Sorry for being U.S. centric.

Alaska? (Hawaii?)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Jewel's from Alaska. Wasn't Poi Dog Pondering from Hawaii? Walter Becker lives there now.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 17 November 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Alaska = Jewel!

cross-post.

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The Dambuilders were also from Hawaii before moving to Boston.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

G.G. Allin, Jon Spencer, for starters.

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Maine

Cerberus Shoal, Dick Curliss, Rustic Overtones have all been moderately successful.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

that's gotta be the hardest working "moderately" in show biz.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Captain Sleep (Captain Sleep), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Maine= Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary (thought we might have a shutout state there for a bit).

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I come up stumped on New Mexico. Buddy Holly doesn't count.

briania, Monday, 17 November 2003 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The Shins, as noted on other threads, are from there. Also, the Handsome Family and Neil Michael Hagerty live there.

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Montana?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Asked this question the other night while waiting for the White Stripes at Lupo's in Providence, RI. What has Rhode Island done for the world, musically? I don't count Talking Heads (who went to Rhode Island School of Design, but weren't from Rhode Island).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Rhode Island has produced tons of great bands, among them Arab on Radar, Six Finger Satellite, Lightning Bolt, etc., etc., etc. (have you been asleep the past decade?).

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't think of anything from Montana off-hand, though.

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

oh shit, scratch that: Silkworm and Steve Albini are both from Missoula.

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Arab on Radar, Six Finger Satellite, Lightning Bolt, etc., etc., etc.

I see that "great" is a relative term.

(have you been asleep the past decade?).

Once again, Stence fails to resist the urge to be patronizing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry Alex but saying there's been no bands, great or otherwise, from Rhode Island since the Talking Heads makes me seriously wonder what you're thinking. Rhode Island bands are mentioned all the time on ILM (hello JON WILLIAMS).

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

What's NH done lately?

Or for that matter Nunavut, NWT or YK?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

how about wyoming?

Andrew Calaman (Andrew Calaman), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

South Dakota

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess Wyoming, just because it's the most sparsely populated.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Rhode Island has Sage Francis.

I'd def. say that the western states would dominate this.
North Dakota?
Utah?
Idaho?

ddrake, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Idaho = Built to Spill
North Dakota = aforementioned Lawrence Welk

hstencil, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Arkansas?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Bill Clinton, saxaphone playing president!

hstencil, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 08:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Arkansas - Johnny Cash, among many others. Still stuck on Wyoming, though.

briania, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, Wyoming. Country star & singing cowboy Chris LeDoux is from Cheyenne.

briania, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Asleep.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Or for that matter Nunavut, NWT or YK?

I was gonna say:

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf000/f096/f09647sy58r.jpg

but it turns out she's from Churchill, Manitoba.

Damn.

Captain Sleep (Captain Sleep), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

But those are territories, anyway. I sense that a similar thread for Canada would not provoke as much debate.
