Names under which self-titled abums are known

Classic example: "The Beatles" much better known under the title "White Album". Other albums I can think of "Rollercoaster" for the first Red House Painters, "Bridge" for the second. "Butterfly" for the second House of Love.

Extra points if the title is not connected to the cover art.

Actually I am not sure if this only happens to self-titled albums. Extra Extra points if you can name a non self-titled album which is better known under a different title.

House of Love technically have 5 self titled full-lengths!

The Band (1969) is sometimes called the "brown album".

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The three eponymous Peter Gabriel albums are so commonly referred to by their cover art ("Car", "Scratch" and "Melting Face"), that these designations now appear on the CD label.

As mentioned above, Zeppelin's fourth album has confounded taxonomists for years.

I still have no idea what this album is supposed to be called:

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002GYL.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I don't really care either.

I recently added a few songs from Led Zeppelin's untitled fourth album to iTunes. I didn't know what to write in the "album" field. "Led Zeppelin's untitled fourth album" seemed a bit obtuse, so I just used parantheses and wrote (4th album). I need a life.

The Dylan album "BOB" is often known as "Blonde on Blonde"

The album called "Howlin' Wolf" with the rocking chair on the cover is often called "the rocking chair album."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Peter Gabriel's first three albums are generally known as the "car" album and the "melt" album (not certain what they second one is known as), while the Fourth one is known under its US title "Security".

Re: Pearl Jam "Vs."

That record was originally titled "Five Against One" but they pulled the title at the last minute, and the original packaging for the record had no title, though it was officially named "Vs." All subsequent pressings of the album included the Vs. title.

I bought my copy on tape the day that it came out, and it says "Five Against One" on the tape itself.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Metallica, "Black Album"

Greg, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Just found this to back that up:

An Excerpt from the 1993 Rockline Interview

Caller: I'd like to know the reason...the new album's name was changed from Five Against One to Vs in the last month?

Jeff: Your second question is the question of the week...

Host: And what about the title change?

Eddie: They were writing all these articles, you know. Our band against somebody else's band. What the hell are they talking about? You know, don't try to separate the powers that be. We're all in this together. You know what I think? They should take all those award shows, instead of giving you an award, I think there should be some kind of competition where the bands go up and you have a semi play-off and a play-off and then a super bowl ... a battle of the bands.

Jeff: On the MTV level …

Eddie: One band can actually win and pour champagne over each other and they could be champion band of the world. How ridiculous is that?

Host: They could put you all into divisions and leagues.

Eddie: So, we were being cynical by calling it Vs. Sometimes that doesn't work. U2 is being cynical when they printed dollar bills with their face on it and spewed them out to the audience and they said things like, "Watch more TV," and I think actually some people might be doing that right now. Our thing is watch more radio!

Host: There you go. I'll have my vote for that. And I believe there are actually some cassettes, the initial cassette printings have the original title which is Five Against One and then now the original CD pressings are untitled.

Eddie: And there will be another title before this record is done.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The album called "Howlin' Wolf" with the rocking chair on the cover is often called "the rocking chair album."

Actually, that's the name of the album. "Rockin' Chair," to be more specific.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

David Bowie's eponymous debut album is more popularly known to the record-buying public under three different titles: "Anthony Newley Left These Off a Released-in-Portugal-Only EP", "Scott Walker Wouldn't Touch This With A Ten Foot Pole" and "Wanker Boy Shines in Swinging London, Hustles in the West End".

Kjoerup, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the third VU album has been referred to as "the grey album" by many

when the House of Love butterfly album came out, a few people referred to it as "Fontana".

RE: Howlin' Wolf.

The original "Howlin' Wolf" album (Chess Lp #1469) with the rocking chair on the cover is self-titled. My copy certainly bears no other name. The album was reissued by Vogue Records as "The Rockin' Chair Album."

dylan (dylan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, wow. That's kinda stupid. For some reason I don't like this record as much anymore.

Suede - Nude

For the ten people who care, Bob Mould's untitled record is usually the Hubcap album.

Pole's first three albums have titles ("1", "2" and "3"), but they're often referred as "The Blue Album", "The Red Album" and "The Yellow Album", which is quite easy to understand if you see the covers:

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/dre000/e030/e03059xml4g.jpg http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drd400/d430/d43094vgmu0.jpg http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/dre100/e178/e178787q0c9.jpg

I'm not sure whether anyone calls "R" "The White Album", however...

On that matter, "The White Album" by The Beatles is at least in Finland known as "Valkoinen tupla", which means "The White Double".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I always called the HoL butterfly album "Fontana" - it was reported as that in the NME at the time I think.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ministry's "Kephalexth" is universally called "Psalm 69, The way to succeed and the way to suck eggs"--why is that? There's no hint on the cover or the record.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Royal Trux's third, untitled, album doesn't have an official name that I know of, but you have to call it something to distinguish it from their first, self-titled album. I've come up with the clever "Royal Trux's third album" which seems to be catching on.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the first Royal Trux was "self-titled", while the third was "untitled". That seems to be the shorthand adopted by the "initiates".

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a Mekons album that gets this treatment but I can't think of the assigned name or real name (if there is one).

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the one with the Dr. Frankenstein cover? it's called "Devils Rats and Piggies".
and erroneously untitled is Gene Clark's "White Light".
C.Eddy calls it "Led Zeppelin-Zoso".
i called the Peter Gabriels "Eyes" or "Nails" for whatever reason.

Beta (abeta), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I've come up with the clever "Royal Trux's third album" which seems to be catching on.

Don't most people call it Skulls?

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Suede - Nude

But this was really just a usual misreading, by people who thought that the name of the label was the name of the album. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 20 November 2003 08:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I once heard someone refer to Zep IV as "Runes and Tunes"... a much better unofficial title!

steve, Thursday, 20 November 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

there was a movement to name the second self-titled Throwing Muses album 'Sensuous Flaps', because of the packaging. not sure how that caught on, though.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 20 November 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Midnight Oil's s/t - "Blue Meanie"

Poppy (poppy), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the mekons record in question is "Devils, Rats and Piggies: A special message from the Mekons". i think the cd reissue is called that, but the original LP is untitled (or self-titled).

that one ministry album is called "psalm 69" but i think the actual title is just a bunch of runes and symbols.

j fail (cenotaph), Thursday, 20 November 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but why is it called "Psalm 69"? And how does everyone know? (It's really "Kephalexth" in Greek capitals, whatever that is supposed to mean.)

nestmanso (nestmanso), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i think there's a song on the record by that name, so it's considered the "title track".

j fail (cenotaph), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)
