Haven't you heard? It's all about postsubculture now.

Mikomcho, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Subcultures are rarely if ever about music. Fashion or drugs, maybe.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Post-eclecticism backlash! Subcultures return! Is 'trendy lifestyle music' a subculture?

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan,

To what extent could IDM be considered a musical subculture, then? It's not particularly fashionable or drug related, and is frequently criticized for the fanbase also being producers.

Also, was/is bastardpop a musical subculture?

Mikomcho, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

What the hell is bastardpop?

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You know - 'mashups' circa early 2002: like Osymyso, Frenchbloke, Richard X/Girls on Top, Freelance Hellraiser, etc.

None at all. This isn't a culture of any kind. It's a web-based message forum.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, wait... IDM, not ILX!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely, ILX is cultural in the broadest definition of the word tho - but that's beside the point.

Mikomcho, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

mod, rockabilly, punks not dead, and whatever the Romulan-looking indie kids on Capitol Hill call themselves to thread.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Those are all fashion-based, I'd say.

But I'm dropping it, because I smell the corner I'm about to talk myself into, and something is rotten there. Of course all music is fashion to a certain extent.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The youth population of Japan to thread.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

er GOTH!

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

But not all fashion is subcultural.

It all depends on your definitions - this stuff gets endlessly debated. Subcultures will always exist in negotiation with drugs, fashion, and 'mainstream' more generally.

As a concept - I'd say classic, if you want to talk about specific examples though...

In general, a case could be made for the two examples above as existing and resembling subcultures.

Mikomcho, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Based on music, that is.

Mikomcho, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"The youth population of Japan to thread"

Elaborate please.

Debito (Debito), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

So very fashionable.
