TS: A mid '80s Rhino comp of singing pro wrestlers vs. a Mexican pressing of Human League's "Dare"

From a record shopping excursion last nite:

-The wrestling record features not one but TWO Freddie Blassie songs ("Pencil Neck Geek" and "King of Men", Jerry Lawler making a convincing proto-punkabilly, the terpsichorean stylings of Jesse the Body, "Exotic" Adrian Street camping it up with some sleazy glam rock, and the Novas' "The Crusher". The cover is a thing of unending awesomeness. Fair condition, $2.10.

-The copy of Dare has everything in both languages on the front and back covers, and the spine reads "La Liga Humana", which would make filing the album in question sort of confusing. The lyric sheet, sadly, is in English.

I bought the wrestling album. Did I make the right choice?

And except for a couple of Captain Lou Albano songs there's nothing really remotely related to the awful WWF "Rock n Wrestling" schlock, so that's a relief.

I just noticed: DUSTY RHODES IS PLAYING A FLYING V GUITAR.

And Mil Mascaras is the funky drummer

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

As long as it doesn't have anything like that Slick "I love fried chicken and watty-melon" track, it's all good.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 15 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

how did i know this was nate?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 15 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it doesn't have that. It does make up for my absence of any Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. records by featuring a song by Tau "The Destroyin' Samoan" Logo.

Jess, you knew it was me because these are the unique struggles I face EVERY DAY.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I just say that the "I Can't Wait To Be Alone With My Baby Tonight" off the WWE Anthology album is actually one of the ten best country tunes ever? Thanks.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 15 November 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Slick the guy that did Jive Soul Bro on that Piledriver II album?

Theodore Fogelsanger to thread!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. This sounds better than my 12-inch single of Mr. T's inspirational message for the kids: "Mr. T's Commandments"

what does Jesse sing?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 15 November 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Dare

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 15 November 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

normally i would say the league (shout-out to my homey phil oakey!) b-b-but the COVER OF THAT WRESTLING LP!! did you see it?

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 15 November 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Wu-Tang should totally rip that design off.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 15 November 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Jay Z should totally cop a hook from it.

Xii (Xii), Saturday, 15 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmm.... Seen your shrink lately...??
;-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 15 November 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Emoticons are for asshats.

Jesse sings "The Body Rules". Actually he doesn't really sing. More of a "talk-sing", actually. Which means he shares a stylistic tendency with Lou Reed.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Also: TAMBOURINE-ASSISTED KNEELIFT!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

athos magnani (Cozen), Saturday, 15 November 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

athos magnani (Cozen), Saturday, 15 November 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

and the middle guy, the main guy, looks like the dood with knife-blades coming out his forearms in mortal kombat 2.

athos magnani (Cozen), Saturday, 15 November 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

athos magnani (Cozen), Saturday, 15 November 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

typo acapulco (gcannon), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that's where I also found a French pressing of Boney M's Nightflight to Venus and the "in flames" cover of Street Survivors

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Macalester student: "Jeez, I really like this 2LP Atco comp of all the great Otis Redding singles, but I'm sick of ramen. Cheapo'll give me cash for it!"

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the St. Paul Cheapo roxors eight ways till Sunday

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 15 November 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

that wrestling record is pretty ok, i guess you paid about the right $$$ for it. bet i paid less for it tho (of course). my fav song on there is "i like to hurt people" by johnny legend. my fav song on "dare" is "seconds" or "love action" or "things that dreams etc", that's more favourite songs so "dare" wins. oh well you always see that real cheap (or maybe in america you don't, i don't know)

duane, Saturday, 15 November 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen Dare a few times before, just not referred to as Atrevimiento.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

(actually I don't think that's what the title was translated to; babelfish translates Atrevimiento back as "Audacity".)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 15 November 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
$33?!?! FUCK FUCK FUCK

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Still: Dusty Rhodes choking out Ric Flair with a guitar strap.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

what was keeping you from buying both?

hstencil, Thursday, 4 December 2003 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Zoogz Rift on the wrestling comp.?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 4 December 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The fact that I only had $5 free spending money at that point and in the then-forseeable future. (The Human League album was like $4.50.)

No Zoogz. There's a Boogie Woogie Man Jimmy Valiant track, though.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"Exotic" Adrian Street's musical output is some really fantastic stuff

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFBA402A7DC6EB935

the music was by a gentleman called Don Woods who seems to be a kind of light-entertainment zelig:
