whatever happened to the real punk bands? Misfits the Damned TSOL Black Flag? not the MTV pop punks who think they are hardcore when they are really just boy bands who cant dance so they hold instruments and lip sing. Good Charlotte is gay. they used to live 10 minutes from me. Rancid is gay. Sum 41 is gay. Simple Plan is gay. You are not punk because u spike your hair and wear black. Those stupid pants that cross in the back are gay. if you shop at hot topic you are gay, u arnt a non conformist because all the nazi goths shop there in essence you conform to dis conform. Stupid pop punks have ruined the music by replacing politics with love. I wish simple plan would die and everyone who is a fan of these bands would shove a cucumber so far up there ass that there nose bleeds then keil over and die. Lamo. Go dead kennedys. Go misfits. go TSOL go Danzig Go Nerve Agents. ignore your heros. live your life. fuck the system. if you know what im saying E mail me and we can conspire to kill simple plan.

I like your ideas. I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

blah blah blah. come back when you've listened to the Saints.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Misfits and TSOL both did too much damage to their respective good names in the ensuing years to be categorized as "real punk bands" anymore. And call Danzig a punk these days and he just might hit you rather hard in a tender place, resulting in a big, nasty red welt.

Also, decrying non-"real" punk bands as being "gay" is a bit of a misstep, being that real Punk Rock got a foothold in the gay community long before it ever reached a wider audience. Explore some enlightened thinking, Alan

But yes....Good Charlotte, Sum 41 and Simple Plan are plainly indefensible and depressing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck the system!

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

So much for this thread going anywhere coherent.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Alex in NYC the thread narrator?

Johnny Chaos, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha coherent

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Alex in NYC the thread narrator?

No, I just thought an interesting thread about the current state of Punk Rock (or lack thereof) might make for interesting reading, but alas if it's just going to become a magnet for idiocy, I suppose I'll just let loose a sigh of resignation and bore myself to death on yet another thread about the "brilliance" of Jay-Z. YAWN

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It's dead. It ran its course. And now its dead. Dead I tell you. I mean, how many times can you fuck the system through song before it becomes tired?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

punk "won"

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

oops you're right. Whatever happened those bands who REALLY MEANT IT, like Petula Clark, the Count Basie Orchestra and Freddie and the Dreamers?

Hmmm, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Punk lost.

The most punk bands I've seen lately, regardless: Against Me, Halo Perfecto, This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb, Submission Hold, Yaphet Kotto, for those still around.

I mourn Black Masks For Secrecy, Heroin, Swing Kids, Struggle, Palatka, Reversal of Man and Anton Bordman.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

What about The Little Queers?

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard 'em; when/where/what?

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic album: Fucking till Midnight.
They're still going in Portsmouth.

Pete S, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

VIOLENT RAMP is holding down the fort in ann arbor, mi.

at least, i think it was violent ramp... it could have been blancmange or michael hurley.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

And you know what else? The Queers are totally gay!

Also, Alex, I'm all for candid discussions of punk rock, but Jesus, did you ever think this thread had a chance? The original post read like a monkey with a mo-hawk fell over on a type writer.

I could see the logic that both sides of the current PUNK RAWK spectrum, the mall-punk and the MALL PUNK IS GAY DEAD KENNEDIES INVENTED REAL PUNK BACK IN THE 80S are both incredibly stupid, but I think that's been discussed just as much as Jay Z.

David Allen, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, you just made me cream my pants. i lurve ya.

as for the kid, he is clearly angst-ridden. he needs to be introduced to my friend ketamine.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

there are plenty of real punx out there. look under a rock. or in a church basement.they are just hiding until the coast is clear then they iz gonna go steal stuff from the 7-11.

scott seward, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

What's hot topic?

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I poop too much.

Labia, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

hot topic = mall shop selling rebellious sloganwear and wares (ie, anarchy buttons with upc codes)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

thx gygax! never heard of it. And I live near malls.

Lightning Bolt are the best punk rock band there is, I would wager.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

punk = overly complicated pants?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

those are more fallout from the goth/rave-wear.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

oh oh oh! We could combine goth and wave and punk and get GRUNK!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Punk died many years ago. What's amazing is how quickly it died as a movement.
It started out as being about no rules and then it became trendy and turned into something with way too many rules.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Use other cliches please

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still enthralled by alan clark's exhortation to live my life and fuck the system. I've lived within the system for so long that I've really forgotten how to live. I think by fucking this system, I might rediscover my youthful passion. I think this somehow involves listening to Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, but I'm still working out the fine details.
Thank you alan clark for waking me from my dormition.

Christian Rawk (Christian Rawk), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Not only is punk not what it used to be - it never was what it used to be.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"whatever happened to the real punk bands? Misfits the Damned TSOL Black Flag?"

"The Misfits and TSOL both did too much damage to their respective good names in the ensuing years to be categorized as "real punk bands" anymore. And call Danzig a punk these days and he just might hit you rather hard in a tender place, resulting in a big, nasty red welt."

Black Flag split up in 1986 and The Damned are starting a UK tour on 4th December (I'm going to see them at Reading Fez Club on 15th December, hurrah!)

I'm glad we cleared all that up. Now perhaps we can move on to far more important matters, such as: can someone please explain to me how it's possible to have an allegedly "punk" pair of trousers which are very clearly baggy and flared?

Please respond urgently before I stop caring again.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, too late.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

What I want to know is why Alan never mentioned this in any of his diaries in the 80s.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Not only is punk not what it used to be - it never was what it used to be."

Actually, it was once what it used to be. It just used to pretend that it wasn't what it used to be, to try to confuse people.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

bah, true authentic punks of today don't listen to punk - they listen to reggae and ska! (well, the balkan punks at least)

Good Charlotte are awesome. MTV-punk is one of punk's greatest legacies, natch, nowadays it is THE greatest legacy, as opposed to all that suffocating ideology crap that still hangs around ("Stupid pop punks have ruined the music by replacing politics with love", dear oh dear. go make a benefit tape for saving the hedgehogs or something).

Mind Taker, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"true authentic punks of today" is a contradiction in terms.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i know! still, there always is a sure way to recognize a punk apart from a, say, metalhead. it IS just one of the music tribes nowadays. and speaking of ideology, i have respect for the diy/sxe/anarcho/anti-globalist(/crusty!) underground fanzine scene. but i hate "punk ideals" when it means rockism in disguise (ie the opening post of this thread).

Mind Taker, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

These cerebral rock critics will be the death of us.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that a good stage name for one of those hair-dye punk band guys would be "Johnald Pantsathon" or "Rog Vag" (both g's having "J as in Jerry" sound).

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

My band is true punk. Although none of the band members have ever met and we have never played anything. Watch for us not to have a video on MTV real soon.

Oh, right - fuck the system.. cheers.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread was jacked like a mofo. Damn.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe true punks wear t-shirts like this!!!!

http://store6.yimg.com/I/engrish-store_1763_2151224

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

That shirt sums up modern-day mods and their scene perfectly.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

lightning bolt, xiu xiu, and chicks on speed are my favorite modern punk bands.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I saw Beat Happening at Gilman St. in 1989 or so - I was never much of a fan, but at that show they were punk as fuck. I've never seen a band jeered and insulted like that since, and they seemed to revel in it.

Who is Simple Plan?

andy, Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

simple plan means you are a girl who shops for her tough punk at Tower records (ooops, I'm a buyer) and buys her posters and clothes at Hot Topic. Boy, that name sure pops up. Adios and on to another place.

This is my favorite punk band.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Thursday, 20 November 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice photo of the gang. Cosey looks as excited as Grace Slick.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 20 November 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me, or does Peter Christopherson have the largest head in the music industry?

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Thursday, 20 November 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Physically large, Right?

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 20 November 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Have any cool and unseen shots of David Tibet... Mr current313?

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 20 November 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

straight edge is the only real punk.

X -- X

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 20 November 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, his dome is huge.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Thursday, 20 November 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

am I the only one who thinks that Hot Topic is the best thing that could possibly have happened to suburban america? you can walk to the mall down the road, plunk down $100 and end up looking like an Evil Rave Biker!!!!

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 20 November 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Me...my Cubase...and I. That's Steinberg's new punk slogan for adverts. Wait.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Thursday, 20 November 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate to say it, but I really think hot topic is cool. It is so Snowcrash by Neil Stephenson. I love the idea that every from of rebellion has been totally co-opted and sold at a franchise.
