20,000 miles to an oasis
20,000 years will I burn
20,000 chances I wasted
Waiting for the moment to turn

I would give my life to find it
I would give it all
Catch me if I fall

DOO DOODOO DOODOO!!!

Walking through the woods I have faced it
Looking for something to learn
30,000 thoughts have replaced it,
Never in my time to return

I would give my life to find it
I would give it all
Catch me if I fall
All alone
Waiting to fall

DOO DOODOO DOOO DOO!

40,000 stars in the evening
Look at them fall from the sky
40,000 reasons for living
40,000 tears in your eye

I would give my life to find it
I would give it all
Catch me if I fall

DOO DOODOO DOODOO!

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like some of his background harmonies, especially during the last verse of "So. Central Rain".

also, I like how he went from his Bill Gates-lookalike phase circa their first Unplugged to the outfits he sported on the Monster tour a la above in just a couple short years.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE MIKE MILLS! THE GRAPHIC ARTIST IS AN IMPOSTER (THOUGH I LIKE HIS PAPAS FRITAS VIDEO)!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

this left-eyed chap nearly managed to scare me, huh

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(did the second album track he ever sang lead on HAVE to feature such a prominent bass riff? was he trying to give us a taste of the Mike Mills solo experience?)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

a long-trusted source informed me once that all my favorite early REM songs were written largely by Mills.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

has he ever done anything solo or of any significance outside R.E.M.?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I know for sure he wrote "Rockville." Recently he did some kinda covers show in Athens that Bill Berry drummed on. He did a bunch of political covers including "Elected" by Alice Cooper.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

not to spam this w/ photos but he looks pretty REM-core, don't he?

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

His "Roadrunner" on the Backbeat soundtrack aces any of the Dave Pirner stuff.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

has THE ONE TRUE MIKE MILLS he ever explained what happened between 1993 and 1994 re: nudie suits and haircut?

(ok yeah the FAKE Mike Mills does look like an extra from the video for "The One I Love" or he would if he was looking to the right)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

one day i woke up at my girlfriend's house and she was ironing her skirt or something and she had on good morning america or one of those morning shows and mike mills was on as a music guest and performed a song that was better than the songs of that REM-era (93-94).

at least i think it was mike mills, it could have been stanley jordan, or mac davis.

*googles*

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone seen the short film "Deformer" (I think that's what it's called) by the designer Mike Mills? It's a skate film, kind of, but really a documentary about a specific skater (don't know who.) I was blown away by that.

REM Mike Mills search: cover of The Troggs' "Love is All Around." Incredible song, command performance.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! You may be thinking about Mike Mills being on Live w/ Regis and Kathie Lee right before the Grammy awards when REM was nominated for Out of Time. I believe he actually performed an acoustic "Don't Go Back to Rockville."

Why is this stored in my permanent memory and I cannot, on good days, remember what my major in college was?

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

woah. Mike Mills solo on Regis and Kathie Lee is actually weirder then when Michael Stipe was on and Kathie Lee kept saying "Patty Smyth" instead of "Patti Smith" (though it's not as cool as Regis telling Stipe that he's diggin' the eyeshadow).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Gygax! I've also heard from some old REM crony that one true divine Mike Mills wrote most of their songs and is the real genius of the band. Why haven't we heard this from more sources, though? He must be a very humble fellow.

And, God, I can't stand the other Mike Mills. That photo gives me the creeps. Though Roman Coppola is a sweetheart.

Saucy Ding Dong (Arthur), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the mike mills is awesome.

sincerely,

epstein's mother, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The bridge to "Fall on Me"
And I think that's him singing lead on "Superman"
Lifes Rich Pageant is Mike's finest moments.

spittle, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i miss being able to listen to REM without wanting to post a bomb to michael stipe. solamente mike mills tour 04

jill, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The man is an embarrassment and to make matter worse, one of my friends, for whom I have the greatest respect, thinks he is the best member of REM. I heard that version of love is all around cos it was on NME's REM unplugged. Pretty it aint. Sorry for the interruption. Carry on.

jericho harris, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Jericho, let us stand side by side. Mike Mills is only there to make the other two look good. If it hadn't been for Bill Berry's brain exploding on stage, he's still be the fourth best member of REM. As it is, he's scaled the heights to third best. Which still means worst.

Did you know that Mike Mills was banned from having his photo taken without glasses on after the promotional shots for Murmur, in which he looks, to paraphrase the Stipester, like a paraplegic weasel?

Mike Mills is a floppy-haired, Vegas-suited, meekly geeky loser.

Baron Wasteland, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

if anyone wants to hear mike mills sex gossip say 'yes' (I am assuming 'no')

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Mills (designer/filmmaker/laid-back guy) = classic

Mike Mills (bass player/harmony singer/Nudie suit wearer) = s'alright I guess. He has added more to the band than some generic bass dude woulda, but I guess that's part of why they're them, innit?

He does appear to have the smallest feet in rock 'n' roll.

Lee G (Lee G), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I like when Mike Mills plays the piano.

He's a great songwriter. He's good with melody, and a lot of R.E.M.'s most beautiful songs are mostly written by him.

He wrote most of the music for "Tongue," and that's almost enough for me.

Underrated Mills performance: the backing vocals on "Binky The Doormat."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

It's never been a secret that Mills has written a lot of the band's music. From what I understand, Mills and Buck just come up with songs on their own, and Stipe picks which ones he wants to sing on, and then they start working together on a finished product.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice harmonies

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Great Harmonies & Nudie suits, what more do you need?

kar120c, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The tracklisting on "In Time" is fucking atrocious. No Drive, for a start, but not ncluding 'Near Wild Heaven' over 'All the Way to Reno' strikes me as Stipe-megalomania.

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't know much 'bout his musical contributes - in or out of R.E.M. - but i saw the 3 guys one night interviewed by Charlie Rose. And Mills - in contrast to Buck - took a pretty strong anti file-sharing stance. Can't remember exactly what he said but I remember him using some stupid ass analogy trying to compare downloading to theft/stealing.

pheNAM (pheNAM), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Blount pleeze give all REM gossip possible pleeze thank you

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I found him so inspiring when I was a kid because he was so geeky-looking.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

Alex In Baltimore: I just love that Mills occasionally feels the need to play slap bass in the most un-slap bass-y band of all time.

Let's get a tracklisting for The Bassman, He Had All The Right Moves: The Best Of Mike Mills CD-R.

"Texarkana" (the most obvious of the obvious)
"Finest Worksong" (savin' the best for last!)

da croupier, Thursday, 11 October 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

No songs will be included for great keyb work, we're talking strictly BASS maybe some key vocal work like "Near Wild Heaven" and "Star Me Kitten."

da croupier, Thursday, 11 October 2007 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

though then we gotta throw "Superman" and "Love Is All Around" on too

da croupier, Thursday, 11 October 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

I put "Radio Song" (serious slap bass!) on my version but I anticipate the veto.

Is that the guy from the NFL "..and Liam" commercials?

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 11 October 2007 03:36 (eighteen years ago)

the sister of non-REM mike mills is DJing a show on my college radio station right now

max, Thursday, 11 October 2007 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

I've known at least two other Mike Mills, both of whom preferred to be called "Michael Mills".

the Butter 08 album is a secret classic

far beyond steendriven (some dude), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

eleven months pass...

Hard not to like a guy who'd jump on Steve Wynn's chat on ESPN.com yesterday to initiate this exchange:

Mike (Athens, GA)
Will the great Mike Mills, of The Mike Mills Experience featuring Mike Mills, be making any more appearances with The Baseball Project?

Steve Wynn (2:00 PM)

Mike is our utilityman, always on the bench and ready to go. He hit it out of the park in Spain for us last summer. He can play all nine positions and is a full-on honorary member of the band. He'll be involved in the next record for sure and will be on stage with us. Although if this is Mike, I take it all back. I don't want him to get a swelled head. He's a member of our Oscar Gamble's Afro Fantasy League, and he won ten bucks from me last year, so there's no love lost there.
