As expected, positive things are already happening in the topsy turvy world of hip hop following Ja Rule's sit-down with the honorable Minister Farrakhan! Behold: The Inc.!

Remember folks, we're all in the same gang!

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 15 November 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Now if the Reverend can just get through to Bruce Springsteen...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 15 November 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

He needs to talk to Rod Stewart before some serious shit goes down at the next Prince's Trust

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the Stewart/Sting battle is getting out of hand. I heard Sting beat down one of Stewart's bodyguards with an Alembic fretless bass outside of a Taj Mahal show in Philly.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 15 November 2003 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

as much as I've loathed NOI antisemitism, Farrakhan seems completely on-point throughout this interview. I thought the whole thing was awesome.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 15 November 2003 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Ja Rule should be forced to shout random two syllable words where he would normally yell "it's murdaaaaah."

I suggest:
"It's chi-ckennnnnnn"
"It's rain-innnnnng"
"It's purrrrrr-ple"

rgeary (rgeary), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

What has 50 had to say about the Farrakhan pow-wow?

Also, have you seen that Irv is dropping the "Gotti" and going back to his given name?

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

He could do that for a frozen dinner commercial:

"It's chi-ckennnnnn! It's fro-zzeeennnn! It's St-ouffeeeerrrrrs! You hu--nggrrryy!"

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe it's not bu-TTAHHHHH!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't know about 50, but his right-hand-man Lloyd Banks seems unconviced of Ja's sincerity in this interview from a couple days ago:

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

if it wasn't for the frequent use of the word brother, I'd have assumed this interview was given by Arsenio Hall.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"This is very revealing, brother, because we are all products of that which God has put within us and the way the environment helps to shape and mold us. This helps me to see the man I've heard about, that I've read about and that I've listened to, a powerful human being: Ja Rule."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"The two of you will heal so many wounds if you come together, wounds you don't even see. Suppose after that we organize a peace tour with you and 50 tearing up the country and the world. The youth will say, "He can clap back and then take it to another level." And let everyone go outta there feeling the power of their youth and strength and the newness of this young man who is really the formation of a whole new world. The Bible says, when the children of Israel came up under Pharaoh, God told Moses to let the old ones die out in the wilderness, and He would take their children and they would inhabit the promised land. I see the promise of everyone who died in slavery in you all. I see the strength in you, but I see that the generation needs direction. You have everything you need to become powerful except guidance, direction. If I can supply that, my brothers can go out and build a whole new reality for themselves and our people. And those three lovely children you have will never be at no graveside mourning because someone took out their daddy in the night over some foolishness. May God bless you, Ja. May God bless you, Irv. May God bless 50 and the crew that flows with him. May God bless hip-hop to rise to its full potential and make the youth of the world instruments of peace rather than instruments of death. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Thank you all. "

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys can bust on this all day if you want, I guess, I still think it's really fucking cool

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Bwahahha. Yeh, I read this a week ago. Amazing comedic value.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

AND LO, LL COOL J, IF YOU AND KOOL MOE DEE CAN PUT ASIDE THE DEATH BLOW AND THE K.O. THAT YOUR MAMA HATH COMMANDED WE SHALL SEE A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THIS COUNTRY WHERE THE CHILDREN WILL ACTUALLY GIVE A SHIT ABOUT "POSITIVITY" RAPPERS, OR AT LEAST RAPPERS WHO P-I-M-P AND LET P-I-M-P. PRAISE BE TO ALL THE RAPPERS WHO ARE NOT AFRAID TO SAY THEY ARE TOO LEGIT TO QUIT. AMEN.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

IMAGINE THE POWER THAT CAN BE WRAUGHT IF THE TWO OF YOU UNITED IN THE COMMON BOND OF SLURRED DELIVERY, FREAKY-ASS BITCHES AND MONEY. I IMAGINE A GOLDEN DAY OF WORLD CLASS SEX RHYMES THE LIKES OF WHICH HATH NEVER BEEN SEEN. PRAISE THE LORD!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Miccio, Farrakhan isn't a Southern Baptist

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

and LL Cool J and Kool Moe Dee were way more talented than 50 Cent and Ja Rule. Point's the same.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I surprised Farrakhan didn't get all freaky with the numerology again. I guess 50 isn't a very biblical number though.

But yeah, John, all in all it's good for the world.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

So we should praise constipated soon-to-be-has-been rappers for not openly declaring a fatwah on a rival who's kicking his ass salewise? Oh wait, his upcoming album is still full of threats and insults directed to 50...ok, should we praise him for letting Farrakhan kiss his ass in public? For a company removing the word Murder from their name now that their success has crested? But I already just sent a boquet of roses to Suge Knight for renaming his company Tha Row!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

You're reading an awful lot of praise into "all in all it's good for the world"

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if it's good for the world that LOUIS FARRAKHAN and a rapper whose latest album debuted behind The Very Best Of Sheryl Crow are exploiting each other for publicity's sake. Especially if Ja Rule is basically sitting back and lying out of his ass while Farrakhan again declares himself a goddamn messiah.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

O Anthony, where is the love?

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

though haha even that album is still above Ja Rule's despite having been out for seven weeks.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Finally! Man am I glad we got that question cleared up. Now if I can just find out what gangsta is I can retire from this site entirely.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

50 was on Stern yesterday and said that Ja's people never told him about the Farrakhan interview until it already happened. he said it was basically a publicity thing to sell Ja's new album which hasn't done too well this week.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i guess that was already brought up. sorry.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

which hasn't done too well this week.

all in all THAT'S good for the world. though am I curious if my fave ILX Thug Sterling's been feeling the album. God knows it has to be better than the new Kid Rock album (though wouldn't it be great if Pat Robertson interviewed HIM?!!).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does "it's a publicity thing" necessarily make it bad? I mean, now you're demanding sincerity from megaplatinum rappers? What next, reality?

His record did debut #1 hip hop.

I cannot believe I'm defending Ja Rule.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Me neither.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

well at my work we have listening stations so all the town can listen before they buy. ALL THE KIDS that have listened to the Ja album tell me is really dissapointing. i havent sold ONE.

Why does "it's a publicity thing" necessarily make it bad?

it doesnt. what makes it "bad thing" is Ja and co making themselves seem all righteous by stompin out the feud when in reality they didnt even contact 50. bringing the religious leader into it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. the new g-unit has boring beats but the rhymes are funny.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

plus the feud sure ain't stomped on the album. I was impressed that MTV.com's "ed." felt the need to point out this hypocrisy in the interview transcript.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

1. The new JR album is actually quite good
2. surprising that so far reaction on-thread is "oh, well, if 50 said it on the Howard Stern show, it must be true"
3. yes - the JR album is full of 50-disses. JR didn't say it wasn't. He said he feels pressure to respond. There's no hypocrisy there as far as I can tell, and in fact, in the most interesting part of the interview, Farrakhan talks about how dozens-playing stuff was part of the calypso scene when he was a singer. Farrakhan's concern is that both artists ought to make sure that things don't get physical (again), because if either artist gets shot, there's no benefit to anybody. I don't think Farrakhan says "you've gotta make only positive records!" and I don't think Rule said "I will!" MTV's editorial bit strikes me as pointless: of course the feud's still going on on JR's new album! That's sort of the whole point here!

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 15 November 2003 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i believe 50.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Saturday, 15 November 2003 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I just hope Farrakhan calls up Kool Moe Dee, cuz I don't think that disfest ever got settled either. Let's not forget Canibus too! Ja ain't the only fading rapper who needs to remind us that he has (or no longer has, I guess) a beef with someone whose career is rising!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Canibus named his latest indie album Rip The Jacker so I have to assume the beef with LL is still on (his previous album even had him rescuing Eminem's "Stan" from a watery grave and the two uniting to challenge Shady!). Plus is Farrakhan and Canibus ever hooked up the interview would be undoubtedly be 100% numerology babble.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"I just hope Farrakhan calls up Kool Moe Dee"

Have you seen this?
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1560255331/qid=1068936814/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-1253207-0664868?v=glance&s=books

By the way, if you search for Kool Moe Dee on Amazon it suggests that you buy DVDs of Crossroads and The New Guy

I no longer have any opinion on the Ja/Farrakhan deal, but I will defend to the death my right to defend Canibus to the death

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Saturday, 15 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Canibus definitely gives Nas a run for the money for Most Fascinatingly Bugfuck Rapper Of All Time.

Man I gotta check out that book! I love Dee's report cards for rappers!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the Nas/Jay-Z beef was easily the best rap beef of all time (ok maybe that time LL walked on Kool Moe Dee's stage and blew kisses at the audience tops it). Jay-Z was just like "yo man you never topped illmatic but you're still here" and Nas responds by rolling his eyes into the back of his head and calling upon pagan spirits to condemn the false prophet to hell with a cup of virgin's blood...which inspired Jay-Z to shut the fuck up.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

What does Bugfuck mean?

d k (d k), Saturday, 15 November 2003 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

crazy

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a synonym of batshit

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, hardly anyone paid attention but Jay-Z's old mentor Jaz-O actually probably scored more points off of Jay than Nas ever did last year. He had a couple of freestyles (one over Nuthin by Nore) and a full song called Ova that used an "Oh Boy" type gimmick with the word "over"....anyway, it was pretty great and called Jay-Z out on a bunch of ancient-history stuff and Inspectah Deck take 'em to court bizness....Jay did some fairly weak responses on mix tapes one was called Murder Marcyville. Never got alot of attention, but Jigga got served pretty good (I just used the word "served" cuz I know what gangsta is!)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 16 November 2003 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i never really paid attention the Jaz-O thing, although I wouldn't be surprised if he ripped Jay a new one. but i thought that whole beef was idiotic because it stemmed from them doing a song together, and then Jay not wanting to be in the video, so Jaz-O went all ballistic. and then Jay brought up the fact that he offered Jaz-O a deal w/ Roc-a-fella way back in the day and got turned down. so if Jaz-O missed that boat and wants to jump back on now, that's his own damn problem.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

All beef in rap is pretty idiotic when it comes right down to it. You should definitely check out those freestyles and "Ova" if you get the chance, though. Ova was released on twelve inch vinyl.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

eight years pass...

http://www.dailycal.org/2012/03/10/louis-farrakhan-gives-speech-at-uc-berkeley/

Farrakhan told audience members that before they interact with Jews, they should read “The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews,” a book that connects Jews to African American enslavement in the Western Hemisphere.

“Why don’t you teach them that the first wonder of this world was not something that Jewish people built when they were enslaved in Egypt. Otherwise they would know how it was done,” he said. “That’s why it’s called the first wonder, because they wonder how it was done.”

While trying to distinguish between the history of blacks in America and other ethnic groups, Farrakhan also crudely mimicked an Asian accent, and proceeded to ask the audience, “Can you imagine Ching Lee Joong with a picket sign?”
