"Special delivery for Hoops Mcann..."

"Clean this mess up else we'll all wind up in jail -
those test tubes, and the scale,
just get 'em all out of here.
Is there gas in the car? Yes there's gas in the car.
I think the people down the hall know who you are."

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"Tell me, can you dig it, Miss Fugazy?
Now it's gone from 'late' to 'later.'
Frankly, I could use a little face-time
in the service elevator.
And if Dave from Acquisitions wants to get in on the action
with his Handicam in tow -
well, we're going out of business.
Everything must go."

There's one roulade she can't sing"

"Torture is the main attraction -
I don't need that kind of action.
You don't have to dance for me.
I've seen your dance before."

God I love that band so fucking much I can hardly stand it

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Won't you pour me a Cuban breeze Gretchen

I know a fellow with a motor launch for hire
A skinny man with two-one shoes
Cause tonight they're arranging a small reception just for me
Behind the big casino by the sea"

"Will you still have a song to sing,
When the Razor Boy comes and takes your fancy things away,
Wwill you still be singin' it on that cold and windy day?"

Pete S, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Can you show me
The shine of your Japan
The sparkle of your china
Can you show me"

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, Pete S., that "Razor Boy" song used to fuck me up somethin' real proper-like

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"You know that the coming is so close at hand:
you feel all right.
I guess only women in cages can stand
this kind of night.
I guess only women in cages can play down
the things they lose.
You know no tomorrow will come when you lay down;
you can't refuse."

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I like what has happened here.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"Take it in your hand,
all the sirens and the band
get to bendin' my ears.
How was I to know
'bout the warm, soulful secret
you've been keeping for years?
Slow down, I'll tell you when.
I may never walk again."

this gets my vote for most excruciating scenario in an SD song btw

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I hated them so long I don't know if I can change my mind. In the past few years when I've heard them I've kinda... "Hmmm. Quality?" Where should I start?

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"While the poor people sleepin' with the shade on the lock,
All the stars come out at night"

"Show-bizness kids makin' movies of themselves
You know they don't give a fuck about any body else..."

Just realised - Best use of handclaps , this song.

Pete S, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Hunter, I'd start with Countdown to Ecstasy, which is an unorthodox choice - they were still finding their feet - but some of the lyrics are among Fagen's darkest and most cynical. Aja is flawless but has all the jazz excesses that may have put you off, though if you start to feel how the lyric/groove contrast is really super-sick, it'll completely slay you. Hold off on Pretzel Logic and The Royal Scam until you're a full-scale convert, if you do become one. Katy Lied is also a decent starting point.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

oh Pete I think it's "shade on the light"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

If i were you i'd start with 'Can't Buy a Thrill'.

Pete S, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh right...thanks JOhn - but what are the backing singers chanting?

Pete S, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"Everyone's Gone To The Movies" (great song btw) may be about pedophilia....

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks! I've had more than one person tell me to check them since I am pretty into dark and cynical. Smooveness used to bug me. Now I wish I could just take quaaludes and be laidback all the time.

While checking spelling I learned:
"Methaqualone was developed in the 1960s by William H. Rorer, Inc. At that time, the company's best-known product was Maalox, a digestive aid that derived its name from its ingredients, magnesium and aluminum hydroxides. To enhance the product recognition of their new sedative drug, the company incorporated the aa of Maalox into the name Quaalude. The other elements of the name are presumed to be a contraction of the phrase quiet interlude, a soothing, even poetic description of the drug's effect."

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

backup singers on "Show Biz Kids" alternate singing "Las Vegas" and "lost wages"

Start with "Can't Buy a Thrill"? I feel like the other vocalist they used to use might be something easier for die-hard SD fans to digest, though Fagen and Becker are on record as thinking he was the shizz. Great album anyhow, though, yeah.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

a friend and I were just discussing SD last night (she made a mix for me).. one thing we talked about was how superb the verses of "Reelin' in the Years" is.. compared to the crappy ass chorus

nothingleft (nothingleft), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Two Against Nature:

"Bad news breaking in 18A
Missy's kitty turn inside out she say
Spider queen demon and that whole crew
Across the lobby the wicker wing chair flew
All the nice people those goodly souls
Quaking in their respective hidey-holes
Everyone's wasted in this gruesome dream
Not a one of them left to hear you scream"

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's my list of Dan albums, including solo efforts and in rough order of today's preference:

Countdown to Ecstasy
Aja
Pretzel Logic
Katy Lied
Can't Buy a Thrill
Two Against Nature
The Royal Scam
11 Tracks of Wack (Becker--quite good!)
Gaucho
The Nightfly

"Never seen you looking so fine my funky one..." best intro evahh

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"Reeling in the Years" chorus is GREAT but ONLY with the verses intact: it's sarcasm, almost unbearably bitter! in this light its use as a good-time anthem is completley hilarious and does its authors proud

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm always surprised The Royal Scam doesn't get more love....I think it's my favorite, SD at their most paranoid and dark. Besides Charlamagne, it's got the awesomely bitter Sign in Stranger, Don't Take Me Alive, and Haitian Divorce....Also, the title track is kinda big and art rock almost like a lite jazz Achilles Last Stand or something.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'm a bookkeeper's son
I don't want to shoot no one..."

Any SD album hits the "instant summer feeling" vein, but _Aja_ most
of all. Always thrown by friends who say they hate Steely Dan, as
that's such a foreign concept to me.

"I can't cry anymore
While you run around
Break away
Just when it seems so clear
That it's over now
Drink your big black cow
And get out of here"

Chris Hill, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread needs more fagen love:

"Our town is just like any other
Good citizens at work and play
Normal folks doin' business in the normal way
This morning was like any other
Mommies kissing daddies goodbye
Then the milkman screamed
And pointed up at the sky

Chorus:
From Sheilus to the reefs of Kizmar
From Stargate and the Outer Worlds
They're speeding towards our sun
They're on a party run
Here come Tomorrow's Girls
Tomorrow's Girls

You see them on the grass at lunch hour
Soaking up the vertical rays
In their summer dresses
A little smile can really make your day
Their kisses feel like real kisses
And when they cry they cry real tears
But what's left in your arms
When the static clears

Chorus:
They're landing on the Jersey beaches
Their engines make the white sand swirl
The heat is so intense
Earth men have no defense
Against Tomorrow's Girls

In the cool of the evening
In the last light of the triple sun
I wait by the go-tree
When the day's busy work is done
Soon the warm night breezes
Start rolling in off the sea
Yes, at lantern time
That's when you come to me
Come to me

Our home is just like any other
We're grillin' burgers on the back lawn
Some time goes by
We fall asleep with the TV on
I dream about a laughing angel
Then the laugh becomes a furious whine
Look out fellas
It's shredding time

Chorus:
They're mixing with the population
A virus wearing pumps and pearls
Lord help the lonely guys
Hooked by those hungry eyes
Here come Tomorrow's Girls
Tomorrow's Girls

Chorus:
From Sheilus to the reefs of Kizmar
From Stargate and the Outer Worlds
They're speeding towards our sun
They're on a party run
Here come Tomorrow's Girls
Tomorrow's Girls"

Katy Lied is perfect....the Royal Scam is not, but I still love it (alot more than anyone else does, I think) In continuing my Led Zep comparison, I guess Royal Scam is like their Presence and Katy Lied is IV....I think prob. the reason I prefer it is because you don't hear it nearly as much (same goes for Presence, cuz IV is obviously superior in many ways)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Note to self: get the box set

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Jon, was Steely Dan an influence of yours? You and Steve Malkmus (his story type songs like Vanessa from Queens and Jenny and Ess Dog) always strike me as two modern artists with a sorta Steely Dan vibe.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes we're gonna have a wingding
A summer smoker underground
It's just a dugout that my dad built
In case the reds decide to push the button down
We've got provisions and lots of beer
The key word is survival on the new frontier

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Drive west on Sunset to the sea
Turn that jungle music down
Just until we're out of town
This is no one night stand
It's a real occasion
Close your eyes and you'll be there
It's everything they say
The end of a perfect day
Distant lights from across the bay

CAVES OF ALTAMIRA

I recall when I was small
How I spent my days alone
The busy world was not for me
So I went and found my own
I would climb the garden wall
With a candle in my hand
I'd hide inside a hall of rock and sand

On the stone an ancient hand
In a faded yellow-green
Made alive a worldly wonder
Often told but never seen
Now and ever bound to labor
On the sea and in the sky
Every man and beast appeared
A friend as real as I

CHORUS:
Before the fall when they wrote it on the wall
When there wasn't even any Hollywood
They heard the call
And they wrote it on the wall
For you and me we understood

Can it be this sad design
Could be the very same
A wooly man without a face
And a beast without a name
Nothin' here but history
Can you see what has been done
Memory rush over me
Now I step into the sun

"ugly"?

I love 'The Fez'!

Pete S, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

also this isn't ugly, but its prob. my favorite verse of any song ever (although I guess the subject matter - junkies and drug dealers I always assumed - is pretty dark)

Katy tried
I was halfway crucified
I was on the other side
Of no tomorrow
You walked in
And my life began again
Just when I'd spent the last piaster
I could borrow
All night long
We would sing that stupid song
And every word we sang
I knew was true
Are you with me Doctor Wu
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew
Are you crazy are you high
Or just an ordinary guy
Have you done all you can do
Are you with me Doctor

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

that's my all-time favorite SD song I think

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Deacon Blues" = one of the grebtest songs ever. And I first heard it two days ago.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

honest question for the dan fans on this thread. i LOVE pretzel logic and katy lied. both perfect albums in my book (fave songs: "parker's band," "any major dude," "rikki," "doctor wu," "throw back the little ones," "any world that i'm welcome to"). i like but don't love the two that came before 'em (the strange hybrid sound that is steely dan hadn't quite gelled yet) and the two that came after 'em (both a bit too slick). i HATED gaucho, which seemed both cold and tuneless to me, though i haven't listened to it in years so i hardly remember what it actually sounded like.

i haven't heard a note of the two reunion albums and have never particularly been moved to. but i've always wondered: might there be anything in there for a cuz like me? and if so, which one of the two for starters?

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

If Aja and Gaucho seemed over-slick, then I'm not sure if either of the new ones would appeal to you, 'cause they're slick slick slick. BUT. They're also far more playful than either of those records. I think I prefer Everything Must Go, whose title track slays me utterly, but Two Against Nature is loaded with great stuff, esp. the opening track, "Gaslighting Abby" and (for me, though this can be a subject of contention on account of the song ends with a big jam-like instrumental bit), "West of Hollywood."

But I'd re-hear "Countdown to Ecstasy" if I were you, I think the sound-not-quite-gelled quality of it lends it even more menace than comes to it naturally.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I love "Peg" but couldn't get into the rest of "Aja" at all. Also the liner notes were really snippy (i think writen by Fagen and Becker) and suggested that the master tapes to the first two songs on the record are missing and are asking people (in the liner notes!) to track them down. Is this old news? Have they been found yet?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard Everything Much Go, but I'll take Two Against Nature over Aja any day....it's much wierder and compelling. My only problem with the record is sometimes the melodies and chord changes seem so far out on some jazz theory/mazz thing that I think the songs suffer sometimes....the structures sound very complex to my (somewhat ignorant of music theory) ears. Still has alot of great stuff....Janie Runaway is good too.

By the way, did anyone else see the TAXI CAB CONFESSIONS clip starring Fagan and Becker that was posted on their site this year....it was absolutely hilarious and strange and uncomfortable.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that Taxi Cab thing ruled!!

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Aja master tapes thing is an example of Steely Dan's extremely dry sense of humor.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, no, I just double-checked that & it isn't true

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

j0hn and matt: thanks for the advice (and warnings)!

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I was a hater for years, largely because of Aja, which I've come around on a little bit. But the first four records are astounding--apotheoses of the 70s idea of the discrete LP. Both of the new ones have enough moments to keep me happy, and the lyrics play against or justify the slickness better than on Aja. I'd take Two Against Nature over Everything Must Go by a hair, because it's sleazier:

Who's got a friend named Melanie?
Who's not afraid to try new things?
Who gets to spend her birthday in Spain?
Possibly you, Janie Runaway

Of course, all of us are wrong:

I saw the fireworks
I believed that I was dreaming
'Till the neighbors came out screaming
He's a third world man

We'll see behind those bright eyes
By and by
When the sidewalks are safe
For the little guys

I am holding the mystical sphere
It's direct from Lhasa
Where people are rolling in the snow
Far from the world we know

Children we have it right here
It's the light in my eyes
It's perfection and grace
It's the smile on my face
Tonight when I chase the dragon
The water will change to cherry wine
And the silver will turn to gold
Time out of mind

(Gaucho never gets enough love.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

EVERYTHING YOU DID

Where did the bastard run
Is he still around
Now you gotta tell me everything you did baby
I'm gonna get a gun
Shoot the lover down
Are you gonna tell me everything you did baby

Traces are everywhere
In our happy home
Now you better tell me everything you did baby
I jumped out of my easy chair
It was not my own
Now I want to hear about everything you did baby

I never knew you
You were a roller skater
You gonna show me later
Turn up the Eagles the neighbors are listening

You know how people talk
I wonder what they say
I think you better tell me everything you did baby

I never knew you
You were a roller skater
You gonna show me later

You never came to me
When you were so inclined
Yes you could have told me everything you did baby
I know where baby's at
I know your filthy mind
Now you're gonna do me everything you did baby

This bright familiar sun
I guess that i'm the lucky one
Who wrote that tired sea song
Set on this peaceful shore
You think you've heard this one before

Well the danger on the rocks is surely past
Still i remain tied to the mast
Could it be that i have found my home at last
Home at last

She serves the smooth retsina
She keeps me safe and warm
It's just the calm before the storm
Call in my reservation
So long hey thanks my friend
I guess i'll try my luck again

I would love to tour the Southland
In a travelling minstrel show
Yes I'd love to tour the Southland
In a traveling minstrel show
Yes I'm dying to be a star and make them laugh
Sound just like a record on the phonograph
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
I have never met Napoleon
But I plan to find the time
'Cause he looks so fine upon that hill
They tell me he was lonely, he's lonely still
Those days are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

I stepped up on the platform
The man gave me the news
He said, You must be joking son
Where did you get those shoes?
Where did you get those shoes?

Well, I've seen 'em on the TV, the movie show
They say the times are changing but I just don't know
These things are gone forever
Over a long time ago, oh yeah

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, that Pitchfork review made me realize that, like, Steely Dan are totally NOT punk rock. I hate them now. They're sell outs.

I always thought the slickness was the point, the dichotomy of the bizarro dark beatnik poetry lyrics snuck into gorgeous melodies and elevator jazz.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

But I don't think the sound of Steely Dan's records is meant to be taken ironically. Certainly, the polish contrasts with the sometimes-dark lyrics (it's reductive, though, to say that irony and darkness are their m.o.--there's genuine romanticism at work, too), but I'm pretty sure their efforts in search of the perfect drum sound or the snazziest horn arrangement were meant in earnest. I've been bugged by lots of pop-jazz that has taken cues from "Aja" and "Gaucho," but I've never thought the Steely Dan records sounded cold or souless. The new ones are a bit digital for my tastes, but still sufficiently warm.

I've spent a bit of time playing their songs on the piano, and haven't found the chord changes to be overly fussy. I can't sing them, though--that guy sings realy high.

dylan (dylan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I wholeheartedly encourage the most ardent SD heads appearing on this thread to go out and pick up Enantiodromia by Azita Youssefi (ex-Scissors Girls) on Drag City.

The degree to which this record is informed by Pretzel Logic-era Steely Dan is hard for me to convey here and now. But in terms of mood, tone and dynamics, it's a dead-ringer. Cryptic lyrics frame scenes, but the listener is allowed to provide many details. The first three tracks are amazing. There's some dud on side 2, but for the most part, this is a great record that has helped sate a Steely Dan jones fueled in large part (lately) by some great posts about the band I've discovered in these parts.

dylan, you're right, I didn't mean to suggest that Steely Dan meant this as some kind of elaborate conceptual joke or anything. I just meant that's one of the things I respond to....the sometime dark and strange lyrics vs. smooth arrangement thing.....I think they are brilliant musicians and songwriters and are obviously obsessively devoted to creating super high quality recordings.

As far as when I said the new albums seemed to "complex" I'm probably just misspeaking because I don't really know theory or play piano. I guess there was just something about the melodies that didn't seem as singable or pop catchy as the old stuff.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the new records having fewer memorable melodies than the old ones. I wonder if that's not because Fagen's voice is going. Maybe their writing melodies to suit his limited range. (Speaking of his singing, I foolishly bought a bootleg of some late-'60s Fagen-Becker demos, and it's clear why the record-label potentates wanted them to hire a pro for "Can't Buy a Thrill.")

Some of the songs are hard to play, at least for a hack such as myself. I just meant that I don't find them to be ostentatious.

I'm also a pretty big fan of the crossroads linking Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs, such as Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do for Love"

I could be wrong but I have seen your face before

You owed him money but you gave him something more
