is it allowed to call them hiphop?
or just tosh? \ (i still think they are cool)
i read an article with one of the ones out of de la soul whoi said they were one of the best hip hop acts in the mid 90's........
or are they totalling undeserving of credibility?
my favourite:
"u" on the "3 months...." album
what about the religion aspect?
do they deserve respect for being the boly half decent christian outfit, whose religion was a primary aspect of the music?
(there is a LOT of christian rock style stuff which is huge, even if mainly unheard of to a mainstream audience, even in england...the soul survivior events, like a christian reading festival get in about 30000 people, mostly kids.....)
to digress, what about religion in music? is it all a dud?

Aside from A Love Supreme, I'd say so.

In terms of what I actually get from their music, I can't (Arrested Development, from what I heard = terribly limp quasi-folksiness / Outkast = awesome rhyming, incredible ideas and layers of sound). And I find it hard to imagine Outkast teaming up with about 20 mostly old people from some farm as I recall AD doing.

I'll have to agree w/ Mr. Perry on the "Tennessee" tip, at the very least - that line about seeing the trees where his forefathers hung from is frightening in the best possible way. Of course, that song barely gets any play nowadays. And I don't think it's aged all that well.
Religion in music often leads to didactic preaching, which is intolerable and often boring. Religion informing one's music (like Low, for instance) often leads to interesting things. Also, some artists hide behind all the God rhetoric while bla-bla-blahing about some unGod-like stuff. Missy Elliot's shout-outs to Him on her last two records come to mind, for instance. (Simon Reynolds hit on this point in a more descriptive fashion in last month's Uncut.)

"terribly limp quasi-folksiness" said someone. but to me in my ignorance, i've not heard any other hiphop act like it.
theres tons right? i just found the sound pretty different and just.....fuck i dunno. maybe this was a stupid thread.
im coming round to outkast now too. maybe this says something.
in fact outkast was probably the best thing i heard played in russia. apart from the ed case mix of gorillaz. can you believe that got played on russian radio???????

But gotta give Fox grudging credit for keeping a spectacularly unpopular show on the air for 50-some great episodes. or roughly 1/3 the number of crap Simpsons episodes. And at least there's DVDs. (My birthday's approaching!)

I'm rewatching this show for.... I don't know... the 5th time? 6th? It's so insanely classic, I keep LOLling in every episode. Even when one comes on and the A-plot is something I'm not exactly excited about there are so many little moments. There's one where they just start throwing in cheeky Burger King endorsements out of nowhere (David Cross's delivery is brilliant as usual) and later in the episode Henry Winkler starts doing the same and then he literally jumps over a shark. Just like he did when he was the Fonz, coining the term. I had never caught that before because there are constantly a half dozen jokes going on at once in this show.

i still can't believe the rap group sued the TV show for using the name and got a cash settlement. like you fucking invented the phrase "arrested development," Speech? c'mon.

Can someone give me the name of the woman in the band who says "Boo!" in the "People Everyday" video?

Lived it up like it was 1992 at Lincoln Center this weekend: I saw a beautiful 35mm print of Unforgiven on Saturday night, then caught Arrested Development at Damrosch Park Sunday night, which apparently is scheduled for a major rehabilitation after this summer (i.e. they'll be moving their summer shows to a different location for a while).
I think Speech might be the only original member remaining, but the current group is rock solid - they put on an excellent 50-minute set focused on their debut. Played the CD of their debut a few times since then, thought about replacing my copy since it was scratched up, and to my surprise, there's actually two versions: the one I have has an extra 16th track that's the single version of "People Everyday" (aka the Metamorphosis Mix). Apparently a lot of copies don't have this, which is a shame. I don't think either version is rare, they both can be had for peanuts.
― birdistheword, Tuesday, 29 July 2025 18:59 (four days ago)
The difference between the two versions is jarring--like comparing a rough studio "Like a Rolling Stone" outtake to the real thing.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 29 July 2025 19:01 (four days ago)
FWIW it's also an unlisted hidden track - the ONLY place that indicates it is the disc label, i.e. if you have the version with "People Everyday (Metamorphosis Mix)," it'll be listed on the disc label and nowhere else.
― birdistheword, Tuesday, 29 July 2025 19:05 (four days ago)
By the way, I did, months later, get an answer to the question I posed right above bird's post (from the band's FB account!--i.e., from whoever looks after that): Aerle Taree.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 29 July 2025 19:08 (four days ago)
She's actually on IG - has a few posts on Arrested Development (even references the TV show):
