Careless Talk is Dead, Long Live Loose Lips Sink Ships

I figured Stevie Chick would post something here eventually but I'll spare him the trouble:

After over two years of giving fans of great music, great writing, great design
and great photography a viable alternative to the ailing and soul-less monotony
of the mainstream music press, and inspiring a passionate movement of followers
in its wake, Careless Talk Costs Lives has, as founders Steve Gullick and
Everett True promised, folded with its twelfth and final issue.

Shed no tears for us, however. We will not go genly into that good night;
Everett True is currently working on his own monthly project, Plan B, whilst
Steve Gullick and Careless Talk Costs Lives features editor Stevie Chick have
founded their own quarterly magazine, Loose Lips Sink Ships. The magazines will
work in tandem with each other; we have, like the Wu Tang Clan, divided to
conquer.

Loose Lips Sink Ships will cover great music wherever we find it, as well as
art, film, literature (in fact, what ever gets our goat), all with the respect
and passion and skill it deserves. Each issue will throb with the fierce,
intellligent, hilarious and moving writing and genius photography and art you've
come to expect from Careless Talk Costs Lives. No, fuck that. We're going to top
everything we already achieved, a little further, with every subsequent issue.
Our title carries on CTCL's spirit - this is not a time for empty blether; its
five to midnight, and its time we made every word count.

Loose Lips Sink Ships hits the shelves at a time when the music press is in an
even worse state than it was two years ago, the racks heaving with
faux-independent, fake-revolutionary rags that add nothing new to the discourse,
that fail to stir even the slightest electricity in readers so thoroughly jaded
by publishers' lack of imagination. The very same readers who discovered
Careless Talk Costs Lives and have remained so passionately loyal to it ever
since; the kind of readers who devour music and art and culture with the very
same hunger and discernment as our writers. The kind of readers ill-served by a
press that feeds flimsy tat about fake rock'n'roll stars to a market that craves
something a whole lot more exciting, soulful and nutritious. Music lovers, not mere consumers, the kind of people who trawl record stores for hours at a time,
who can be found near the stage whenever something special is happening. People
like us.

Loose Lips Sink Ships sets sail February 14th, 2004. Get with it.

Editorial: Steve Gullick (steve@deathto.tv) Stevie Chick

Look forward to it, but I think they should have gone with 'Loose Bowels Soil Towels' instead. ;o)

REVIVE! [tho i might regret this]

stevie (stevie), Friday, 27 February 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a spiffing issue and that brilliant and glorious Bardo Pond article is a sign of genius. Hire that man.

(More seriously, Cathi Unsworth's article in particular has made me a very happy guy. Hurrah!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 February 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

did you get your copy then, ned? thank gawd! faith in postal service reaffirmed!

stevie (stevie), Friday, 27 February 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, it arrived earlier this week -- which considering the months it sometimes took for CTCL to arrive made for a very pleasant surprise!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 February 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Anywhere to buy it online, Stevie?

Ramon D, Friday, 27 February 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

www.deathto.tv should have the info!

stevie (stevie), Friday, 27 February 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Out of stock apparently.

Ramon d, Friday, 27 February 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't mind having a look at this, Stevie.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't suppose anyone in the US is picking it up?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i think we're primarily a UK organisation at the moment. you can find us in hmv, virgin (oxford street had a couple left yesterday) and all good independent record stores, etc etc etc. it *has* sold extremely fast, the people at beggars said its been flying off their shelves, and Cargo told us they're trying to restock already.

stevie (stevie), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"It's a spiffing issue and that brilliant and glorious Bardo Pond article is a sign of genius. Hire that man."

Take out the self-mockery and Ned otm. Seriously, really, really liked that piece - it lacked any kind of snide cynicism and was somehow refreshingly honest and open, while getting in some nice ideas and lovely prose ('rapture versus response'; 'like the noise can't get enough of itself' etc etc). Great stuff Ned.

Also liked PW Long's article a lot.

Not finished the mag yet - I like to take it slow. There were a few pieces that grated a little, too much of the snideness that Ned's piece lacked, a touch too 'everyone else is a twat, you're fucking stupid, the world sucks and I'm a genius' elitism.

Not a fan of that. Not at all.

But generally a great mag.

Plus someone should also make the point that Gullick's photography makes it impossible to look at any other photos in any other magazine. Fuck, they're beautiful. How is the guy so talented, so much better than everyone else? His photos make the bands look like ordinary people caught up in history, which ends up making them superhuman.

amen, Jim. [mail me offboard if you wanna, on more specific feedback on LLSS - I want to know your opinion...]

Gosh, thanks. :-) Much appreciated.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant it (about Ned + Gullick)...

Will mail you now Stevie.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Friday, 27 February 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

not sure if anyone's interested in my opinion (you all seem to know each other...) but anyway:

i received my ordered copy 2 days ago and, like jim, i'm taking it in slowly, mags tend to digest better that way. :)
first thoughts when i opened it
-smells good
-great small size
-*gasp*that cover picture...

leafing through:
-beautifully "designed" (lettering/black-white & white-black)
-*gasp*those pictures (that photo of the kaito show rules!)

first article i read (old favorite)
-sebadoh.
excellent piece. that's the way i like musicwriting to be. well written by someone who obviously loves what he's writing about, dry but concerned and personal.

in short: i love it. keep going, i'll keep reading (& looking!)

willem (willem), Friday, 27 February 2004 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it in much the same way that I loved CTCL - I hardly read any of it at first (mostly because I haven't heard of many of the bands covered) then I gradually take it all in over a period of time. I like the way it feels like a cross between a magazine and a book, or maybe a portfolio. It is also one of the prettiest things I own!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 27 February 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The smell is the thing I like least about it.

It's beautiful beautiful, lovely just to look at - I haven't read all the way through yet, but there's a lot of articles I like, even if some of them seem almost cut off, stopped short (which might just be because there's no indicator of an article-end other than the end of a page).

I really liked your piece on Tori Amos, Lex: it's charming and thoughtful, and your perspective on fandom - that after a while you can lose the (for lack of a better word) 'dependence'on it, that it can die down but stay banked and burning nonetheless - really appeals to me.

cis (cis), Saturday, 28 February 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the Lex that Lex? Hey, neat. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 February 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks cis :) Much appreciated.

I don't want this thread to turn into endless rounds of back-slappery, but I got round to Ned's piece last night after reading this and I love it too, for much the same reasons as Jim. I like Gracelette's writing a lot, too.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 28 February 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

sensationally, LLSS is readily purchasable in a SHOP here in Dublin.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Read more now - Gracelette's Blake thing was cool, plus the Madlib article by Mr Loose Lips himself. Liked the Sebadoh article as well - particularly the idea that they are a magic mixtape band. It was pretty touching considering I'm not really a fan.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 29 February 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
I'd just like to say that the official on line sales are on the Banchory web site.
http://www.banchoryshop.net/viewitem.asp?cat=LLSS01

Colin Browne, Wednesday, 17 March 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i really thought stevie was a female, he is somehow less interesting now

on a less screwed up note, LLSS first issue is great, a step up from CTCL i think

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

how did you glean from that banchory thing that stevie isn't a girl?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't even look at that. I was referring to what Ned posted up top

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I picked up this in HMV thee other week. I really enjoyed reading it - plenty to read, all interesting, the sign of the best music pubs, even articles on stuff you don't like is worth reading, like I'm not a sebadoh fan at all, but that piece was damn excellent. I'm waiting for the next one...

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

glad you liked it (and were able to find it!) norman... the second one is gonna be even better (ned i will be emailing you re: this very very soon, you too Lex)

stevie (stevie), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

so is everett not involved in this one?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got it since last Thursday, I was surprised I could find it here in Portugal (the only CTCL number I have seen - and bought - was in Exeter...). It's very beautiful indeed; it almost seems like the backwards numbering of CTCL was a kind of countdown to this one... I'm still on the Everett True record reviews, but liked everything I read until now. The Mozland article is INSANE! Also enjoyed finding Les Baton Rouge among Everett's reviews, always nice to see Portuguese underground bands on such a highly estimated magazine. Good work, lads, keep it going. ;)

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this still available anywhere? It is sold out on the Banchory web site.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

pretty much all gone now - some copies still on the shelves in some HMVs, etc, but we don't have any left, and neither does the distributor, and Banchory sold out very early indeed...

ET writes for us, but is putting his energies into his own magazine, Plan B...

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss the Dirty Vicar.

the bluefox, Tuesday, 23 March 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Pah. That'll be why I couldn't find a copy last Friday afternoon...

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

what can i say? you snooze, you lose... ;)

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

ET writes for us, but is putting his energies into his own magazine, Plan B...

David M hasn't contacted me about that yet! Is it finally fully up and running?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't know, but i think that's coming... x

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...

Stewart G Fletcher, Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ulrich Schnuass, Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Sunburnt Hand of the *Band*, eh? You might want to change that before it goes to print. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

doh, was c'n'pasting from email i sent to our distributor, who also distributes Sunburned Hand Of The Man, so hopefully he'll catch the mistake!

rest assured, given how closely we were poring over at at 3am August 4th, there should be less typos than ever in this issue!

i am not a nugget (stevie), Thursday, 26 January 2006 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, I misread "Shimmy Rivers" as Shimura Curves and was all "WHAT?!?!? I didn't know about that..." ;-)

The Late Fear And The Potato Fear (kate), Thursday, 26 January 2006 13:37 (twenty years ago)

guerilla gigging:the next generation. don't even tell the band they're playing...

also, in case this isn't clear from the site, those Black Mountain and Scout spreads are just the opening two pages from six-page pieces.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Thursday, 26 January 2006 13:39 (twenty years ago)

thats odd for i, one of said rivers was reading about Shimura curves but an hour ago, and i cant even remember the point of Pythagoras. a name change is not at hand.
