I'm So Fucking Sick of "Let's Get It On"

The most overplayed "luvin'" tune ever. In 9,624,961 commercials, the worst of which has to be a recent one w/ nine year-olds (the commercials alone could be a S/D).

The song is now so un-sexy, it provokes near-violent reactions in me. I hate it.

Which sux because there was a time when it wasn't horribly overplayed, and when I'd hear it I'd be like "whoa, this is fucking awesome"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I love it!

Shame about "Heard It Through The Grapevine" and "Ain't No Sunshine", though.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but that commercial brings back fond memories to band nerds everywhere.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ditto "I Feel Good." Nauseatingly overused.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Dom, but using that song just seems SO WRONG. It seems one tiny step short of "Sexual Healing"...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It does seem kind of the wrong song to use with, like, little kids.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

LGIO used to have some kind of claim to having been the most successful single, in terms of world-wide sales, not to have been a top 30 hit in the UK. So it isn't over-exposed here.

Yeah. But that's not really my main beef w/ the song, anyway, rather the overplayedness of it all. I mean, a lot of songs are overplayed. But it seems "Let's Get It On" has the double-whammy of also having become this totally generic—and fairly grody—mood setter for white people who want to feel nasty.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time I hear that song on TV, I want to go put the CD on and listen to it several times in a row. And the kids spot was hilarious.

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic: Marvin Gaye singing "let's get it on"
Dud: anyone else singing "let's get it on"

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

My TA at UCSC told me that the key to living a good life was listening to let's get it on once every day.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I feel so alone.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i think he was dating patricia arquette's sister

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

or her best friend

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't that the song PETA used on the ad about how you should spay your cats?

Chris Dahlen (Chris Dahlen), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

There was never a point when I didn't think it was crap. I do like "Trouble Man," though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed, sick of it. Also sick of "what's going on" for socially conscious montages.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 17 November 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

somehow I'm not sick of it. Probably cuz I don't watch TV much anymore and its been years since I've seen Nine Months. Since ads tend to ignore most of the lyrics, if I FOCUS on the lyrics than the jingle-factor tends to dwindle.

Anybody else here seen NINE MONTHS?!?!?!?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Trouble Man is probably my favorite Marvin Gaye song.
But yeah, "Let's Get it On" is good enough to transcend shitty advertising exploitation. That said, it really doesn't work romantically anymore because of overexposure. Its sorta corny that way.

ddrake, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

There is always "Sexual Healing" to put on instead.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Blame Jack Black in "High Fidelity".

nonthings (nonthings), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Nine Months is HORRIBLE.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually had the exact same reaction to this commercial - an "arrrghh not again!" kinda thing. I really do blame this North American media over-exposure phenomenon someone already mentioned upthread. I'll add "Play That Funky Music" to the list as well. Bastards.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

aw. I could never get sick of "Play That Funky Music"! Especially with those disco conversion lyrics.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i too would place a fair share of the blame on that scene from hi fidelity.

fidsofjiosd, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard a commentary related to this on the radio the other day.

This annoying hipster was going on about how commercials never use original jingles anymore, but rather buy rights to already existing songs.

He was lamenting the demise of the jingle. In Japan, the jingle is still alive and well. People go around singing jingles from commercials all the time.

I'd much rather here a good jingle, than a good song being used to sell something.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, I never even thought about it but that's pretty dead on (same could be said for movies using less original music).

MENTOS!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorta makes you think.

That mentos song is catchy as shit.

ddrake, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Come Get To This.....great, Lets Get It On....great, Keep Gettin It On....great.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Jingles remain a local phenomenon, often covered by bands. My favorite one in Minneapolis: "National American University."

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with this thread title. Why don't stations play 'You sure love to ball' more often?

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sexual Healing" came out when I was 10. It made me feel dirty.

Really, it did.
