donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, you COULD put those one one disc.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(many many thanks to good folks, especially Matos, lom/gaz, Arthur, nick, Dougo, Fredsy, job, and the good folks at Jive Time records, Jam records, and Easy Street records in Seattle, for making this possible)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Kenan, I know. I burned the disc. (did i miss something?)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think i need to clarify myself a bit.. the "CD1", "CD2", stuff above is so just in case you are masochistic enough to make this compilation (hell, box set really) for someone who is Mp3/iPod unabled, and you wanted to separate these into redbook CDRs.. hence..

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

oh.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

granted, i think shuffle mode on the entire fucker would produce the greatest sequence of course. :)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

other possible inclusions:

the Go Betweens "Lee Remick" (or "Karen", i'm easy)
the Victims "Television Addict"

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

shit, forgot to add to the last part..

09 Bohannon "Let's Start The Dance" (12" single)
and shift the rest up one each

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Three nitpicky gripes:
1) There's an alarming amount (well, okay, a small handful of tracks) of crossover between this and my '79/'77 comps. But we're probably using different criteria anyways.
2) Dammit, where's Onyx's "Break It Loose (Part 2)"? Granted, it's one of those ridiculous rare groove things that's only available on cratedigger nerd compilations, but whine whine whine I want my obscure funk mope mope I'll shut up now.
3) Radio Birdman, "Burn My Eye '78". Because it always helps when making one of these to have a song with the actual year in it.

Other than that, fuckin' amazing. I'm posting my '77 within an hour so you can pick that apart and get yr payback.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I politely demand an explanation of why "Painterman" over "Rasputin".

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i was wondering the same thing. otherwise: killah!

gaz (gaz), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the earliest comp that's been done?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Three nitpicky gripes:
1) There's an alarming amount (well, okay, a small handful of tracks) of crossover between this and my '79/'77 comps. But we're probably using different criteria anyways.

Mainly, i stuck to things that said "(c) 1978" on the record. To me, it's the most straightforward way to mark something as "1978". Of course, much of the above was recorded in 1977 of course, and much of the above didn't get POPULAR until 1979. So there's what whole gray area that's inevitable.

Amii Stewart, in particular, was a borderline case. Her ALBUM with her hit single didn't get released until 1979, but the 12" I have for "Knock on Wood" (a weird split with Patti Brooks) and some other promotional disco 2LP for radio, both listed the track as "(c) 1978", so i went with it. So I think the single just released just days before New Years 1979 or something.

So, difference in criteria, and of course, on-line info mistakes on dates, we were sure to have overlap. I'm surprised it has been pretty small myself. and if not, so what?

Other mistakes I've only know noted. Plastic Bertrand's "Pogo Pogo" turned out to be the B-side to 1977's "Ca Plain Pour Moi". (HINT HINT WINK WINK, if you haven't already notched this one), so it's really a '77. (though the record "An 1" is 1978).

And Alex Chilton's "My Rival" is really 1979, and recorded in 1978. I would have passed it by had I not noticed you missed this one on your 1979 comp, so i rescued this track.. arf.

2) Dammit, where's Onyx's "Break It Loose (Part 2)"? Granted, it's one of those ridiculous rare groove things that's only available on cratedigger nerd compilations, but whine whine whine I want my obscure funk mope mope I'll shut up now.

Heh, I'm sure I'll have similar things to say about your 77 and 79 comps for different tracks. (i.e. Alex Chilton above, case in point). That's what makes this whole exercise fucking great, IMHO.

3) Radio Birdman, "Burn My Eye '78". Because it always helps when making one of these to have a song with the actual year in it.

Heh, I was going to use Kleenex's "1978" to start off the comp, for obvious reasons. Then i listened to it, and it just wasn't a great way to start the comp. So "Hedi's Head" head.

OK, "Painterman" vs. "Rasputin" It was a tough choice, but "Painterman" makes me want to play it over and over and over again. I don't know the original but i LOVE this version. (Same thing with Amii Stewart's "Knock On Wood"). I'm a sucka for neckta.. so "Painterman" it was.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What do we, the lowly, have to do to get a copy of this? I have my trusty 1993 handy...

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus, that beginning KICK in "Painterman". It practically gave birth to modern funk house (Chicken Lips, Kingsize records stuff, etc.)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Kenan, is that your real email addy you're posting with? If so, i'll send you a line...

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's my "spam" address, but it works just as well and as quickly as my other ones.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What do we, the lowly, have to do to get a copy of this?
I was about to ask the same question.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 17 November 2003 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

earliest that's been done: Nate's 1972. I am slowly working on a 1920s comp, though.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 06:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, I'm probably gonna do a 2003 mix, and then after that, an area I sort of need a bit of schooling in: 1959.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 17 November 2003 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(all I know is: MILES COLTRANE ORNETTE MINGUS.)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 17 November 2003 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

weird, i was just about to say that the only pre-1990 year i could handle might be 1959!

rob geary (rgeary), Monday, 17 November 2003 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i think conway twitty rocked the charts that year, but you also had elvis, nina simone and sinatra, among others i can't recall.

rob geary (rgeary), Monday, 17 November 2003 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCKERS! I was gonna do '59!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't start getting into music into the turn of the 80s... so honestly, a lot of the above i never heard until just a few days ago, if not a few years ago... comps like these are weird that way.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Custos, is there a way you can encode your real email address here, in a spammer free manner, so i can send you the info on how to get it?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

easy. A corrected email link is here

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love a copy of this,too!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Ditto!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, custos, though sadly, your method of providing your email address wasn't spammer free... (spammer-spawned page sniffers can read inside the html itself as well as what it produces)

But I have recorded your email address anyway, so if you want the mods to delete it, you now can go ahead. :)

Jay Vee, jaymc.. are those your real addresses? or valid enough spam addresses, at least?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine's real. Mail away!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, me too! This is the real address.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i can offer a copy of reader's digest's "remembering the 50's" in exchange for this lovely set.

mason butler, Monday, 17 November 2003 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

once i get home tonight, i'll email everybody above... (assuming you're using real email addies above)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not, but if you hit me via webmail you can do it thru my super-seekrit "private address"

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

nate, if i got your real first and last name correct (and if not, i have my sources.. muahahahahaa), and it's just a matter of filling in the stars in the email address you just used, i'll email that tonight too.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, you're on some Wheel of Fortune shit

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

That said, being anal retentive, I did manage to come up with a CD9 ;-)

Kate Bush – Wuthering Heights
The Ruts – In A Rut
Herman Kelly – Dance To The Drummer’s Beat
The Only Ones – Miles From Nowhere (Peel Session version)
Edwin Birdsong – Cola Bottle Baby
Elton John – Ego
Hi-Tension – Hi-Tension
Steve Reich – Music For A Large Ensemble
Patti Smith Group – Because The Night
The Cure – 10.15 Saturday Night
Joe Walsh – Life’s Been Good
Subway Sect - Ambition
Bryan Ferry – Sign Of The Times
Andrew Gold – Never Let Her Slip Away
Al Hudson – Spread Love
Sylvester – You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)
Tom Robinson Band – Power In The Darkness
Dire Straits – Sultans of Swing
Ian Dury & The Blockheads – Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick
Rush – La Villa Strangiato

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ruts – In A Rut

I thought this was '79? (Acc. to the CD I have) Otherwise, I woulda used it. Awww.

The Cure – 10.15 Saturday Night

Yeah, Technically Small Wonder released "Killing An Arab" at the very tail end of 1978.. but, eh, I always saw the Cure as a band that started in 1979, really. (I bent that rule for Amii Stewart, mainly because she was a one hit wonder, and that song was a cornerstone of my musical growing up)

Sylvester – You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)
Ian Dury & The Blockheads – Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick

More of my "aww damn. missed it" pile. Also, I shoulda added D.O.A.'s "Disco Sucks".

Patti Smith Group – Because The Night
Kate Bush – Wuthering Heights
Steve Reich – Music For A Large Ensemble
Bryan Ferry – Sign Of The Times
Dire Straits – Sultans of Swing
Rush – La Villa Strangiato

Listened to all of these and they just didn't hit my buttons. I REALLY gave the Bryan Ferry solo record of that year a chance but it did nothing for me, even the VU cover.

Turned down the Tom Petty, Boston, and Jefferson Starship records from '78 immediately. (Puke puke puke).

Tried to add Styx's "Lords of the Ring" for LARFS, but couldn't track down the Mp3. Same with a Todd Rundgren song.

Same deal with Rolling Stones's "Miss You", got the mp3, but it skipped, and then it was the 11th hour, and I said "fuck it. everyone's heard this fucker a million times anyway, and it's far more boring than 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?' while mainly doing the same thing anyway, so why bother?"

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

But yeah, please! more omissions. Thank you Jeff and ESOJ.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 23 November 2003 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHA, go Geir..

Basically, here's what's on your list that I regret not putting on the comp:

32. I Must Be In Love – The Rutles

or just the Rutles, period. Damn, how did I miss them?

Always wanted to explore more 10cc, as I'm sure they would have had a zinger for this.

Otherwise, there's quite a bit of overlap between your list and mine, and tracks I was very close to considering using by the same artist. (The Cars "Moving in Stereo" was a great choice.. i just wish the song was shorter)

The only thing on the list that made me hurl was Wings. I tried to find a good Wings track by previewing a Best of 2CD that was used at my neighborhood store, and came to the conclusion that, aside from "Coming Up", Wings just plained suck their entire span. (Sorry, Geir, will have to agree to disagree here)

Including "Jet"?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, Donut Bitch. Your package is compiled and ready for mailing.
Be prepared.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Monday, 24 November 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Lord, thank you and I forgot to answer your questions about font and lighting..

font is "Akka"

pea-soup lighting was because of my camera. The paint on the walls there are normally a light beige.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 24 November 2003 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
So, is Custos the only guy who mailed me the proper stuff to get this compilation, or is my mailman just throwing away my mail?

(Custos, the reason it's been a while since I've been able to return your CD is because you gave me a slim case... unfortunately, the booklet and cover art that comes with this requires a larger standard jewel case, and i had to make a special trip to stock up on more jewel cases and DUAL cases for the next project that I'm currently plotting... so, again, apologies for the delay there, Lord.. yours will be coming! and you'll understand the delay!)

DB, I was listening to this all weekend long as I drove around town. Loved that Ants song, I need to get the Peel sessions. Is that Jordan singing? She sounds incredible, she should have made more records. Also, I never made it through "We're Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together" before-- I tthink that was when I decided Lou's vocals had become too constipated for me to put up with any longer--but the ending is great, it's so "Here Come the Warm Jets".

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 15 December 2003 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I think it's the one time there was an Ants song that did NOT have Adam singing lead. Adam and the Ants have a pretty complicated history before they released anything. They were quite known among punk circles starting around '76, always being the opener for whatever what was hot at the time. Jordan, this rather rambuctious very punk girl, took over as the band's manager circa 78, and was the main impetus to the band becoming fashion clowns, for better or worse (though most will agree for the better). And I guess she made herself the lead on that one song "Lou". Yeah, her voice is amazingly caustic and she should have formed her own band, for fuck sakes!

Lou Reed's "Real Good Time Together" can be a really difficult song to listen to if you're in the wrong frame of mind. Lou has never sounded more nervous and creepy than at the beginning of that song. If you're at all in a panicky mood, it's the last thing you want to hear. But, man, that tremelo swirl of guitar sounds! The first five seconds of this song invented every drone rock band guitar sound that eminated from the 80s and 90s.

Awesomely nice art for the CD, db!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 2 January 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a copy of this from Matos a couple weeks ago and holy moses who in blazes are La Dusseldorf?! Also that Squeeze song is synthpunk noir and therefore my favorite-so-far thing on that comp (that I haven't already heard, at least).

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

When I finish the '75 comp (and I haven't even started it yet, other than the first two tracks) the rigamorale is going to Brian for re-mastering 'cause this thing just sounds so creamy!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure about Hong Kong Garden - think i'd prefer Staircase or Playground Twist.

The lyrics of Hong Kong Garden are an intentional joke, right?

While the population
Junk floats on polluted water
An old custom to sell your daughter
Would you like number 23
Leave your yen on the counter please

Bob Six (bobbysix), Saturday, 3 January 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

the artwork on this is fucking beautiful db!

nate la dusseldorf are klaus dinger ex neu and michael rother.

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 3 January 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

La Dusseldorf have Rother?? I thought the two acrimoniously separated after "Neu 75". I figured La Dusseldorf was just Klaus and friends. Maybe I should go back and read my K-rock history a little closer.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 3 January 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

(and you can thank gaz for the inclusion of La Dusseldorf on the comp, btw)

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 3 January 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

no, yr right db. no rother...i is idiot.

gaz (gaz), Saturday, 3 January 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(Custos, the reason it's been a while since I've been able to return your CD is because you gave me a slim case... unfortunately, the booklet and cover art that comes with this requires a larger standard jewel case...
ooops. Didn't know there was going to be a full booklet. I am grateful though. So far, you're swap wins the award for "Best Presentation"

...and i had to make a special trip to stock up on more jewel cases and DUAL cases for the next project that I'm currently plotting... so, again, apologies for the delay there, Lord.. yours will be coming! and you'll understand the delay!)

nickn (nickn), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:26 (twenty years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 8 November 2004 20:41 (twenty years ago)
