George Clinton - What the Hell is he on about?

I mean: He is constantly singing of "The Funk". Has he ever found it? Or what is it? Or, anyway, wouldn't it be possible to find some other topic to sing about?

Oh for the love of Pete.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

the electric spanking of war pigs?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

geir, you would probably like the first parliament album.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I like a lot of his stuff, really (and I am generally more into music than lyrics). But the lyrics are quite meaningless nevertheless :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, and that dunderhead James Brown is always saying "Good God." I mean, what is with him?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

which Pete?

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete Cosey.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

No, the funk was smote in "Agony of DeFeet." Sad really.

two months pass...
Whats the best Clinton affiliated album to start with?

Oh God, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

do you prefer disco or acid rock?

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

You chose this thread to revive on purpose, admit it!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The more 'funkier' stuff , not hard rock.

Oh God, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the missing connection b/w geir's liking of george clinton and his musical theory = FRANK ZAPPA.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It was the 1st thread of interest after I did a search on George Clinton that is all. Better than reviving the crack cocaine one.

Oh God, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the great tryptic of Clinton's hard funk shit is Parliament's "Chocolate City", "Mothership Connection", and "Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome". Although I have a hard time choosing between "Funkentelechy" and its follow-up, "Motorbooty Affair". Get any of the recent reissues, you can't go wrong.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

start with mothership connection

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Mothership Connection sounds good. Only song i've heard is 'Flashlight' what album is that on?

Oh God, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Problem is I tend to think of the rockier stuff as actually being 'funkier' than the latter 70s P-Funk records (I never really thought of disco as being "funky"). I think a good sampling of their sound can be heard on records like Mothership Connection, Hardcore Jollies and Maggot Brain.

"Flash Light" is on Funkentelechy.

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Flashlight" is the last song on "Funkentelechy". "Mothership Connection" is probably their most widely-acknowledged masterpiece though. It was also something of a landmark, being one of the first r&b record that's back to back funk, with not a ballad in sight. (I find some of Parliament's ballads pretty entertaining, but they do tend to be the most skippable tracks on their albums. Thankfully there's never more than one).

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

shakey you forgot clones of dr funkenstein which is part of the trilogy not chocolate city and which maybe has the best tunes of any of those albums.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I rode the virtual funk ride at the EMP in 2000. Is it still running? Is it still funky?

The George Clinton & P-Funk gig for free at the Smithsonian Folklife Fest near the Washington Monument was awesome last night.

Me'shell was terrific too

do dat do dat do do dat dat dat (thewufs), Thursday, 28 June 2012 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

Eh, I thought she was just ok. Some songs dragged on too long. She is often too mellow for me but without a striking enough melody to sustain my attention.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 28 June 2012 17:24 (thirteen years ago)

But she was definately better than the other opener, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk-- too hippie jamband for me.
