Do you mean Chicken Lips? I'd been wondering about that and am anxious to hear it.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Doh, yeah. It's really good. Lovely dubby disco.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

dj rupture gold teeth thief

let me hear more mixes produced on computers. the allowed detail is fresh!

asfdzxc (asfdzxc), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

jacques lu cont - fabric 9
david guetta - fuck me i'm famous
crydamoure, vol. 2 <--- mixed on a computer
gus gus - mixed live
disco d - a night at the booty bar

i'm with you guys on villalobos.

one thing that's made me upset this year has been the lack of good techno comps. no dj hell, no dave clarke - probably because they've been getting their albums together. but no globus mix? no sven vath mix? so in the spirit of brinkmann's "urus martan" mix i'd like to nominate:

chester beatty - a shot of love (tresor)

seventy minutes of mixed tracks from "chester beatty". apparently a man and a woman from japan. in the words of a "Mr. Fonktrain" from discogs, it's "Filtered disco loops together with lots of breaks, effects and bass drops at hard&banging 140 bpm... that's how I like techno!" i am inclined to agree.

DJ Andy Smith, dancefloorkillers.com, How To Kill The DJ
Unabombers - Electric Soul

Please tell me more about these.

bugged out, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

dancefloorkillers.com is straight up banging french techno. track titles like "doomplanet", "deadzone" and "effect hypnotique" pretty much get across the vibe. the better parts mix saunderson/acardipane style hoover bass with lazer-sharp acid and the frisky hihat programming of, say, david caretta or johannes heil. there's some vitalic tracks on there that are nowhere near as good as the poney ep tracks. the worst parts are kind of a mess. in fact the last 20 minutes are just total overload, like being stuck in the red light district with a strobe flashing in your face when you just want to go home because you have a headache. i give it a 7/10 (9/10 if i'm working out).

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I was thinking that was something by Andy Smith, whose Document mix I liked from a few years ago... but that doesn't sound like him, so I guess those three are all different things.

bugged out, Wednesday, 19 November 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"electric soul" isn't andy smith either. i really liked when i bought but i haven't listened to since. it starts off with a very relaxed nu-soul vibe, if you like dwele AND victor duplaix you'll probably dig the first half very much. from there it moves into spacey contemporary disco tracks in a stringy philadelphia style. if you like the idea of hearing creative source or maze reinterpreted by faze action (none of those artists are present) then you'll also like the second half.

i think on the whole it shoots for a british take on the theo parrish vibe but misses the mark in some undefinable way. i still liked it: 8.5/10.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

anybody got that Jammer mix on slsk?

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

chicken legs

haha! brilliant!

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike Ratford's list is very close to mine

But the 4 Hero "Life:Styles" one would be in my top 10. Also perhaps the Herbalizer's "Herbal Blend"

(in place of FC Kahuna and Unabombers which I've not heard).

Jeff W (zebedee), Thursday, 20 November 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw the french disco '03 cd behind the counter of a little boutique i shop at. for two seconds i considered snatching it. i'm not going to say i'm proud.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 November 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

hollertronix: never scared

dan meyerson, Thursday, 20 November 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The FC Kahuna mix is actually very good, exceptionally good in fact.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I was thinking that was something by Andy Smith, whose Document mix I liked from a few years ago...

That's the chap. The Document II quietly slipped out a few months ago, pretty much more of the same so if you liked the first one then you'll like the new one. Any mix that starts with Kate Bush's "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" has got something going for it.

Mike (mratford), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i really like smallville, don't think i've heard any other mixes from this year yet...

robin (robin), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i am surprised to see votes for life:styles. i saw horrible, horrible reviews (1-2 stars in most dance magazines). also i'm sick to death of comps in the "disc one unmixed, disc two mixed" format(drum and bass comps do this alot - why?).

i think the track selection is very classy, though a few of the tracks are a little overcompiled at this point.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 20 November 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the mixed/unmixed format a great deal, especially when the tracks aren't widely available on disc. Take the Dmitri from Paris Disco Forever -- that had Barely Breaking Even by Universal Robot Band on it; at the time, the only other place you could get it on CD was on one of the more ropey Mastercuts comps. (I'm not one of those people who's satisfied with having a song if it's simply within a mix. I put my own CDRs together all the time and like to have each song in full.)

Not too many of the tracks on Life: Styles are all that widespread, are they? The most popular one on there is the Syreeta tune, and it's not as if it's I Will Survive or Good Times. I'm not surprised it got low grades, though. Not too many people have an ear for mid '70s-to-early '80s jazz-funk/funk/R&B. Gary Bartz -- I've literally seen people gag when hearing some of his stuff. I love him. (I do kinda wonder why that set came in the mixed/unmixed format. It's not like there are any monster two-minute blends on the mixed disc.)

Both of the Chicken Lips mixes are a lot of fun. I prefer the Body Music one 'cause it's less bumpy (DJ Kicks gets quite selector-style) and it's got Feels Good, Bad Times, and a bunch of Environ shit.

The Bugz in the Attic mix smashes Dego's Selector Series in almost every aspect, but if you're into broken beat it has its share of goodness. Not a great place to start with it, though.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 20 November 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't sleep on the Areal label mix, either. DJ Jan Eric Kaiser's "Bis Neun" is probably my #1 fave. As far as techno goes, the Cocoon mixes have been of the triz-ack. The rare groove stuff on the 4Hero Life:Styles jams. And the badmeaninggood from Roots Manuva was the best of that ilk. It had mirror in the bathroom on it, for chrissake.

I'll probably wet my pants over the mayer mix. HAVE NOT HEARD IT YET WHAT IS MY PROBLEM. Seeing him next tuesday in NYC, though!

And oh the female pressure 2CD mix is hot also. I think I like the Acid Maria side best. RRR Friends is quite nasty and I'm also feeling the Serie Noire 2 comp on news.be but there are many others. Sheesh.

david day (winslow), Friday, 21 November 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Both of the Chicken Lips mixes are a lot of fun. I prefer the Body Music one

I haven't heard Body Music yet (will soon, I expect), but it looks like it's all new stuff, yes? I like the way they blend in a few new tracks on the DJ Kicks mix, but it's the old ones that really shine--fantastic Larry Levan mix of Gwen Guthrie and that amazing Raincoats thing that sounds like Paradise Garage meets French pop or something being my two favorites.

I generally prefer "selector style," too--changeups usually have a bigger effect than smooth blends. See: the Kanye West mix, too.

And yes, the Jammer mix can be found on Soulseek.

bugged out, Friday, 21 November 2003 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i have listened to the chicken lips dj kicks mix three times at work today!! it is very very cool. there two songs, though, that i have to skip (one is nena and the other george duke - and i like duke!). yeah the mixing is weak but i think it's more about the seamless mood of the selections. somehow the herbert remix and the carl craig remix fit in perfectly - you hardly even notice that any of the material is new. with the playgroup mix i had a hard time convincing people the vintage tracks weren't contemporary - this is almost the opposite situation. it's cool.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

andy - i think the most popular is surely "Les Fleur"? i've also heard the sly track a million times, and the weldon irvine and herbie ... this might just because i hang out with people who are fools for rare groove. i don't mean to bash the selection, it's very tight.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the only mix cd which i haven't seen mentioned here and have been really into is jon carter's mixmag one from a few months ago, which i can't believe hasn't had more mentions here; ok so they're all pretty obvious tracks, but there are times where you just want to hear an hour of big hits.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 21 November 2003 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't listen to many of these but I thoroughly enjoyed the Unthugged one that I heard at a party the other week, especially as it had Whistle on it

chris (chris), Friday, 21 November 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

lack of good techno comps

Sven Väth has done a mix CD this year "The Sound Of The Fourth Season", which is excellent, and the Pascal FEOS "Rise & Fall" mix (also on Cocoon) is also fantastic. And I haven't heard all of them, but the new mixes by Villalobos, Cox, Garnier, Joel Mull, Technasia and Laidback Luke all look very good.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 21 November 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Disco D, Cutlass Supreme, Soundmurderer and Yoda & Greenpeace. If that Technasia one you mentioned is the one that came out last month (I think) then that as well, it's an object lesson in how to fucking rock it.

If Aphex's set at ATP was commercially released that would be up there also.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 21 November 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Cutlass Supreme

tell

gaz (gaz), Friday, 21 November 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i was relistening to Miss Kittin's Radio Caroline last night. it has a 2002 date on it but I think it actually came out in UK in '03. anyway, i like it more and more each time i hear it.

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Andy otm about the Derrick Carter mix, can't stop listening to that.

I remember seeing the Jon Carter mix on the mag Toby, but I didn't buy it. It's weird that it's so full of hits cos anytime I've seen him recently he just plays boring tribal stuff, he was my favourite DJ once though.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

siegbran - thanks for the heads up on the new cocoon comps. i hadn't seen any press or copies so i assumed they'd abandoned the sound of the nth season series.

i've tried madly to find the technasia mixes, the last thing i managed to get ahold of was the "future mix". they really take the octave one style new places, don't they?

the laidback luke mix and the garnier box (3 mixed cds!) look wicked but they'll probably never make it to the left coast :(

vahid (vahid), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

So is the Derrick Carter his own stuff, or other people's?

bugged out, Friday, 21 November 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Other people's, it's a retrospective type thing I guess, lots of classics which you could call obvious for Derrick Carter, but not obvious in any other sense.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

How quickly we forget!

va - Le Future Le Funk (Hooj)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

And the second Waves mix!

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

So true, I can't even remember the singles I liked from January to May, let alone the mixes!

Felix Da Housecat-Bugged Out was something of a disappointment, it's good but it should be springing to mind and well, it didn't.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I also like New Order's 'Back to Mine'.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with Andy about wanting unmixed versions of songs, it really irks me in some ways cos I don't have decks and often mixes are the best way to get a few good tracks. I'm on a 56k modem so downloads aren't always convenient.

Even if dance music is made to be mixed lots of tracks have nice intros and outros, and also it's nice to have a full 8 minutes of something if it's great.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

re smallville - it's got a tune on it called MANDATE MY ASS. how can it not be good?? but in all seriousness, the tune selection and mixing on it are also completely flawless and loose.

disco stu (disco stu), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Villalobos by a mile. The momentum of beats carried through the mix is ridiculously great.

I've been a little let down by both Michael Mayer mixes this year. They're okay, but I hear nothing to warrant of all the raves here, or his Mr. Kompakt stature.

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 23 November 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i really like that mandate my ass track

robin (robin), Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Best mix of older music (Metro Area excepted): Serie Noire: Dark Pop and New Beat. I guess it came out in late 2002 - too late to make it onto any lists.

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that the Glimmer Twins? I'm dying to hear that/see them DJ.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 23 November 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

It seems my 'Freelance Hellraiser 2: Hellbound' crack on the Jaxx thread (about non-Kish Kash playing DJs sucking) wasn't without psychic merit. His cut-n-paste job on the new Mixmag CD (top 50 tunes of the year, riiiiighhhhtt) features no Jaxx whatsoever but has his Xtina remix, which is completely Jaxx-inferior! Worse, I forced my self to buy Mixmag cause I couldn't live with the guilt of stealing the CD.

Barima (Barima), Sunday, 23 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

That's right, Ronan. I only have a CDR of it, so I had to look it up online. Turns out there's already a Serie Noire 2 on Eskimo.

Curt (cgould), Sunday, 23 November 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I just got Serie Noire 2 for review but I haven't listened to it yet. It's got quite a bit of acid house on it though.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Monday, 24 November 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

RONG.

Gaz - Cutlass Supreme came out a couple of months ago on Novamute and is an excellent and unfussy mashup of all yr fave ghetto-tech people, a couple of things from him and Debasser, plus the odd bit of jungle and breaks (Si Begg, people like that). If you don't have any silly ideas about the 'purism' of ghetto tech/booty/whatever, it's quality.
