Today, I really like "Running Back", but normally I'd pick "Fight Or Fall".

You can also use this thread to recommend me more Lizzy, as I only have Jailbreak. I like the sad ones and the sentimental ones. Oh, and the rock ones. I love it all!

"Running Back" has been my favorite song for about a week.

hstencil, Thursday, 20 November 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yay!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 November 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

then buy them all! no, really. all of them.

scott seward, Thursday, 20 November 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Starting with...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 November 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

...Are there any whose cover art even matches "Jailbreak"?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 November 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna go with "Cowboy Song."

dylan (dylan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm partial to the first three records, when they were a trio with guitarist Eric Bell. The music feels a lot more affecting to me, more space, more overt folk moves. But all of their records up through Bad Reputation are well-loved by me.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 20 November 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm currently quite fond of "romeo and the lonely girl."

"the warrior"

operation extreme freedom, Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd say I'm disappointed this isn't about AC/DC, but I really haven't heard much Thin Lizzy so that wouldn't be fair. Plus '74 Jailbreak is the only Bon Scott U.S.-available material I don't own (But the title track's video is TERRIF!!!!)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a video for ac/dc's "jailbreak"? wow i wanna see that!!

duane, Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the ONLY Bon Scott-era video I've ever seen on VH1 Classic. It's fucking amazing. They're basically all stand on piles of garbage and dirt. Malcolm and the bassist are dressed like jail guards, Angus is in a black and white beach outfit and Bon is in a denim outfit with his shirt open. The funny thing is how they basically don't anything more than tap their feet and nod their heads (ok Scott makes a lot of hand gestures) and yet it's more exciting than any duckwalk-stomparound from the later years.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 20 November 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

gotta represent for cowboy song too, actually that's the only reason why i bought this lp, because we were learning to play it

ron (ron), Thursday, 20 November 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Another vote for "Running Back" here, though I have to say that nothing beats putting this platter on and hearing the opening blast of the title track. Always knocks me out.

dj666 (damion666), Thursday, 20 November 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I vote with my kids:
"Jailbreak" is the greatest song
probably ever.

"Boys Are Back in Town"
has survived Bon Jovi's versh,
but "Jailbreak" still rules

Phil was no dummy:
put the best song first, each side
just like Motown did

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 20 November 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, other Lizzy:
Johnny the Fox is real dope,
as is Roisin Dubh*

*spelling way off perhaps, I didn't check, just being half-Irish doesn't give me a good memory for this stuff

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 20 November 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Jailbreak has my favorite Thin Lizzy songs, but Black Rose is my favorite album. And the earlier ones are all worthwhile if you like the later ones...

ara, Thursday, 20 November 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Their first one is badassss...
all over the map. rockers, proto-prog, and some of it kinda sounds like Van Morrison. In a good way.

Will (will), Thursday, 20 November 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I always liked "Angel From the Coast". A solid LP through and through. "The Boys are Back in Town" is a killer that I never get tired of.

David Gates of Delirium, Thursday, 20 November 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"Bad Reputation" is a classic, but with Visconti producing, how could it not be? for classic slow jams, it has "Dancing in the Moonlight" and "Dear Lord".

Beta (abeta), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Once "The Boys Are Back In Town", always "The Boys Are Back In Town"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Cowboy Song" is so incredible

burr so icey to me (some dude), Thursday, 26 November 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I can't front on Cowboy Song either I got my preferences but seriously what an amazing band. work-related story I've probably told before, first time I went to Dublin I played at a club where the soundman is the guy who got all Thin Lizzy's road equipment after PL died & I got to play through a PA stamped THIN LIZZY TOUR 1976 and I was freaking out. started my soundcheck with like 3 chords of "Dancing in the Moonlight," not really recognizable as such because I am a terrible guitarist & wasn't singing the lyric, just strumming the chords nervously, and immediately dude walks up and says "you'll make a lot of friends around here playing that song."

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Thursday, 26 November 2009 03:32 (sixteen years ago)

that's so awesome -- "Moonlight" was on the playlist at my wedding (as was "Boys")

For the last six months I just cannot get enough of "Emerald." It is just so massive - that instrumental chorus! - and I want it to go on forever. I imagine them just jamming it for twenty minutes and no one getting close to tired of it. I've made it past 30 minutes of straight repeats but eventually life had to start up again. So good.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 26 November 2009 04:22 (sixteen years ago)

played "waiting for an alibi" on my radio show tonight. no it's not on this record.

also not on this record - but awesome: Honesty is No Excuse from the first record...

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

I really like the Eric Bell stuff. Think I'm going to slowly complete my set of the remasters. Still lacking Black Rose, the 1st 2 4-piece lps and a couple of others.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 26 June 2012 22:47 (thirteen years ago)

Should have said something between Bell and the later stuff sorry, misspaced that.
1st lp & 3rd especially good, 2nd not bad.

4 piece I wasn't familiar with until the remasters. Commonly thought of as classic line-up were great, does that continue to Black Rose or was scottish geezer gone by then. Replaced by Gary Moore who had been in in shortly before the classic line-up.
John (du) Cann of Andromeda/Atomic Rooster/hard stuff sat in for one tour that there's at least one recording from in '74 too.

Was just listening to this a couple days ago. Was struck by how Springsteeny a lot of it was; I’m intrigued & about 1/2 convinced by the PF reviewer’s assertion that both Phil & Bruce were drawing from Van Morrison instead.

Good review, thanks for pointing it out! (Although it spends precious little time on anything but the couple biggest songs on the album, odd for a 9.1 review, no?)

I hadn't thought of that but it makes perfect sense and partly explains why I don't get Thin Lizzy at all.

i like that the review spent some time on “fight or fail,” a song I’ve always loved, and gave it some shading that i hadn’t thought considered

My memory is hazy on this, but I think when I first the Boss' "Spirit In The Night" on classic-rock radio ages ago I thought it might be Thin Lizzy--lots of Van-isms along with the Dylan moves on Greetings From Asbury Park and The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle
