when's the last time that buying a record felt like a challenge?

what's the last music you purchased (or otherwise attained) knowing that it wasn't 'your kind of thing', and that enjoying it might require 'work'? and how did it all turn out in the end?

Six months ago; Darkthrone (recommended to me by the metal guy in the music shop); turned out well. I love that shit now, and I feel as if there are whole new vistas to explore in and around it.

A lady I was very fond of swore that Ben Harper was the bees knees. So I bought Fight For Your Mind and it had one good song on it, Ground On Down. But I'm afraid he does nothing for me and in a non pesonal way I dislike his music and his worthiness. I didn't have the guts to tell her my true opinion, and even saw him live a few times (yawn). Maybe me not telling her is why the relationship never worked :)

Never go to Australia then - every second girl here is a Harper fan.

yeah, he's awful, and him (and Jack Johnson) seem to have an unreasonably high profule in Australia and New Zealand.

You know, everytime I see this thread title I try to think of a time where it was difficult and challenging to buy a certain record. For example, I had to fly to Australia to buy the Strokes record with "NYC Cops" on it. I could've special-ordered it off the internet, but that wouldn't have been as challenging.

wow, that's a lot of effort to get an album that includes its worst song.

I had to shop at Other Music once, after my attempts to mail order a certain CD from Belgium failed miserably.
