Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 20 November 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Instamatik – Jahn Teigen"

Wasn't he the guy who represented Norway in the Eurovision Somg Contest on 2 or 3 occasions and got "Nul Points" every time, or something like that?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"Cattle & Cane" is a great choice. Stuff that I didn't know to exist as a 45 or 12" was punished out of ignorance and haste. "8th Wonder" is another one I would have included. "Rockin' It" was represented.

dylan (dylan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"Out of Work," Gary U.S. Bonds -- just a personal fave

Nice list, Dylan. "Early Morning" though? Was "Burn Rubber" '82? I've always liked it better than YDABOM, maybe just because it's played less.

I like how you guiltily sneak Joe Jackson in at #50.

Now go play with your child!

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 20 November 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Burn Rubber" '81. I've always loved "Early in the Morning." Charlie Wilson, of course, is the most influential R&B singer of the '80s. "Out of Work" is a good choice, perhaps I thought "Money's Too Tight..." could represent the '82 economy. "This Little Girl of Mine" would be in my '81 Top 10.

"Billie Jean," present events notwithstanding, would be my #2 if I permitted it as an '82 entry. I'm pretty sure I first heard it around Christmas of '82, but since it didn't really make its presence felt until early '83, I decided to save it for another pointless project.

My kid is listening to old Michael McDonald records, so he should be fine.

dylan (dylan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think "Billie Jean" didn't chart till '83--wish I had my Complete Billboard Pop Charts of the 80s book with me. Actually, I always wish I had that book with me.

Present events are definitely notwithstanding. Then again, I like "Invincible."

Yay "This Little Girl"!

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 20 November 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I looked it up, and you're right: "Billie Jean" didn't chart until 1/22/83. My Christmas memory is probably as false as the one involving a Twister game with the famous Tuttle sisters of Idaho Falls, Idaho.

dylan (dylan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't he the guy who represented Norway in the Eurovision Somg Contest on 2 or 3 occasions and got "Nul Points" every time, or something like that?

He represented Norway three times, but only the first time around he got nul points. He ended up around the middle the next two times.

However, his Eurovision entries are far from classics, but "Instamatik" was a great synthpop pastiche :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 20 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think "Billie Jean" didn't chart till '83--wish I had my Complete Billboard Pop Charts of the 80s book with me. Actually, I always wish I had that book with me.

That is true. It wasn't a single until 1983. My lists are always of tracks rather than singles though (mainly a result of my being a fan of 70s prog), and as such, it belongs in 1982.

"Thriller", also on my list, wasn't a single until 1984, I think.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 20 November 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

no 'cattle & cane'? = no dice

oh, yeah, I'm wiv ya on that, Jim.

OCP (OCP), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"[Jahn Teigen] represented Norway three times, but only the first time around he got nul points. He ended up around the middle the next two times."

Now what sort of country would be dumb enough to let someone represent them at Eurovision a second time when they hadn't brought home the bacon the first time, eh?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 21 November 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Lotsa great songs up above, no doubt about it. I would, however, also like to put in a good word here for Boney M, Charlene, John Cougar, the Fall, Girlschool, Ray Parker Jr., Trouble Funk, and Two Man Sound.

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Not to mention Stacy Lattisaw, Flipper, Captain Sensible, the Anti Nowhere League, Emily XYZ, Joe Piscopo, Treacherous Three, the Dangerous Birds, Althia and the Donazz, Zapp, and Imagination.

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, Ray Parker Jr's already up there! (The right song, too --sorry) As may be some of those other people. But possibly not Tony Basil.

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Do I Do" so runs circles around either "That Girl" and (especially) "Ebony & Ivory" it's ridiculous.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, Zapp are up there too, ulp! (I was thinking "Dance Floor," though.)

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"Stacy Lattisaw, Flipper, Captain Sensible, the Anti Nowhere League, Emily XYZ, Joe Piscopo, Treacherous Three, the Dangerous Birds, Althia and the Donazz"

Somebody's been cribbing from xgau.com, eh Chuck?

(Not a dis--just outing myself as a superdork by recognizing that list!)

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"8th Wonder" is '80, not '82

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

>Somebody's been cribbing from xgau.com, eh Chuck?<

Yeah, you caught me, but that's when he had GREAT singles lists. I wound up buying every one of those, and he was right about all of them. (There are others on his '82 list that were less good, though.)

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I know, soon as I was able to download stuff, I went back through his early 80s singles lists. The A-N League and Treacherous Three songs are great, so's "If You Want My Love."

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I really wish I'd been able to d/l those lists in full. :-(

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

> I wound up buying every one of those<

Actually, that was a lie -- "Who Shot Sadat" by Emily XYZ and "Uptown Top Ranking" (possbily my favorite reggae single in human history) by Althia and the Donazz Frank Kogan taped for me, years later. And Treacherous Three actually put out a six-song album called *Whip It* in Europe (on Sugarhill, though) while I was in the Army; I've never seen it mentioned in print anywhere, so I think it never came out here. It's got all their early singles except for that superfast "New Rap Language" one they did with Spoonie Gee (which I bought as a 12-inch around the same time, and I'm happy to brag that I still own.)

chuck, Friday, 21 November 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't "New Rap Language" a b-side? In any case, it's incredible. Is there a Spoonie best-of anywhere?

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I have it as a B-side of Spoonie's "Love Rap," but I thought that might have just been a European thing. I figured it was a separate single here, but maybe I'm wrong. I don't know of any Spoonie best-of, come to think of it. He did put out a great album called *The Godfather of Rap* in 1987, but it lacked his even greater early hits.

four years pass...

After much 1982 music eluded me for so long, this is now my favorite music year of the moment. I did some researching/downloading, and my god this year was fantastic. I may write-up my own top 50 sometime soon. I was born in '80 and this was just before I was old enough to ask my family to buy me records, unfortunately.
