I've lost my mind and want to make a drum solo compilation - recommend!

I have no idea why, but the urge for a 80 minute cd of drum solos has struck me hard. Any good recommendations? I like rock drumming more than jazz, so I can pass on Krupa and Rich. Thanks.

the one from carlos santana's 'soul sacrifice' at woodstock

also: there's gotta be some great james brown stuff.

Rich vs. Roa-oh nevermind.

Um, the drum solos from all those double live albums? A couple Rush, Led Zep solos, and the Drummers of Ozzy should fill up a cd.

The solo from "Philosophy of the World" by the Shaggs comes to mind for some reason....

Jimi Hendrix Experience. Either Isle of Wight or Incident at Rainbow Bridge, I'm having trouble remembering which*. "Machine Gun". Ten fucking minutes of Mitch Mitchell at his most Mitch Mitchellest. Unfriggingodly.

*I had a tape with these concerts on either side, and so I often get them confused

Sergio Mendes Fanfarra/Maghalena off of Brasiliero for some big batucada drums.

Art Blakey's Orgy in Rhythm (Vol. 1-2) is loaded with goodies. Similarly styled, an early Horace Silver / Art Blakey outing features two tracks with Sabu ("Nothing But Soul" and "Message From Kenya").

Ragas featuring tabla or, particularly, ghattam can be more invigorating than the standard fair.

Oh, Max Roach's M'Boom! The studio album and Live at S.O.B's. Trust me, they don't sound like jazz drumming (except for the playing Body & Soul on a musical saw bit. Maybe.).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, the percussion duet on King Crimson 'Thrak' is really good.

"Let There Be Rats" - (originally Rat Scabies solo, also included on a few Damned releases)

You have to use Rhino's drum solo on "Achilles: The Agony and Ecstasy" by Manowar.

I may just be totally deluded, but I'm f*cking positive that there's a Minutemen track that is 'just' George Hurley. Is it on, uh... Double Nickels mayhap?

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

mitch mitchell's intro to "i don't live today" off of "the concerts".

dan (dan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't think of a Minutemen drum solo - but there are two on fROMOHIO:
"'nuf That Shit, George" and "Let the Drummer Have Some"

Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny Johanson from the Allmans on any version of "Mountain Jam" should set you straight; might as well go for the one on Eat A Peach. There are tons of Hart/Kreutzmann duets too but I don't like them as much.

Ian Paice on "The Mule" from Deep Purple's Made in Japan is good.

Don Brewer on "T.N.U.C." from Grand Funk's Live Album is a bit of a snoozer.

Ronald Shannon Jackson's Pulse record is a winner - heavy solo percussion with pronounced rock leanings.

Maybe try to seek out the records by Les Batteries (I think there are three) - Guigou Chenevier from Etron Fou Leloublan and Rick Brown from Fish & Roses doing percussion duets.

Of course I'd also recommend dumping the rock bias and getting Andrew Cyrille's What About? and Han Bennink's Nerve Beats and Milford Graves's Percussion Ensemble records, but that's just me.

And, you know, "The Drum Thunder Suite" from Art Blakey's Moanin' lp slays everything...

The George Hurley solo track on Double Nickels is "You Need The Glory" and it's all bongos and goofy humming.

Also, you gotta have the live Zep on there: "John Bonham-am-am! Moby Dick-ick-ick!".

BrianB, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

You Need The Glory

-oh yeah.. I always hated that song. Irritating.
