The sappiest song you've ever loved... (and why)

Ronny Milsap - "Cowboys and Clowns"
Nothing more sad that a lonesome cowboy left behind. Except a lonesome rodeo clown left behind.

Chris DeBurgh - "Lady in Red"
I'm a sucker for New Wave shmaltz, and DeBurgh's vocal is so bad that its fun to imitate. And if yer drunk and doing the song at the Karaoke stage, it seem to suddenly have 'meaning'. (I doesn't. I'm just saying that is 'seeeems' to under those circumstances.)

Sixpence None The Richer - "Kiss Me"
A store that I worked at had this and "There She Goes" on regular rotation. Too many overnight shifts with no one made me love it. And it's kind of pretty anyway.

Yo La Tengo - "Last Days of Disco"
Because Kim Gordon/Thurston Moore couldn't pull this off.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I sometimes fear that "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey might secretly be my favorite song of all time.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Stay" by Shakespeare's Sister....just because it came out right when I'd been dumped, and fit the bill nicely.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"Maybe I'm Amazed"

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

And why... cause I like it when Paul screams. It's not quite soulful, not like John's screams, but it's adorable all the same.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of sappy songs I still love or sappy songs I once loved? I did have a "love songs" phase during the late 80s or something.. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

'Zoom' by Fat Larry's Band. I guess I was 10 or 11 when it came out, and I thought that by listening to this song over and over again, I could cling on to my childhood for ever. The Boo Radleys' version is lovely, too.

Is the song actually about drugs?

Rick Spence (spencerman), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

At 11, I was heavily into "Heart" by Leo Sayer.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Creep" by Radiohead. For the guitars. And okay, his voice.

chuck, Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Second place: something by Nirvana, maybe.

chuck, Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"stay" by lisa loeb
just can't help it, she's too cute.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

mine's probably "You Are My Lady" by Freddie Jackson. Mainly for the bridge part where the whole thing lifts up on the lyric "our love will shine". That's nice.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Blind Man in the Bleachers" loved for all the wrong reasons probably..

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I like "Is This Love" by Whitesnake for nostalgia purposes. And that "Angel Eyes" tune by Steelheart.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Love Her, She Loves Me" - NRBQ

The first time I saw the Q, they played this incredibly corny love song, complete with a toy piano solo. There are actually tons of sappy Q songs that I love.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 13 November 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

What timing!!!

I watched the video to that 'everything i do (i do it for you)' (i think that's what is in the brackets right?) and there's that bit where the guitar solo is played by this guy with this awfully long hair and that changed from something i hated it bcz it was at no1 for ever here to something that i could begin to (oh yes) love.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 13 November 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

chuck eddy in liking radiohead shockah!

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 13 November 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

''"Creep" by Radiohead. For the guitars. And okay, his voice.''

traitor!

"Second place: something by Nirvana, maybe"

Uhh, "Sappy" maybe? I know, too easy.

He War by Cat Power

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 14 November 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

seal (either waterfall or violet) came to mind first, but i totally love the last song on the fire theft album, which has very embarrasing lyrics to be singing out loud!

ron (ron), Friday, 14 November 2003 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

oh uh, the seal songs are so pretty, in particular the chord progressions of violet. i don't know exactly why 'sinatra' sounds so good to me... i respect that they have the nuts to make such ambitious songs, anthemic, etc. plus shouts out to puget sound!

ron (ron), Friday, 14 November 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife dearly loves "Our House" by CSNY (as in "....is a very, very, very nice house!")...and I want to share her bliss....but I cannot, as it is just so shamelessly sappy and twee and it makes me want to gargle with nitro glicerin.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always found the way they sing the line "Life used to be so hard" in that song very touching somehow.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 14 November 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Smashing Pumpkins - "Blew Away." James Iha pwns all in sappiness.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 14 November 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Don't Stop Believin'" is good too.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 14 November 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Foreigner - "Waiting for a Girl Like You"

It is a middle school/skating ring kind of thing.

earlnash, Friday, 14 November 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Time After Time

oops (Oops), Friday, 14 November 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i love "Save The Best For Last" by Vanessa Williams. Why? i dunno. it makes me want to cry.

scott seward, Friday, 14 November 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i also feel funny when singing along to 'you freed yourself' by dusty trails

ron (ron), Friday, 14 November 2003 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i love "Save The Best For Last" by Vanessa Williams

"Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon..."

"I Want To Know What Love Is" - the way it triumphs over its inherent cheesiness is nothing short of heroic.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 14 November 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

my own: "Take Your Breath Away"

Vic (Vic), Friday, 14 November 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

'Morning Side of the Mountain' by Donny & Marie Osmond.Great big production number, wonderful vocals.

Paul R (paul R), Friday, 14 November 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Golden Slumbers and I really don't know why. It's just that Jr. High School everybody is gonna die in a car wreck or huffing gas kind of thing.
It's a cold winter morning and your girlfriend comes over and climbs into bed with you after your parents leave for work, and you don't have to go to school 'cause Tommy Blackwelder smashed his mom's station wagon head on into a 18 wheeler while sniffing airplane glue and listening to Masters of Reality. The funeral is at two and you've kind of out-grown your good suit but so has everyone else and no one will be looking at you anyway 'cause they'll be checking out the Batey Twins in their matching skirts, and even though your girlfriend is hot, the Twins are UNBELIEVABLY hot and the entire 8th grade wants to kiss them and ain't Death Cool?

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Friday, 14 November 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Sade's "Kiss of Life", which conjures in me the same type of sensation as NO's Temptation, ie. visions of driving off blissfully to nowhere

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Friday, 14 November 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll Be There For you by bon jovi

Jarek B., Monday, 5 September 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

I Wanna Be With You - Mandy Moore. Her voice sounds pretty and breathy and oh-so-earnest. So giddy and cute and in-love and awesome. Plus a string section. Plus, when the instruments finally cut out, it all comes to a close with that amazing, whispered "...I wanna be with you."

babyalive (babyalive), Monday, 5 September 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

this thread should have been locked after "dont stop believin" was mentioned

smalltownboy, Monday, 5 September 2005 04:14 (twenty years ago)

"Seasons In The Sun"!
They don't come any sappier than that. (No sap like Canadian sap 'cause that's where all the maple trees are.)
