bands that split up then got back together years later and put out an album that is both as good as their past work and a progression from it

Many, many bands have got back together to make a shit record or one that's basically the same as their previous efforts. Very few bands have reformed and released something good and interesting.

I submit the Go-Betweens. Their two comeback albums are not only pretty good but they've tried something different - a humbler, more stripped down sound.

New Order to thread, obviously

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Wire.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm nominating King Crimson, who even did it twice! (i like both the 80s and the 90s/00s material)

And an obvious one that I don't really agree with: Turbonegro.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Baaderist, you're not telling me Get Ready is a patch on their previous work are you?

Joanthan Z., Friday, 14 November 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Wire did it twice too.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

There aren't any

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Walker Brothers No Regrets = pretty damn good, although not really original

Joanthan Z., Friday, 14 November 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Television

BrianB, Friday, 14 November 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, I loved Television, but album no 3 was as bad as everyone said album no 2 was...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Neu! split up between Neu 2 and Neu 75 - but that was only for a year or so, so it wasn't some bunch of beer-bellied balding gits trying to keep up with their alimony payments

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Sunny Day Real Estate.

willem (willem), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I see not reason why they should necessarily develop stylistically, if the songs are good enough.

In the case of Aerosmith 87-93, they were.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Killing Joke
Jane's Addiction
Cheap Trick

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 14 November 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Bungle "broke up" after their self-titled debut and came back years later with the enormously different (and, in my opinion, AMAZINGER) Disco Volante and California. They are again broke up now, so I expect their best albums to come out 5-10 years from now.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Roxy Music to thread.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i realise they aint ILM cool or anything, but Madness. their return lp proper 'Wonderful' was exactly that. definitley matched their earlier stuff.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The Chameleons. I would say.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been *really* wary of taking the plunge with the reformed versions of both the Go-Betweens and especially the Chameleons. I loved these bands so much the first time round, and I have this absolute terror of having my heroes sounding, well uh, old and vaguely desperate. Which I guess is my problem really, but still, it feels like someone trying to revive the long-dead family dog...

NickB (NickB), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

In the Chams' case, I like the fact that it's a bit of a calmer group in general on Why Call It Anything but no less involved -- for my money the inclusion of "Dangerous Land" makes it worth the listening. The two acoustic/semi-acoustic albums they've done are wonderful too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, maybe I'll have to bite the bullet one day. That artwork's not pleasant though, is it?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Eh, Reg does what he wants...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

seconding the Chameleons, at least half the album anyways, mostly the first half.

sucka (sucka), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

here's a great one, Sisters of Mercy- Floodland. Some people think their first album is best but this one has 1000 times more staying power for me, especially because of the amazingly subtle layered synth sound. Although it's andrew solo so I don't know if it really should count.

sucka (sucka), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard the new buzzcocks in the record store last year and it sounded great.

j fail (cenotaph), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Brand Nubian.

The ONLY rap group to do this successfully.

ddrake, Friday, 14 November 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Van Der Graf Generator.

Beta (abeta), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I continue to be very dubious of the faculties of people who claim to like New Order but dislike _Get Ready_.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 14 November 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Steely Dan
Joe Jackson and band
Throwing Muses

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 15 November 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

David Bowie and Tony Visconti working together

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 15 November 2003 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Träd, Gräs, och Stenar

Jeremy (Jeremy), Saturday, 15 November 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

go betweens is the only answer to this question i'm comfortable with. throwing muses and wire qualify to a lesser degree.

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 15 November 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

did new order *really* split up?

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 15 November 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

There are many, and many of them listed here.
But first to my mind would be Jane's Addiction.

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Sunday, 16 November 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh, I loved Television, but album no 3 was as bad as everyone said album no 2 was...

You and your ears obviously work independent of each other.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 16 November 2003 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure if Game Theory ---> The Loud Family counts, since the band is really just Scott Miller + whoever, but they improved vastly between the last GT album and first LF album.

dlp9001, Sunday, 16 November 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Friends Of Rachel Worth more than any previous Go-Betweens album.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 November 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Wire, twice, I agree.

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

if i didn't like someone i would play the new wire for them.
