is it large print?

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Sting's blue eyes stare out from the cover

They are already dead to me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's way easy to make fun of this, and I have zero interest in actually reading it, but I don't think it's a horrible thing that those who are interested in the Eagle and Cassandra Wilson and want to read about have a magazine aimed at them.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

(ned, the russians love their children, too!)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, they banned Sting from airplay in the eighties precisely for that reason! (Or at least I hope they did.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ned, you're obviously still upset over sting screwing andy sumner and stewart copeland out of royalties. this hatred of sting is eating you up inside....you should really talk to someone (like John Hiatt - he's reall understanding) about your feelings.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The PAIN!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Or maybe because of his awful fucking cameo in "Dune"?

Didn't sting get his start in a hair products commercial?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I poop too much.

Labia, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it's a horrible thing that those who are interested in the Eagle and Cassandra Wilson and want to read about have a magazine aimed at them.

i agree. unfortunately, it's a horrible magazine that's being aimed at them, at least based on the premiere issue, which is full of short, insight-free fluff. there's a decent article by tom moon on visa problems for international artists trying to get to the u.s.; everything else appears to be lifted verbatim from either (a) people magazine, (b) record company bios, or (c) both.

and, oh yeah, they put the front-of-the-book stuff in the back and the back-of-the-book stuff in the front. wonder how many meetings it took to come up with that innovation.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I just liked that this article treated the creators like they were some revolutionary for marketing something to old people...like the writer never heard of Matlock!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Feyd, my lovely Feyd..."

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I haven't seen it so I have no idea whether it's good or not...From what you say, sounds pretty boring, even given the subject matter. I'm a big Mojo guy, but that's more of a history/collector obsessive vibe. Who knows? Maybe the music they're covering so dull it would be impossible to make it interesting.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

plus, No Depression already covers everything new my dad (who's an old dude) cares about anyway.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

and they do a damn fine job.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I like No Depression, they have a really inclusive definition of "alt country"....one month it might be a cover on some old school guy like Merle and the next the Drive-By Truckers.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

VH1: the magazine

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

VH1 Classic: The Magazine.

i'd read that one!

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

As a 31-year-old man, I'd just like to thank the publishers for creating a magazine for me and my contemporaries. Your young-people magazines are full of obtuse colloquialisms, cussing and photographs of piercings and tattoos. In my dotage, I want to read about unchallenging, middle-of-the-road artists who make me feel entitled.
This magazine will complete me.

Christian Rawk (Christian Rawk), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a good point.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Mack!

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

See, as an old codger, what I like about the approach of a magazine like Mojo is that the articles are really detailed and biographically oriented, rather than a fleshed-out press release. This is good for people like me who want to know about the inner lives and of creative artists (hehehe, maybe I'm a potential stalker). Even though I haven't heard of many of these artists ("'Gonzales'? OK...", I say to myself as I read Mojo), I like the approach more. The writing is better int hese mags, not necessarily the music.

Say (haha, pure fantasy I know) a magazine came out tomorrow that got well into the daily recording and writing activities of the current crop of rock, hiphop or electronic or whatever artists, covering their thoughts, activities, release history, quirks etc... this is what I mean by 'biographically oriented... then yeah, I'd be buying that magazine every issue. What I don't like is 'Here's our new album, we're touring, we're so successful'-style interviews, or ''they rock, they roll, they jam and they mix' live reviews. Or articles that come over like an episode of lifestyles of the rich and famous.

Look, I know we've been here before countless times, thanks for your patience.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Old people are everywhere ... damn, I thought this was going to be a thread about "Mr. Peabody's Apples" and/or "Four Flicks". Sartre said that people end up with the face they deserve. The yuff are to blame for not rising up and making Helter Skelter roll along its merry way.

Kjoerup@yahoo.com, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

For issue#2, their cover article is a re-printed SPIN piece on Elliott Smith with all references to "Elliott Smith" crossed out and "Jackson Browne" written in their place.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

coming soon: a blog for older people

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ. I may be old, but I'm not dead.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Although the goal is to be a monthly, it will publish only five issues next year.

Optimistic, aren't they:>?

Advertisers have been promised a circulation of only 100,000; Hollins said fewer than 3 percent of people over age 30 who buy music regularly would have to buy Tracks for the magazine to reach that circulation goal.

Obviously, they aren't considering their future reading public (ie. us) might not want to read about whatever new product they're pushing in between the occasional article.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't we already got one like this in UK, in the shape of Word maggyziney?
