03:19 (one year ago)

Well I feel like it does at least, I have heard it from time to time. And yeah I don't understand the scope of the Stars phenomenon either - it's not like it was piggybacking off the success of one massive single plus guests like the Wet Wet Wet record of that time would have been (and which was the poorest selling of the big WWWW LPs anyway).

just reading the lyrics and I'm actually a bit confused about the meaning of back four here?

In the middle of the night
When the time is right
Sexily right
I'm gonna do the right thing

I'm feeling hot
I ain't ever gonna stop
To get what you got
You better take what I bring

I feel it now
Much harder now
More than any old how
Say you feel the pain

Feel I'm getting harder now
(Get off your back four, get on top more)
Feel I'm sinking farther down
(Get off your back four, get on top more)
I told you to stop
You're sleeping out a lot
You told me get lost
Where's your understanding

I feel it now
Much harder than I've ever done now, now
Hey, I'm gonna do the right thing
