Which band has done the most damage to their reputation post-break up?

They were pretty good and even excellent back in the day, but the intervening years haven't been kind. Perhaps an ill-advised set of reunion shows with one or two scabs in for dead or embittered members. Maybe a tell-all book and a series of increasingly shrill interviews. Either way, you realize that yeah they made some great records but gawd they've managed to wreck all that with current antics.

The Doors own this thread

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Sex Pistols, Kiss

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd say the sex pistols, but they did enough damage to their reputation while they were still together! (xpost)

atomic horseradish (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The Smashing Pumpkins

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Oi! (Besides, they never broke up until they honest to god broke up!)

Jane's Addiction. JESUS FUCKING GOD. Eric A is the only one with brains and any dignity.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The Beatles

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

They didn't exactly break up but The Beach Boys own this thread.

rw, Friday, 14 November 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Misfits

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooooh, so true, Matt!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

And the Dead Kennedys

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Neither Soundgarden nor Rage are off to a particuarly good start.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Friday, 14 November 2003 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

GUNS'N'ROSES!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Arguably the Beach Boys did the most damage to their reputation by NOT breaking up...(which they have still yet to do officially)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, Jefferson Airplane

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Throbbing Gristle, but solely due to John Balance's usenet posts about killing kittens and Genesis' sheer laughability in general.

Xii (Xii), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not to say I don't like them. Or intended to be a negative comment about Chris Carter, who continues to churn out great records.

Xii (Xii), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

but john balance wasnt in TG, was he?

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The Jacksons (by this point in time)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

who here has stopped listening to, say, a beatles or sex pistols record after their so-called 'reputation' has been tarnished?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Everytime you mention a member of Coil or Throbbing Gristle on-line....

(ok seriously, what the fuck. John Balance has never been in Throbbing Gristle. What does his posts have to do with TG's reputation... did TG do to kittnes what Ozzy did to pigeons or something?)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I never really cared much for the Beatles to begin with, but I can't bear to listen to them now. But that's due to more of a combination of obsessive Beatles fans and just the sheer omnipresence of the Beatles.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

And sadly, I really have to put The Who high up on this list. OK, technically they haven't broken up, but for fuck's sake...

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

what abt the doors chris? do you listen to them now?

there might be one or two bands that did things that 'harmed' their so-called image i had of them but I do return to their records.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 14 November 2003 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. Nobody has mentioned The Police. I guess Sting has done a lot to damage their reputation due to his solo material throughout the 90s.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 14 November 2003 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Aerosmith ever techically break up in the late '70s/early '80s? I forget. If so, maybe them. (Though the Police REALLY come close.)

chuck, Saturday, 15 November 2003 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Genesis ever break up (per se'), Geir? (Wait, did they ever HAVE a reputation?)

chuck, Saturday, 15 November 2003 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Aerosmith ever techically break up in the late '70s/early '80s? I forget.

They switched members, obv., but I don't think they ever formally called it quits...

*checks*

According to their own site, no. Perry and Whitford met up with Tyler and the rest in early 1984 as the Rock and a Hard Place incarnation was finishing up a tour and two months later they were back in the band.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 November 2003 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Chuck, you don't like glossy sellout 80s-90s Aerosmith?

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh -- Stairway to Hell didn't make that clear? I think he had some good words for Done With Mirrors...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 November 2003 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ulp. Haven't read it in years. I'll just skulk back to the Dawson's Creek thread...

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU AWFUL MAN (I haven't read it all the way through in years either, I just remember the comment that after said album bombed they brought in outside help ie Desmond Child etc., 'and sucked and sold.')

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, I'm a asshole '70s purist when it comes to Aerosmith. I don't even like *Pump* and "Janie's Got a Gun" much; last rocking album they did was *Done With Mirrors,* I swear. I HATE "Love in the Elevator" and "Dude Looks Like a Lady", always have. All that half-assed horn section crap, yuck. (I DID like that one ballad they had a hit with about two years ago, though, I guess -- "Jaded," I think. And some of those videos with Alicia Silverstone were entertaining.)

A few others somebody though maybe not me should probably nominate:

the Beatles, the Velvet Underground, Big Black, Nirvana

chuck, Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

80s Aerosmith I can take or leave. But the big 90s stupid stuff like Cryin' I can't resist. And I love how those videos were always about "living dangerously" but always making sure you had an airbag or a bungee cord.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Genesis damaged their own reputation prior to their breakup, first and foremost. From the 80s onwards that is.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand how the Police or Nirvana have done damage to their reputations, could somebody explain?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Keith totally OTM re Aerosmith

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Nirvana certainly haven't, but Sting's adult contemporary albums during the 90s have certainly damaged his reputation, and as a result, also Police's

I mean, people forget that even his 80s solo albums were actually quite good.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If I were in Nirvana, I would have erased "You Know You're Right" a long time ago.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

But Ned, if you were in Nirvana, there's a very good chance (33%) you'd be dead.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, your chances might be better if you count the other drummers.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Would have been considerably worse if he had been in Led Zepplin or The Who, I would say...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Sting's solo albums actually make Police albums sound better.

My answer: R.E.M. Remember when they promised they'd break up if any one of the band members left? I'm still holding them to that promise. In my mind, they technically broke up when Bill Berry left, and ever since then they've been some kind of bizarro R.E.M. anti-tribute band.

Nick Mirov (nick), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

After Bill Berry left, they went on to make their two best albums since "Automatic For The People" - the second of which was their best ever.

Not that I think that had anything to do with Berry's departure, though, but if they had broken up in 1997, then they'd finished their career with their two worst albums ever.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 15 November 2003 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

What exactly have the surviving members of Nirvana done to tarnish their reputation?

My answer: Pink Floyd

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 15 November 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What exactly have the surviving members of Nirvana done to tarnish their reputation?

Well, Sweet 75 and Eyes Adrift weren't much to write home about.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 November 2003 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

So? I mean, it's not like there's been a ridiculous amount of posthumous Nirvana-related releases over the years a la Jimi Hendrix. Just that muddy banks live record and the compilation.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 15 November 2003 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

...yeah, a compilation that only featured a solitary new track (if I'm not mistaken). Yeah, way to reward the fans!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 November 2003 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Pink Floyd still exists.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 15 November 2003 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

...just not in any meaningful, relevant way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 November 2003 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe not. Nevertheless, "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" was IMO the best thing they'd done since "Animals". And certainly a lot better than anything Roger Waters has ever come up with as a solo act.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 15 November 2003 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Lots and lots of 60's bands that play old-man nostalgia music at county fairs, or even worse one original member with no career gets some filler musicians and re-records the hits for a "new" album. I dunno who to name except I got a Kingsmen tape for like a quarter and it said in the liner notes one of them was pissing off the rest by doing that.

sucka (sucka), Saturday, 15 November 2003 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Pink Floyd still exists.

Gilmour had the best response to this at one of the acoustic shows he did a year or so back. Some guy in the crowd hollered "when's the next Floyd album out?" at him and without missing a beat, Gilmour replied "who gives a shit?"

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

>>What exactly have the surviving members of Nirvana done to tarnish their reputation?
Well, Sweet 75 and Eyes Adrift weren't much to write home about<<

And neither were/are the Foofighters, for crissakes. (I mean, being the most overrated rock band of the past decade is hardly a feather in their cap, though I guess when you're spun off from one of the most overrated rock bands in history, no one should be surprised. I mean, Nirvana themselves were a whole lot more fun to listen to before any of thei members were canonized, you know? Most bands are.)

chuck, Monday, 17 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Eric A is the only one with brains and any dignity.

...as he performs in Alanis Morrisette's band. *wink wink*

The only member of Jane's that doesn't piss me off is Stephen Perkins.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

And he sure is trying hard.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

...as he performs in Alanis Morrisette's band. *wink wink*

These days that must mean a whole $50 per year, so maybe he pities her.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw SNAP!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Since they came up on the other thread, and nobody has mentioned them here yet, I will say Husker Du's and the Replacements's names now, just for kicks. And because they probably *belong* here, in a way.

chuck, Monday, 17 November 2003 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)
