TS: "Miss You" vs. "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?"

Me say "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?".

Both were obvious attempts by more respected "rock" artists to dip their feet into the disco pool, but I think Rod just made the bigger more contrived splash, and it's hella more fun sounding.

You?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"Miss You" gets the slight edge, but I love "Do Ya.." too. Also see (JBR's?) disco rock thread. I love that kind of stuff. "Call Me"!

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Miss You" by a mile for me. Do Ya Think..." has too many disco derivatives for me.
However, the version of "DYTIS" by Hybrid Kids is awesome.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to see Jagger sing Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? That would be amusing.

But no, Miss You is far superior, for the bassline alone.

old man, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Only one of these songs inspired a remake by N-Trance featuring RICARDO DA FORCE though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Only one of them got remixed by Dr Dre, too.

old man, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

therefore 'Miss You' wins - 'chuchuchch wossa matta witchoo boy'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

both could be by The Rapture

(floats off into weird land)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

only one was remade by the revolting cocks

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

'Miss You' has a harmonia - GAME OVER IN STEVEM WORLD

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll take the Stones for $100, Alex.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Miss You" triumphs for sure, though I agree that "Do You Think I'm Sexy" was overly lambasted at the time. Everyone should check out Jorge Ben's "Taj Majal" for the source of "...Sexy"'s main hook.

dylan (dylan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"taj mahal" is sooooo much better than "do ya think I'm sexy?"

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, and "miss you" pretty easy

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

GAME OVER IN STEVEM WORLD

'stevem world' the videogame would roXoR!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

oh come on, i think rod is getting the short of the stick here!

"miss you" is way fresher to me, too, but then again i've only known about it for about a year now and there's a great remake and even greater remix to keep the excitement up.

"do ya think i'm sexy?" has been a radio staple since as long as i can remember and it keeps on giving!

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

oops

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Miss You" was a quite decent attempt while "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" was as throwaway as the entire disco genre usually was. "Miss You" wins easily.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know anyone who can hear "Do ya think I'm Sexy?" without smirking or mimicing the sound of a damp fart, whereas "Miss You" remains a great song.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

*pfffffffft mist*

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry guys, i still find "Miss You" incredibly boring in comparison to "Da Ya..". Then again, I've been born with something that prevents me from liking 80% of the Rolling Stones. (I'm just now considering picking up the albums up to and including "Let It bleed", and it's still in the consideration stage)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex completely OTM

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

both fun but "Miss You" yeah.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"D'Ya" is indeed funnier though. But hell, Rod is funnier than the Stones.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Going Disco: S&D

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

db, you're all alone here. Would you like a blanket? Some soup, maybe?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Rod Stewart is funnier.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Rod wins hands down. Definitely another candidate for the '78 CDR.

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'm lookin' at it this way... if you were DJing at a nightclub and the dancefloor was picking up, and you ONLY had two choices -- "Miss You" or "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" -- as your next song, which would you choose? I'd rather think "Da Ya" would get more smiles on the dance floor, perhaps ironically, but still more smiles. "Critically" speaking, well OBVIOUSLY Rod's song is easily more contrived in this case, I'll agree with that.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, next thread...

Taking sides: "Infatuation" vs. "Ruthless People".

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"Infatuation"!! Jeff Beck in the house!

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesus H., this is pain. I have a better idea:

"Let's Work" vs. "Love Touch!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

ewwwwwwwwwww!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Now imagine the megamix or bootleg of that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Infatuation" wins by a landslide, but "Love Touch" gets left in the dust.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(You ARE talking about Prince's "Let's Work", right?)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHAHAAHAHA!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"Some Guys Have All The Luck" vs. "She's The Boss"

(hehehehehe)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Still gotta go with Rod on that one. Remember the video with him in that black and white checkerboard room?!

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"Miss You" was never sung by Bob & Ray, so it ranks lower.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Miss You" because a) I like the song, b) it inspired great Pedro Bell artwork on Uncle Jam Wants You.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll have to go for "Miss You"; although I would dearly love to get my hands on a recording of The Ruts + Mensi of the Angelic Upstarts covering "Do You Think I'm Sexy" at the Ruts' Christmas party at The Marquee in 1978, if such a thing exists (which it really should, 'cos that was the night they recorded the version of "Human Punk" that was included on "The Crack" IIRC).

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 20 November 2003 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I like 'em both. "Miss You" for dressing up abandonment/bereavement in a faux-assertive disco strut and for being "Paint It, Black" 12 years older and wiser. "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" for its synth/depersonalisation nods to Bowie's Low.
