Why don't rock acts rep their labels like hip-hop acts?

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Sunday, 16 November 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably because it's kind of a stupid idea.

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Sunday, 16 November 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

probably because they tend not to own them, by and large.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 16 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

like rock acts don't get involved with stupid ideas.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Sunday, 16 November 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"Rockin' with Elektra and EMI" - Queen, "Let Me Entertain You"

dave q, Sunday, 16 November 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Workin' for MCA"

dave q, Sunday, 16 November 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Bismarck's right. Plenty of rap acts rep like crazy for their labels even when they don't own 'em, and then a couple of years later, when they learn that they're not actually getting paid and that all the video expenses including helicopter rental/purchase were recoupable, what do they got? Bupkus.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 16 November 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I know that labels fuck people over, i was wondering why it was so common in hip-hop (regardless of ownership issues) and very rare in rock.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Sunday, 16 November 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

In at least one case it was because the label owner sprung the rapper out of prison

dave q, Sunday, 16 November 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

what do they got? Bupkus.

If they worked for Suge Knight, they at least walk away with a heart full of fear.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Bwahahaha!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

why the bwahaha?

if its common for rock acts to shout out label names, gimme some examples...

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

haven't any of you seen the Chris Rock video "Champagne" where he talks about how the Isley Bros. never yelled "T-Neck in the house!" and the Jacksons never gave shoutouts to Epic?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, sorry scott, I thought you were saying that it's rare for rock acts to get screwed by a label.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Sex Pistols to thread

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 16 November 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan, think we both got our wires crossed there :)

Geir, wasn't EMI a diss?

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Sunday, 16 November 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Lee Perry namechecks his record labels. But not in the way they would like.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

US Maple featuring Neil Michael Hagerty and Bonne Prince Billy - "Drag City Mafia (We Run This Shit) - Papa M remix

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

That's not a real record...is it?

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I wish!

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Soundgarden had "Sub Pop Rock City"

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

M.O.D. sang about Megaforce and Jon Zazula and his wife a lot. They even appeared on a few tunes.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

we are all forgetting Enya's big ups to WEA exec Rob Dickens

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

There are some shoutouts to New Alliance on The Whitey Album but I think it's when Thurston is rapping, so I don't know if that counts.

Michael Patrick Brady (Michael Patrick Brady), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Aerosmith was really in love with their wierd looking Geffen A&R guy (John Koladner I think was his name?) in the 80s.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 16 November 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure but I'll take a shot. It is important in rap to have a posse, to band together against the elements against you. Your label is an instant posse, or your label was first a crew that pooled resources and became a label. So you represent.

scott m (mcd), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Bingo. Or should that be, blingo.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

D 'n' B producers also represent don't they?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

whereas a trad rock act would have roadies etc. Good point.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Motorhead's 'We Are the Road Crew'...

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 17 November 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess someone should mention nick lowe's "i love my label," though i'm not entirely sure how it fits into the conversation. it doesn't really come across like a shout-out to *his* label, just a nice little sing-along ditty about a singer and a label.

fact checking cuz, Monday, 17 November 2003 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Cex should do this.

Michael Patrick Brady (Michael Patrick Brady), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Lee Perry namechecks his record labels. But not in the way they would like.

Also see Graham Parker, "Mercury Poisoning" and Afghan Whigs, "Neglekted."

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

jon spencer's repped for matador or at least gerard cosloy on occasion hasn't he?

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle and Sebastian repped for Rough Trade before they were even on it, which is impressive.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

surely their are some daft references to apple in a beatles song or two?

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

well, there's a daft (and slightly sour) reference to the beatles' publishing company in "only a northern song."

fact checking cuz, Monday, 17 November 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Gerard Cosloy, singer of the rock group Envelope." Nary a mention of Lombardi.

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 05:52 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, "blingo" becomes meme beginning NOW!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Sink To The Beat

I'll try to make this perfectly clear
I'm so transparent I disapear
these words I lyrically defecate
upon songs I boldly claim to create
clint steps in to establish the beat
4/4 hip hop and you don't stop
this unique approach to start an EP
intended to shock, create a mystique
a cheap strategy, a marketing scheme
building awareness for the next LP
they've got a good fan base
they've got integrity
they've got a DC sound
Shudder to Think, Fugazi
and Chapel Hill Around The Early 90's
this is the latest from saddle creek

some melodies are like disease
they can inflame your misery
they will infect your memories
they haunt me
some memories are like disease
they can inflame your misery
they will infect your melody
they haunt me

I write these words with my motherly intuition
I shape these sounds into harmonic aparitions
but I can see can see through these haunting things
my moldy dreams are debased by the same hands that shaped them

I'll try to make this perfectly clear
I'm so reflexive i am a mirror
these words I'm driving into the ground
the same words I scream out over the crowd

I'm just an airwave rolling around
I storm and crash without a sound
There's all these islands out at sea
I can't reach

I'm just an airplane diving down
I storm and crash without a sound
engines exploding silently out at sea
where waves caress unstable egos
where melody is completely swallowed
where songwriters chain their songs
to their ankles and
sink to the beat
'til it stops and
bursts under pressure
let it
burst and bloom
hit song
let it burst and bloom

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Monday, 17 November 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

jeez, sorry... didn't mean to post the WHOLE thing... point is, this Cursive song name checks Saddle Creek in a kind of cool way.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Monday, 17 November 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Gerard Cosloy, singer of the rock group Envelope." Nary a mention of Lombardi.

isn't there a track on extra width that camechecks lombardi?

stevie (stevie), Monday, 17 November 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of indie rock labels have musician reps. I can't think of names off the top of my head, but I've heard a number of stories over the years.

Xii (Xii), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a nice Young Fresh Fellows tune from the late 80s or so, called "I'm an Artiste on Frontier". It's pretty keen. Why do I remember these things?
