Let's discuss our favorite modern metal bands

My favorites are Lamb of God, Mastodon, and anything Tomas Lindberg is involved with. Generally, I'm a huge fan of technical metal drumming - Origin & Meshuggah come to mind - but find it difficult to get past some of the trite lyrics and cliched guitar riffs. What about yall? Can anyone recommend anything?

I like the Deftones, but that's about as far as it goes.

Not particularly modern, but Immolation are probably my favorite active heavy metal band nowadays. "Unholy Cult" was one of my most awaited albums of 2002, and it absolutely blew me away.

If there's a chance of Gorguts finding a new drummer and waddling on, they'll qualify quite nicely too.

My personal faves - Scumfuckers
Garden of Hell
Nipple Waxers
Porn Platypus

And my album of the year? 'Urinate my Life' by Nuklear CockGods

You mention Meshuggah -- have you tried Fredrik Thordendal's Sol Niger Within, Version 3.33?

Also, i've been looking for Insineratehymn from Deicide -- but can't speak on it qualitatively.

What counts as "modern"? I'm really curious. The bands being mentioned are all over the map, and lots of them don't sound especially new (in fact, some of the ones who sound less "new" actually make better music. But I don't feel like naming any names right now.)

High on Fire, Vital Remains, Morbid Angel, Lickgoldensky (ESPECIALLY lgs, they're amazing), and it pains me to admit that I really dig the new Moonspell album

Napalm Death - 'Enemy of the Music Business' is one of the best metal albums I've ever heard. I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't heard it yet - whether or not you've like ND in the past. The newer one is great too.

No one mentioned Dillinger???

I didn't hear that Napalm Death record, though I loved the title - is it really that good?

Sol Niger Within, Version 3.33

Who keeps letting the damn machine in?

ANAAL NATHRAKH

On the Napalm record, 'Enemy' is THAT GOOD fo sho. Every tunes lyrics are like a big FUCK YOU to their old label Earache who apparently did something to piss the guys off. Musically it basically is a return to the old Napalm sound (and logo!!!) - only with the newer, much more accomplished musicians they have brought in since then. Great album with an interesting concept.
