what a fucking load of crap. Why are they bothering?

link didn't work (the one from the Source's page, not yours). Still, I'm of two minds. The Soruce really does have some major issues with Eminem being white, and this has a sort of "you said this when you were young! therefore, you are GUILTY!" (Cue Fugazi.) On the other hand, well - I haven't heard the track. But I have no problem with outing somebody who's making lots of profit playing race issues (AND having great flow/lyrics, yes) as somebody who, at one point, may not have perceived matters in as complex a manner as he does (I'd say) now.

Unfortunately, a lot of black rap artists say the same things about black women.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Jazzbo has a point.

Has anybody heard the track? I can't play it at work, or make any of the other links work. I'm curious... can someone paraphrase what he says?

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not so much a problem I have with the Source covering these stories, per se, it's that in the case of this and the 50 Cent cover I have a problem that the magazine now has such an obvious agenda - i.e. outing or doing investigative reports on people that Benzino has public beefs with. It really diminishes the credibility of the publication, whether or not the facts are accurate in and of themselves. Like, I'm sure you could find some dirt on, say, Irv Gotti if you wanted to but they won't do that because Irv is one of Benzino's allies.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Or if you want to be all daring and torch some sacred cows, why not really have balls and do some investigative job on Biggie or Tupac....(Tupac certainly had a lot of contradiction with regard to his thug image and the reality of who he was in real life - probably more so than 50 Cent does).

I’ll get straight to the point
Black girls are bitches, that why I’ma let ya you better pull up ya britches
‘Cause all that cash is making your ass drag
From the boyfriend ya ganked and that’s pretty bad
I mean that’s pretty sad when ya dating a bad guy
And then you turn around and date another big, Black guy
Now that’s pretty wrong, but you’re just ganking
But that’s okay because you need a goddamn spanking
From me, the funky Eminem

So, what exactly does 'ganking' mean?

Mikomcho, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

gank=steal, i believe.

adam west (adamwest), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

He needs to change his name to "The Funky Eminem".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure what he's getting at tho? 'Black girls are bitches', they steal - I guess the thing about dating another black guy means that they're sluts?

All that cash is making your ass drag? Eh.

Mikomcho, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I was under the impression that they'd caught him dropping the N-bomb, but it looks like that's not the case, so I dunno how much controversy this will really raise. sounds like it's more embarrassing in terms of his lyrical abilities at the time than anything else, though.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

In his press conference today, Benzino equated it with Mike Tyson, O.J. Simpson and Kobe Bryant...

spittle, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

MORE at MTV

Some of this doesn't sound so good:

"All the girls I'd like to bone have big butts
No they don't, cause I don't like that nigga shit
I'm just here to make a bigger hit"

"Blacks and whites
they don't mix
but black girls only want your money
'cause they're dumb chicks"

'Both tracks sounded amateurish'

Ha!

Mikomcho, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Free CD with the February issue tho!

Mikomcho, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Benzino just contrives to NOT be taken seriously, doesn't he. 'Sides the mainstream media has had a FIELD DAY with Eminem's ACTUAL criminal activities, the idea that it would need to start pretending that recording a couple of terrible misogynistic/racist songs nearly 10 years ago is equatable with rape/murder is just laughable.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 07:28 (twenty-one years ago)

When we were in Warsaw and met a couple of students we started talking about music, and when we mentioned Eminem they were very disapproving, because they claimed he'd been on MTV saying he wanted to kill all Poles and Jews. My suspicion is he hasn't done any such thing but this thread reminded me so I thought I'd ask.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Benzino's accusations that the media operate on a double standard when it comes to the multiplatinum white MC and that an artist of color could never get away with saying some of the things Em says in his music

That's funny b/c it's almost the exact opposite that's true...if all you knew about hip-hop was what you read in People magazine or saw on Fox News, you would think that the only rapper who has ever made disparaging remarks about women or gays was Eminem...that doesn't make it admirable or anything, but the notion that he's being given a free ride is absolutely ridiculous when Nas drops the word "faggot" like it's a necessary part of speech and "bitch" is the taken-for-granted pseudonymn for all women in 90% of all mainstream rap songs...of course, those are *slight* exaggerations, but it just shows you how hysterical it sounds when Eminem is accused of the same shit.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Call it a hunch, but I'm sure Eminem's manager Paul Rosenberg has vetoed any "kill all Jews" actions on the rapper's part.

Last time I saw Eminem on MTVE he was offering me crackers and ranting about how racist it is that he's gotten the MTVE Best Hip-Hop award for the 5th year in a row. It's easy to get these things mixed up.
