After over two years of giving fans of great music, great writing, great design and great photography a viable alternative to the ailing and soul-less monotony of the mainstream music press, and inspiring a passionate movement of followers in its wake, Careless Talk Costs Lives has, as founders Steve Gullick and Everett True promised, folded with its twelfth and final issue. Shed no tears for us, however. We will not go genly into that good night; Everett True is currently working on his own monthly project, Plan B, whilst Steve Gullick and Careless Talk Costs Lives features editor Stevie Chick have founded their own quarterly magazine, Loose Lips Sink Ships. The magazines will work in tandem with each other; we have, like the Wu Tang Clan, divided to conquer. Loose Lips Sink Ships will cover great music wherever we find it, as well as art, film, literature (in fact, what ever gets our goat), all with the respect and passion and skill it deserves. Each issue will throb with the fierce, intellligent, hilarious and moving writing and genius photography and art you've come to expect from Careless Talk Costs Lives. No, fuck that. We're going to top everything we already achieved, a little further, with every subsequent issue. Our title carries on CTCL's spirit - this is not a time for empty blether; its five to midnight, and its time we made every word count. Loose Lips Sink Ships hits the shelves at a time when the music press is in an even worse state than it was two years ago, the racks heaving with faux-independent, fake-revolutionary rags that add nothing new to the discourse, that fail to stir even the slightest electricity in readers so thoroughly jaded by publishers' lack of imagination. The very same readers who discovered Careless Talk Costs Lives and have remained so passionately loyal to it ever since; the kind of readers who devour music and art and culture with the very same hunger and discernment as our writers. The kind of readers ill-served by a press that feeds flimsy tat about fake rock'n'roll stars to a market that craves something a whole lot more exciting, soulful and nutritious. Music lovers, not mere consumers, the kind of people who trawl record stores for hours at a time, who can be found near the stage whenever something special is happening. People like us. Loose Lips Sink Ships sets sail February 14th, 2004. Get with it.

Take out the self-mockery and Ned otm. Seriously, really, really liked that piece - it lacked any kind of snide cynicism and was somehow refreshingly honest and open, while getting in some nice ideas and lovely prose ('rapture versus response'; 'like the noise can't get enough of itself' etc etc). Great stuff Ned.
Also liked PW Long's article a lot.
Not finished the mag yet - I like to take it slow. There were a few pieces that grated a little, too much of the snideness that Ned's piece lacked, a touch too 'everyone else is a twat, you're fucking stupid, the world sucks and I'm a genius' elitism.
Not a fan of that. Not at all.
But generally a great mag.
Plus someone should also make the point that Gullick's photography makes it impossible to look at any other photos in any other magazine. Fuck, they're beautiful. How is the guy so talented, so much better than everyone else? His photos make the bands look like ordinary people caught up in history, which ends up making them superhuman.

i received my ordered copy 2 days ago and, like jim, i'm taking it in slowly, mags tend to digest better that way. :)first thoughts when i opened it-smells good-great small size-*gasp*that cover picture...
leafing through:-beautifully "designed" (lettering/black-white & white-black)-*gasp*those pictures (that photo of the kaito show rules!)
first article i read (old favorite)-sebadoh.excellent piece. that's the way i like musicwriting to be. well written by someone who obviously loves what he's writing about, dry but concerned and personal.
in short: i love it. keep going, i'll keep reading (& looking!)

It's beautiful beautiful, lovely just to look at - I haven't read all the way through yet, but there's a lot of articles I like, even if some of them seem almost cut off, stopped short (which might just be because there's no indicator of an article-end other than the end of a page).
I really liked your piece on Tori Amos, Lex: it's charming and thoughtful, and your perspective on fandom - that after a while you can lose the (for lack of a better word) 'dependence'on it, that it can die down but stay banked and burning nonetheless - really appeals to me.

I don't want this thread to turn into endless rounds of back-slappery, but I got round to Ned's piece last night after reading this and I love it too, for much the same reasons as Jim. I like Gracelette's writing a lot, too.
