Oh! Sweet Nuthin'

Does the title refer to the woman herself? Sweet Nuthin' has nothing at all. I don't much care, actually.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 November 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the worst song on the album.

Jonathan Z., Friday, 14 November 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't help being rigorously vigilant about his sort of thing, though I'd mostly prefer to not care. Sadly that doesn't quite feel right.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 November 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That's prob the best answer J

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 November 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

are you talking about Baxter Dury?

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 14 November 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 November 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the "sweet nothing" bit is more a resigned exclamation. sweet f.a.! that's what i've got! nothin' at all!!

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 14 November 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah that's what I would've thought a few months ago, now everything seems tied up in politics

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 November 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The worst song on "Loaded" is still better than the best thing on 99.9999999999999999999% of other albums

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

There's worst things than Sweet Nuthin on that album. COwboy Bill for starters

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed, I don't think it's the worst song but it's a pity Lou didn't sing it

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Walking down life's highways hand in hand with myself? I know it's supposed to be a joke, but it's still fucking terrible! It's the worst song on the album, gimme cowboy Bill anytime

Jonathan Z., Friday, 14 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

don't understand the problem here.

oh, sweet nothing: you ain't got nothing at all.

so, it refers to nothingness, to not-having.

mig, Friday, 14 November 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh...isn't that bit about "life's highways" from "I Found A Reason?" (Maybe that's the only point you're trying to make, Jonathan?) In any case, "Oh Sweet Nuthin" is not only not the worst song on "Loaded," but one of the VU's best songs, period. Yes, Lou should've sung it, maybe, though I have a certain soft spot for Yule's dull sweetness...

M Specktor (M Specktor), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh fuck you're right and I'm wrong - it's I Found A Reason which is the worst song on the album! (Sweet Nuthin''s close behind though!)

Jonathan Z., Friday, 14 November 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I iike Little Dougie Yule too

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's time for Loaded backlash. For years it was considered to be their worst album, then came Loaded revisionism which has held sway for quite long enough. No, it's their poorest effort. It has some fucking great songs on it, but those are all done much better on Live '69

Jonathan Z., Friday, 14 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it's not perfect but as I said upthread, still better than 99.9999999999999999999% of all other albums

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno...I applaud the sentiment...it's certainly true that it's great songs are done better on Live '69 (although the exact same could be said of so many records, most not by the VU,) but hasn't there already been a 'Loaded' backlash, and didn't Lou begin it himself?

What about the Third record? (Which I also love.) It has "The Murder Mystery" on it. I'd rather listen to "I Found A Reason" on repeat-play, frankly...

M Specktor (M Specktor), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Murder Mystery" and "I Found A Reason" are both great!!!!!!!!!

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The Murder Mystery is better though...

Jonathan Z., Friday, 14 November 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Can anyone say Jesus" off the 3rd record? I could never get into that one.

And the intro singing on I Found a Reason is brilliant. Revisiting that 50's doo-wop style!
And Murder Mystery has my favorite Moe Tucker line "Enter the pig"

kar120c, Friday, 14 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh christ. The tracks on Loaded which are the best are all the ones with Morrison's guitar work -- sweet nothing totally included.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually think the all that end solo stuff on Oh Sweet Nuthin' was Yule. Doesn't sound like Sterling's style, too "jammy".

kar120c, Friday, 14 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's time for Loaded backlash.

It sounds like it's time for a Squeeze re-appraisal.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" - 'tis good. And Doug Yule's best vocal performance, period. Plus tasty S. Morrison guitar lead. This song's better than anything on 'Sticky Fingers'. Listen to how shit Reed's vocals are on 'Loaded'. In fact, listen to the caterwauling racket that is the "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" demo on that 'Fully Loaded' dealie. Lou sounds like a cat in heat. Thankfully he didn't sing on the "official" version. Only thing lacking on this track is Mo Tucker on drums.

Am I the only one who finds this song/performance (esp. Yule's vocal) proto-Big Star (say, 'Sister Lovers')? Alex Chilton could've/should've done this one, but, absence of Mo Tucker aside, I think the song is perfect as it is.

Kjoerup, Friday, 14 November 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the guitar solo at the end so much. (Is that true that it's Yule, not Morrison?!)

Sam J. (samjeff), Friday, 14 November 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

According to Yule, only Sterling and Lou played guitar on that album:

Sam J. (samjeff), Friday, 14 November 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh but wait further down it says:

Oh Sweet Nuthin'
Sterling - guitar (I believe)
Lou - guitar
Doug - guitar (solo), bass, lead vocal
Billy - drums

Huh. I'd be really interested to know.

Sam J. (samjeff), Friday, 14 November 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it does sound like Sterl tho there is no doubt that Yule does play quite a lot of guitar on this album
