luomo sapiens - your_ears_are_alright?

luomos, lend me your ears - this shit is wiggedy wack, just desn't succeed - the tawdry afterburn of a minor moment, long past. sorry but to all the wack daddys in the place - you people digging this years luomo album really haven't much taste/clue.

granted there were a couple of pleasing/innovative/distictive tracks on the first album which were fresh for a few weeks when they first came out in 2000/1 or whenever but this praise really only in the cotext of the banality and played-out-ness of the berlin/cologne/deep yawn house sounds of the period (which themselves have barely evloved since 1992-3).

it has been diminishing to negative returns ever since. the progeny of the progeny of an insubstatial and unsustainable meme. and you give this currency now? you can't hear this flatness? why? are you ears so naive to the presentation style that you cannot tell that the songs are dreadfully leaden and un-hooky, laking in sheer libinal impact, mauruzios production somehow still born and tedious? played out, wack, underachieving, past its peak, over the hill. top 5 album of the year? ? ? ?

what dreadful music must you have been spedning time with for this to be amongst favorite this year? philistines. I spit you!

bakhtin, Thursday, 13 November 2003 07:23 (twenty-two years ago)

the luomo hate is so played out at this point -- haven't there been like 5 threads on this exact subject already? with the amount of anti-luomo ire from you hataz, you'd think he conquered the billboard hot 100 or something. he doesn't sell a lot of records. he hasn't gotten nearly the press of, say, the rapture or the strokes or something. and the amount of people who seriously drool over him on ilx is probably under a dozen.

i stand by my initial position on this matter: vladislav delay is ULTRACUTE

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 13 November 2003 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"Talk In Danger" is one of my favorite songs of the year.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 November 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Even on ILX, who *really* loves this album apart from Matos and myself? There's someone else I'm forgetting. But even Reynolds is dismissive!

Speaking of whom, his recent repeated mention of Kodwo Eshun's talk of "the kindness of Omni Trio" makes me think that a similar phrase could be formulated for Luomo, something which establishes the responsive feeling his stuff incites in appreciative listeners ("the seductiveness of Luomo"?). Maybe more than Vocalcity, the value of The Present Lover cannot easily be located in the music itself, but necessarily only exists in a relationship with the person listening. This is true of all music obv. but my own experience with this album makes such a framework for examination seem more U&K. This explanation will not make sense and yet it feels right: it's like when I listen to the album it makes me imagine and desire a type of music in my head which then seems to co-incide with what I'm hearing, whether the music and the fantasy actually are identical or not. Like when you've got a friend who is totally in love with someone who you know fairly well and who seems quite average, and you wonder "what does she see in him (or he in her)?" - they see the same person and yet at the same time someone totally different.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 13 November 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, the idea that this album can only be enjoyed as a relationship between the album and the listener makes the pseudonym of "Bakhtin" faintly ironic.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 13 November 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

If I did drugs, I'd buy a mountain of blow and listen to 'Talk in Danger' on repeat. Pardon my tunnel vision on this, but you're right, I'm not so into the rest of the album as a whole.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 November 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't make me pull a Ned, Tim.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 13 November 2003 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I can see exactly why some people would listen to the album and think it flat. It's one of those records (actually, like microhouse period) that requires you give it the benefit of the doubt. But if you do, it's incredibly sexy and seductive. And fwiw, most people who've never heard of him, if you play them "body speaking" or "tessio" instantly love it. From a crit-wank perspective, sure, it's nothing "new", but who cares about that anyway?

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 13 November 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the thing that let this album down from what i was expecting coming on the heels of the present lover track off digital disco was the mix

hearing present lover compared side by side the mix on digital disco seems more open and the sounds bounce off each other in this large seemingly empty space while on the album the whole thing feels as if it is just behind a layer of frosted glass.

Still i do love "body speaking" and i like the remix of tessio as well it just doesnt reach the hights of breathlessness I was hoping for.

hector (hector), Thursday, 13 November 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

pre tell Bahktin: what beautiful music have you been spending time with for this to be amongst the most dreadful records of this year? Context, brother, context.

mohair (jon kapper), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the luomo hate is so played out at this point -- haven't there been like 5 threads on this exact subject already?

Have there???

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

you have posted to all of them.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 November 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha it's funny because it's not true!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Even on ILX, who *really* loves this album apart from Matos and myself? There's someone else I'm forgetting. But even Reynolds is dismissive!

it's me! i love it in a slightly different way, in that i don't think it's that dancefloor, but i still adore it...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 13 November 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't make me pull a Ned, Tim.

I can only laugh and shake my head ruefully. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 November 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Even on ILX, who *really* loves this album apart from Matos and myself?

Me of course. My favourite album of 2003. By far. (also notice that I don't feel like returning to Vocalcity, which is strange because I always thought Delay was on crack when he dismissed that album). Ah well.

Omar (Omar), Thursday, 13 November 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i think me too now

athos magnani (Cozen), Thursday, 13 November 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned: what does "pull a Ned" mean?

Tim: see Protgaorus circa "man is the measure of all things"

bakhtin, Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Mystic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like it! but what do i know? i'm usually 10 years late when it comes to dance music sub-genres. i just wait for people to get bored with whatever is hep and then buy 12 inches in the dollar bins. i may be slow but i get there eventually. in fact, thanks to the corruption of ilm i even bought a Kompakt comp that i found in the used bin for 6.99. and i love it! it's really good. so there ya go. i don't know what year it's from it doesn't have a date. wait, lemme go find it.
it's called Speicher CD1(Kompakt extra cd 1) it's really groovy. with or without pot. who is T.Raumschmiere? he or it is the coolest.

scott seward, Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, usually i am v slow onto 'dance music sub-genres' but I downloaded 3 of those kompakt comps off soulseek and i really like 'em.

will try and download lots more once I've gone through all those jazz, concrete, classical recs etc etc.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 13 November 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm still working my way thru the origins of miami bass.i should get to drum 'n' bass by the time i'm 60.

scott seward, Thursday, 13 November 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah all these smart ppl keeping up with all this stuff...I'm still trying to figure out 1958!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 13 November 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 14 November 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the phrase luomo sapiens though.

athos magnani (Cozen), Friday, 14 November 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, it's good

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 14 November 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"Tim: see Protgaorus circa "man is the measure of all things""

Yeah but I thought I acknowledged that with the large (even for me) number of caveats I attached to my argument.

I find the Maurizio comparison a bit odd - not really sure how it applies to The Present Lover (or Vocalcity for that matter). If all this stuff really is so yawn-inducing in a seen-it-all-before fashion, surely there are closer sources for Delay's alleged plagiarism and derivatiness?

"it's called Speicher CD1(Kompakt extra cd 1) it's really groovy. with or without pot. who is T.Raumschmiere? he or it is the coolest. "

Scott most Kompakt fans on ILX don't like Speicher as much as the other recent comps - Michael Mayer's "Immer", Triple R's "Friends", Tobias Thomas's "Smallville", "Schaffelfieber 2", and the series of "Total" comps. I'm not sure if this bodes well or ill for your blossomming Kompakt love.

T. Raumschmiere has his own label Shitkatapult, which makes really wonky abrasive distorted techno, but he's also a big fan of shuffletech (bouncy, glam-stomp stuff like "Unter Null" on Spiecher). He's just released an album (with a big single "Monstertruckdriver") which apparently takes that pounding glam-stomp techno sound to its logical conclusion - by adding more glam presumably. I've yet to hear it but I think Nabisco is a big fan.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 14 November 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, well shitkatapult has to be the coolest label name i could imagine so i will look for that stuff. and "glam-stomp techno" sounds like it would be right up my alley!

scott seward, Friday, 14 November 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and thanks Tim!

scott seward, Friday, 14 November 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The T Raumschmiere album is absolutely fantastic. Buy it! It even has a track that uses miss kittin in an interesting way!

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 14 November 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

First time hearing "Monstertruckdriver": "my god this is awful"
Second time hearing "Monstertruckdriver", several weeks later: "MORE MORE GIMME MORE"

I have no explanation for this bizarre turnaround.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 14 November 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"Monstertruckdriver" is a glorious, glorious thing, but the album hasn't clicked with me yet. I was expecting something more minimal, and I find it way too IDM

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 14 November 2003 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll just fall in to say I really like the Luomo album.

ddrake, Friday, 14 November 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim - Maurizio collaborated on and mastered the album - that close enough? hence the higher than average expectations - so i'm not saying its derivative just a diminishment -

i guess its just not the progression i would have imagined when the lush immersive dubby minimal 4/4 tracks style first emerged ten years ago - maybe maurizio's "remodel" of infiniti - think quick would be a good benchmark?

then again, as with most narcotics, the first taste is the sweetest, so my ears are probably jaded, relatively. not sure why i was compelled to be antagoinistic about this.

maurizio /mark ernestus burial mix stuff's plods along quite pleasingly. two comps came out this year 'With The Artists" &
"The Versions"

can anybody recommend any other maurizio productions in the last couple of years?

bakhtin, Friday, 14 November 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

nate - maybe you would like the schaffelfieber mix - similar punky shuffle tiiiime thing Raumschmiere does - you know it?

bakhtin, Friday, 14 November 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)
