Friday night the Twilight Singers took a couple shots on Ryan Adams. Im not sure why, but they did. Other easy targets that ive noticed are the Vines/Hives/Strokes. Any thoughts?

Any thoughts?
Yes, now and again. Especially when I read Adorno. But not on this subject.

I've always thought it's a total dud, unless there's some specific name-calling war going on. The WORST thing is when a headlining band makes cracks about their opener - even when the opener sux, it's ungracious.

I was just using this as an example. Not that anyone cares what the overweight and aging lead singer from the Afghan Whigs thinks.

I like staged interband flamewars between friend-bands, cuz then you can say all the shit you really think about them and they laugh instead of throw beer bottles at you.

I will have the power of numbers when i start my metal orchestra. There wont be a band in the world that will challenge our supremacy.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Generally dud. An artist has nothing to gain by slagging off another artist.

Although - Hamell on Trial on Friday Night made a joke about Justin Timberlake - when he got punk'd being all "Yo Dawg" and then called his mom. "Oh, fuck off - you called your mom." Well, it was funny to me.

What about taking crack while other artists are on stage? With Kylie at Wembley, for example, that might be advantageous.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 17 November 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Neither did Kylie.

Mark E Smith belittling Brix onstage, reducing her to tears.
Would anyone wanna hang out with this guy?

peepee (peepee), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently Pete Waterman does.

Nicky Wire to thread "I wish Michael Stipe would go the same way as Freddie Mercury" amongst other gems.

A couple of times when I saw Pavement Malkmus changed the line in "Range Life" to be about bands from whatever town they were playing that night. Favorite was this one time in Louisville, when he changed it to "Out on tour with the Endtables," that being a pretty obscure 1979-or-thereabouts punk band that I think was on one of those Bloodstains comps.

Definetely dud. Usually comes across as petty and insecure. Out of curiousity, how were the Twilight Singers? Did they play many Afghan Whigs songs? I miss that band and wasn't terribly impressed with the first TS album.

Tiffany called Madonna a "tampon-munching midget" on stage earlier this year. It was quite a small stage, but still.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

.. And by "Stage" of course you mean "area set aside near the stroller rental" .

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I recall Mark Kozelek at a Red House Painters show about 10 years ago launching into a rant prompted by hearing Evan Dando described as 'the best songwriter of the decade' or somesuch on MTV in his hotel room earlier in the day. We all laughed and applauded, like giggly enthralled sheep.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, mostly dud, but that last one is valid.

Christian Rawk (Christian Rawk), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Dulli made fun of the Strokes, Coldplay, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sheryl Crow, and others I am forgetting last night. He likes the Darkness though.

Taking Cracks: dud.
Kicking in the stomach: classic.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

People don't mind when standup comics do it - why should bands be any different. "That's not what they're there for." Bollocks, they have free rein of the stage and if they want to use that to be rude about their peers then they can.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, i knew this thread was gonna involve ryan adams in some way....
