Sarah, you just wish you embodied youth rebellion like this chick.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yikes!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

...disturbed, unsettled, aroused...

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

packaged youth rebellion is always better than real youth rebellion.

That picture would have been a greater threat to the bourgeois if you had been wearing more lip gloss.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

actually I like to pretend it's a chocolate gun. Like the one Spencer Tracy has in Adam's Rib. I'd totally buy those.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to post 25 more times in order to break into the ILM top 50 again. Ask me a bunch of questions.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Were you serious about that second-to-last post?

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

If he's not, I am.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

as serious as anybody who goes by the name Nihilist Pop Star can be.

Next question!

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

are you really that surprised that companies are treating children like the superficially rebellious morons that they have every right to believe they are?

And didn't punks have a decade since Green Day to get used to the fact that their fashion sense is easily commodifiable?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

are you really that surprised that companies are treating children like the superficially rebellious morons that they have every right to believe they are?

Being suprised and being delighted are two different emotional experiences.

And didn't punks have a decade since Green Day to get used to the fact that their fashion sense is easily commodifiable?

No silly, it is not 2004 yet.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Why, NPS?

(And Anthony, if they're dumb enough to fall for it, then I'll let 'em.)

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I really want to go to the mall to buy mass-produced vinyl bondage trowers with situationist slogans embroidered on them.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

ok. I'm down with "delighted." Though I'm more excited by how Good Charlotte completely challenges punk aesthetics AND makes great music. Hot Topic only gets part one down.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Well sarah, when you get old and lame like me and you spent your youth thinking about the potential for real economic and social revolution(instead of fucking cute chicks like yer supposed to) and then you realize that the entire 20th century was filled with people who were smarter and more interesting than you are and they couldn't get anything accomplished either, you just become old and jaded and cynical and you become momus witha bad attitude.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony: How does either of them "challenge" punk aesthetics? Both fall into line with a certain conception of them, yes, but I don't see the challenge.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Besides, the cut of your trowsers is way more of a political statement than whatever book you read last night.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

How old is "old"?

Mmm, part of me agrees with that last statement.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Though I'm more excited by how Good Charlotte completely challenges punk aesthetics AND makes great music

GC challenges punk aesthetics like McDonalds challenges the aestheics of cooking a hamburger on the grill in your back yard.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

How old is "old"?

I suggested to Malcolm McLaren that he should check out a band while he was in NYC called The New York Dolls.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, I can totally tell you've listened to the album, NPS. I did.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I am totally at #61. keep the questions coming!

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I suggested to Malcolm McLaren that he should check out a band while he was in NYC called The New York Dolls.

You win.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Does Good Charlotte know that they are challenging punk aesthetics? Are they doing it by accident?

James Morris (HorrayJames), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

AM, it is totally cool that you like GC and you think they are punk.
Writing long piece of pop groups that you put a lot of thought into isn't punk. It isn't even punk to think. I am so punk I am about to have a frontal lobotomy.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

This discussion reminds me of a very old song by Patrick Fitzgerald (?) called 'Come and Get Your Punk at Woolworth's'. Anyone heard it?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

NPS: Did you see the documentary on the Weather Underground? Your statements upthread brought it to mind.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

haha what band who challenged aesthetics successfully DIDN'T do it by accident?

I never said I was punk. I'm new wave.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Sp, I have read a bit about them but I never actually saw the doc. I liked Baader-Meinhof gang more because they were even more pointless and German, AT THE SAME TIME!

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I never said I was punk. I'm new wave

It is good to see that you have matured and are looking at the long term.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I am up to #59. keep the questions coming!

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

And really I am checking out Situationist International at the moment, but they were pointless and French.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm all the way down at #161. Lame. Where and when do you think this whole modern packaging-rebellion (Hot Topic et. al.) thing got started?

The SI were great, by the way.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Blackboard Jungle to thread

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, it's probably earlier than that.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess it depends on when you believe "youth culture" as a market segement began to exist. Frank Sinatra and Justin Timberlake have more in common than you might think.

Or is he a racist?

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "than you might think"

Oh well! I am still getting closer to #50.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

NPS, I will try to get my friend Juan in here. I think he might have some good questions pertaining to your situation. I cannot guarantee anything.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

What is the difference between a nihilist pop star and a non-nihilist pop star? And have you been watching that excellent French documentary about corruption in the CIA?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

colin, is that patrick fitzgerald the guy that did "I've Got A Safety Pin Stuck In My Heart" ?

(also I thought you only liked heavy metal - you lied!!)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes Matt. That's the guy. I protest that I only know the track from radio. It stuck in my head, like a safety pin, haha.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I am now up to #57!

If I was 18 again, I would be much more promiscuous. I would work hard and eat more vegetables. I would be kind and decent to the people around me. I would try and be more like Andy Kellman and write a blog about Theo Parrish. Not just a blog where I would mention that I liked the music of Theo Parrish, but a blog exclusively about Theo Parrish. I would call him in the morning and ask about his breakfast. I would call him after lunch about any unfolding post-breakfast drama. I would call him before bedtime to make sure that his dinner was agreeable and when he thought about the DVD he rented from Blockbuster yesterday. If Theo decided to take a walk I would break out a boom mic and a portable DAT recording and do field recordings of his travels so that posterity could know what his walk sounded like. I would ask him to take Polaroid's of his bowel movements and write a date and time for them. From there I would scan them into my database and you would be able to cross reference his dietary patterns with the size, shape, color, consistency and buoyancy of his stool. You could index when he worked on a particular record and what his pooh was like, then you look at pictures of him watching a DVD from Blockbuster while listening to a streaming MP3 of the field recordings I did outside of his house while he was sleeping last night.

In hindsight I have completely wasted my years. Will you take me under your wing and show me the light Mr. Kellman?

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Fascinating, fascinating post. Thank you.

May I suggest the name of this blog would be 'Theo's Parrish?'

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

What is the difference between a nihilist pop star and a non-nihilist pop star?

I believe in rock and roll and I am trying to keep it as real for the fans as possible. All these other non-nihilst pop stars are just presenting tired gimmicks and are not doing it for The Kids.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I am currently at #56, one more post and I will be tied with Barima for #55!

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

so how old are you Sarah Pedal?

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

You are a nihilist and you believe in the kids? Please explain, as one of our politicians once said when someone asked her if she was xenophobic.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe that the children are our future.

I also believe there is *no* future.

See the paradox? Perhaps now you understand why MTV2 is so fascinated with my new album on Sony.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, how are you combining rock music with electronics Mr. Barrow?

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I am currently stuck at #53, but three more post with rocket me into the top 50.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ack! they WILL rocket me to #50. two more posts to go!

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you have to say about Sony referring to you as "the next Getaway Cruiser," NPS?

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, can the cool postering be kept down to a minimum Malcom McLaren?

Tell me more about bit-music! It sound so kewl

Mikomcho, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a brilliant response NPS. You are clearly possessed by current 313. How am I combining electronics with rock music? I am not, sir. My alter ego is.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually Mr.. Kellman it kind of hurts that my work as been so misunderstood. The concept behind my latest album, Perfectly Pointless and Pointlessly Perfect, was that I was trying to combine the warm fuzzy sing-along angstfests of bands like Dashboard Confessional, Bright Eyes, The Get Up Kids, and Sunny Day Real Estate with the experimental edge of 20th century composers like Edgard Varese, Luigi Nono and Pierre Henry. I realized that the only thing better than the best, is the worst, so I decided to crib my entire album from music that nobody in their right minds would ever want to listen to.

Everyone thought it would be career suicide, since I had earned so much money from ghost writing most of the last two White Stripes albums, but everything turned out all right in the end. I am going to be touring with Celeine Dion and the Rolling Stones this summer as part of the Budweiser Festival of Crappy Music and I am in regular rotation on Much Music.

Everybody knows A&R guys are dipshits, thank god that my boundless musical talent and endless charisma have been able to bring the commercial music industry to it's knees despite poor promotion. I am still very humble and after I retire in 2007 I am going to move to Berlin to help feed homeless Children and smoke crack with Juan at Tresor.

Currently I am working with Jay-Z on tracks for his next album and I am also doing a disco-punk album with Britney Spears in March. She liked the concept but she felt DFA was incompetent, so she hired me to rescue the project from the pro-tools hard drives. The really mashed in up, but with careful editing and heavy post-production I should be able to turn the greatest disaster in the entertainment industry since Waterworld into salable product by April.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you ever eaten emu?

I have never eaten an emu, but I did keep one once as a pet. Unfortunately it was in poor health and I decided to sell it to somebody else who would be able to provide it with the care and nurturing it so desperately needed. I do miss my old pet, and I often consider picking up another.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Waterworld too - what a haircut. the best.

I also love Waterman of SAW fame.

What about crocodile? That's yummy.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

have you ever considered going vegetarian?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem with a crocodile is that it can only make a crocodile sound. One thing people do not realize about emu's is that they can sing back any sound they hear. I would much rather have a happy emu in my studio than a crocodile. Although that does remind me of a funny story about working with Joseph Byrd on the United States Of America album back in 67...

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)
