I have "Happy End" by Happy End (above) and love it. Any suggestions / warnings about their other works? Very similar artists?

Konishi once told me that Happy End was the beginning of Shibuya-kei, for him at least. So you might like early Pizzicato 5. You might also like Miharu Koshi.

I've also heard Cornelius being labeled Shibuya-kei and while I like him, I'm more interested in the folk angle Happy End has than Keigo's blips. Does early P5 reflect those soft characteristics of HE?

Have you heard Haruomi Hosono's solo work? I'd really recommend 'Monad Box', which is mostly early 80s commercial and film soundtrack and ethnic-synthetic-ambient stuff.

Early P5 was soft, melancholic bossa, not the dance stuff they later developed.

I know nothing of Haruomi Hosono's solo work. Thanks, I'll have to check that out.

I'd also be interested in a Happy End website in *english* or a distributor that beats Amazon's prices ($25 a CD) if anyone knows of one.

oh come on. no one knows where to get these cheaper than amazon?

I got the reissue of P5's 1989 record, By Her Majesty's Request, last week. It's good. Otherwise, I have nothing to add.

four years pass...

^^ i don't think that's actually their discography. those aren't the band members.

i didn't realize until today that this was Haruomi Hosono's band before YMO. i'm totally in love with the first s/t album from 70. it's great funky psych folk. great drums and bass. some parts kinda remind me of Fleetwood Mac or the Byrds.

dean, did you ever get any more by them? or solo Hosono?
