Flutes in pop

This instrument is to me what the oboe is to Vaughan. I can only think of one record I openly dislike which uses the flute heavily, and that's the absolutely indefensible: "Just For You" by M People.

So: the highs? Lows? Sublimities? Boredoms?

It all depends on how you feel about Jethro Tull."Autobahn" and "Ruckzuck" by Kraftwerk are some of my favourites.

Damian, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the flute on 'Wild Thing'.

Curt, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's no flute,that's an ocarina.

Damian, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In that case, I hate it. Why couldn't they have put a flute in there? Bastards.

Curt, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mercury Rev, my friends. All over that first album, for a start.

This is the part of ILM where I mention Belle and Sebastian again, most notably "Mary Jo," about the Nick Drakeiest moment in the band's catalog.

It's all about 'Ralf and Florian.' What an album... Also, Kraftwerk's first has a track on which Florian's flute is very prominently (and funkily) featured.

i recommend the great societys version of nature boy with two flutes totally out of tune but still somehow fantastic. there are also some great flute bits in nicos chelsea girl album sorryfor the lack of punctuation. can't be bothered... delia

i second the flute on 'Autobahn', listening i sometimes find it a shame they had to work exclusively in electronically generated sounds when they had those chiming guitars and great flutes.

matthew james, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

See, I would've said Jethro Tull if someone else hadn't, but now I'm just going to have to mention my band and our bloody flute player...

Or perhaps I should just mention the wonderful flute parts on Novak records? Mercury Rev, also, have some ace washing flutes.

Actually, going back to something everso slightly my band related, I believe that Billy Joel by Blood Sausage may have had flutes on it... Hmmm...

emil.y, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeh, Mercury Rev when they were good.

Jay-Z's Big Pimpin'? i read somewhere that timbaland stole that riff from an Egyptian record. anyone know anything about that?

gareth, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's Abdel Halim Hafez 'Khosara' on 'Big Pimpin'.

oh, and it's sampling, not 'stealing'... !

m jemmeson, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i wasn't sure if it had been sampled or recreated. but yes, it does seem strange that i said 'stole', really rather out of character for me

gareth, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sampling IS stealing. Not that that's bad, or anything, but that's what it is, unless it's cleared

dave q, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Track Goes By" by the High Llamas (the 10-minute one, Supertramp-as- Can, unrecognisable but equally GRATE live).

"Teenage Chase" by Keith Mansfield.

"The Hustle" by Van McCoy and the Soul City Symphony.

"Big Pimpin'", naturally.

Captain Swing aka King Penda, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

re: sampling vs stealing
why is sampling any different from more convential musicians quoting notes, lyrics, or arrangements from other peoples' work? (something normally critically accepted, and, even when blatantly obvious, rarely results in lawsuits/clearance payments)

m jemmeson, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
"Sledgehammer" is brilliant, as is "Fool On The Hill" and most of all "Supper's Ready". All of those contain flute.

Cat Power "He Turns Down" off the Moon Pix lp; great song w mucho flute. There are flutes aplenty on Nico's "Chelsea Girl"; that's a top record too.
