How many discs are in your x-disc changer, and what are they? Under what circumstamces do you hit random and listen to them? Is this even a good way to listen to music?

c'mon whores. currently, on random, i am listening to: Loveless, Psychocandy, Yo La Tengo Painful, Bardo Pond, Set And Setting and Paranoid.

In the 10-disc changer in my car:
Motion Man--Clearing the Field
LTJ Bukem---Logical Progression, disc 2
Kool G Rap--Road to the Riches
Baaba Maal---Live @Royal Festival Hall
Keith Murray--Enigma
Mad Professor and Lee Perry--Dub Take the Voodoo Out of Reggae
Gregory Isaacs--Soon Forward
DJ Krush and Toshinori Kondo--Ki-Oku
Israel Vibration---Strength of My Life

that's only 9. I either only put 9 in, or didn't put the case of the 10th one with the rest of them.
I don't like listening on random cause I'll wind up hearing the same songs repeatedly and miss tracks I want to hear. If I could set it to play through every track--but randomly--I would.

My three 800-disc changers on random constitute the best radio station in the world. Sometimes the machine-generated segues are as prescient as any DJ; frequently I take the players out of shuffle mode upon hearing a particular song and finish out the album. Where else would I hear Samuel Barber into Malicorne into Massive Attack into Muzsikas into Hototgisu, as I did earlier this evening?

I can't so much answer the question because I use my computer to play CDs here, but at home my 100 disc changer (which I got for free!!) was a disaster when i put it on repeat. It would go song I haven't listened to in years for a reason => song from a dj mix that sounds silly out of context => twenty minute ambient track, etc

the only time i do random listening is when i listen to reggae. i like to take one disc apiece from each trojan compilation i own. i also have these virgin france reggae compilations that say "LISTEN ON SHUFFLE" in several different places.

On top of my (single) CD player right now are:
"The Diva Series" Astrud Gilberto
"Anomie and Bonhomie" Scritti Politti
"Street Jams - ElectroFunk (Part 1)" VA
"Kulma" Panasonic
"Fast Asleep" Funki Porcini
"Everything Is Possible" Os Mutantes
"Sunshine Hit Me" The Bees
"Studio One Scorchers" VA
"Songs Of Praise" African Head Charge

I am my own random button. (Though there's no such thing as "true random" this way, as you might be able to see)

Two daisychained 300-changers - I keep a smattering of everything in them and play randomly. And yet, Lou Reed seems to always come on.

I think this is a fun way to listen to stuff sometimes, and I'll pick some incongrous stuff to mix up. The other night I listened to disc one of the TROUBLEMAN MIXTAPE, the Cure's STARING AT THE SEA, a Goblin collection, the Rev. Louis Overstreet and a compilation called INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FROM THE SOUND ARCHIVE (which I got free with the last issue of Songlines). I currently have the Stooges, Magnetic Fields, the Piranhas, Long Fin Killie and a garage/glitch/electro/r&b mix I made and on random.
