Numbers ||| C/D?

Forgive if there's been a thread for this before. After seeing my search query return 10,000 threads on God being found in Pi, I gave up on trying to find one. Maybe there's a "Numbers C/D?" thread in Pi.

Anyhow, Numbers. The band. Classic or Dud?

My own opinion: as a band goes, classic. Retro-whatever and Pitchfork posturing aside, they have really tight enjoyable songs. Nice stage presence and fun atmosphere. I enjoy them. Classic.

Fun but highly overrated. I kinda prefer Flin Flon or Cripples as far as jerky rock w/ synths go. Very good folks, though.

dud to pitchfork's review of numbers' "death". it's a much better album if you remember to listen to caro's "intercom" or gd luxxe's "prison life". also kid606 needs to be more accessible, not less.

I thought this thread was going to be about the bible!

"Numbers" is fun to listen to, but no great shakes. Not as fun as eating food to survive, however, and that's why I'm putting it up on Ebay this week.

sorry, meant "Life".

It's not nearly as bad as the "Life" (as Ott dubs it) review. And you have to give Bowers some due for mentioning how Ott's review is so self-aggrandizing and focuses on the album's context and not the album itself. But the level of (ingenuine?) enthusiasm comes across (to me) as a half-handed attempt at leaving the true meaning of the review open to either positive or negative (and thus 'ironic' and 'sarcastic') interpretation. Either way, Pitchfork reviews = dud. Pick a side on the album.

did i stutter?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

mentally. your statement really doesn't say much about the music or why you don't like them other than the context they are in, which is not wholly under their control. either way, it's as valid as saying "classic" or "dud."

I thought some of the guys just moved to SF from Madison (when they were called Xerobot or something similar) and just wanted to do something similar. hipster bait, though? Maybe this is just an SF thing i'm not seeing? cuz their shows in Seattle are always quite fun and get a good variety of peeps (i.e. not all hipsters) to show up.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Granted, I would call, say, Pretty Girls Makes Graves hipster bait in a flash, which may not be the case outside Seattle... so I kinda see gygax!'s point...ur, maybe.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought hipsters were their own bait?

All their songs sound the same in a way that I usually like but for some reason with them I don't

four weeks pass...
Dynasty (the drummer's other band) are better, at least live.

two years pass...
whoa. this is a great live band.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 2 March 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

_Life_, the split single and the _Ee-Uh_ EP are classic. Wicked fun - jerky rock with blurpy synths and buried female vocals. But they started out in a very specific corner and when they moved towards even more noise territory I lost interest.
