November 20, 2003

It's time to get the rumour mill spinning again, because it doesn't get much bigger than this.

According to Andrew at MelodicRock.com, Van Halen will return in 2004, with Sammy Hagar on lead vocals.

According to the MelodicRock.com report:

  • Sammy Hagar is set to return to Van Halen
  • A reunion attempt was made with David Lee Roth (after the failed attempts in 1996 and 2000) but it didn't work out
  • Nobody knows who called who first
  • Hagar has told the members of his solo band he intends to rejoin Van Halen

To add to the speculation, HITS Daily Double reported yesterday in their rumour mill that Van Halen had hired Irving Azoff as their new manager. Azoff is probably best known for managing the Eagles. He also, coincidentally (or not), manages Sammy Hagar.

Please remember that this is all rumour at the moment. However, it's a very strong rumour and once it spreads to the mainstream media it will be very difficult for all parties not to at least offer a comment.

Hopefully I'll have more details over the next few days!

Y'know, I don't care what anybody says, I'll always consider Gary Cherone the TRUE Van Halen singer.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 20 November 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Van Halen will return in 2004, with Sammy Hagar on lead vocals.

I'm already counting the seconds in anticipation of ignoring all chances to see this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 November 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

van halen != van hagar

pete from the street, Thursday, 20 November 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they should scrap all of the David/Sammy bullshit and get someone with an Iggy Pop voice. (Imagining Iggy singing "Dance the Night Away")

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 20 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

EVH has said that, after Roth left the first time, they'd entertained the thought of making an all guest-vocalist album before they met Hagar.

Subthread: Who else besides Iggy Pop might do a good job on a VH track?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 20 November 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Thom Yorke? Just for the heart attacks.

Tiny Tim, if he were still alive.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Thursday, 20 November 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Waits -- he'd sound particularly good doing the spoken interlude in "Panama".

pete from the street OTM. Van Halen != Van Hagar.

Eddie's the best guitarist of all time. I would love to see him play if he still has the fire in him. But not if it means suffering through 2 hours of the Red Rocker.

calstars (calstars), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember seeing a short tv interview with EVH a few years ago during the whole second Roth split thing. He looked old and crotchety.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

He looked old and crotchety.

Ed'll really look old and crotchety once doctors get to dissecting
his tongue regularly because of the oropharyngeal cancer.

George Smith, Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

George, you are a truly evil man. Well done.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I owe it all to ten years of fine particulates and ozone in the soCal air, Ned.

George Smith, Thursday, 20 November 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm, I've been here twice as long, ergo I'm twice as evil.

The following was just posted to Sammy Hagar's official web site, www.redrocker.com

A couple of months ago I called Alex out of the blue because we had run into a mutual friend and both of us said to tell each other "hello". So I said, "I am going to call him" and we talked. Alex said "Hey, next time you are down here call me and we’ll have dinner or lunch or something." So a few weeks ago I was in L.A. I called Al, we had lunch, spent the whole day together. It was great. Reconnecting as friends. That was the end of it. A couple weeks later I talked to Ed on the phone, and a few times since then. It’s like old times as friends but nothing more than that. It’s great to have open communications with some old friends again, much better than being in a maze. If anything develops more from that when the time is right, I will keep you posted.

Revive! News emerges from VHND.net

Van Halen 2004 Tour to start sooner than later?
March 15th, 2004

Earlier rumors suggested that the first shows of the new tour would begin in the middle of June, but sources tell the VHND that dates have been booked a couple of weeks earlier than that on the East Coast. So the world may get its first taste of Van Halen in the New Millennium at the beginning of June or possibly even the end of May! The first shows planned are expected to be indoor arenas, with a stretch of outdoor sheds to follow in the hot Summer Nights of 2004!

The lack of official confirmation from official Van Halen channels has done nothing to silence rumors that continue to surface about the near-term future of the band. Billboard Magazine has broken word that the William Morris Agency , booking agent for some of the biggest acts in music, film, and TV, has signed the band for promotion of this summer's tour. Sources also indicate that all four members have signed on to an agreement with Warner Brothers for the Best Of Volume II, and hopefully for a full studio album to be recorded after the tour. Speculation has run rampant that official confirmation of tour dates and the release of the Best Of album is only a matter of days away, some believing that word may come tomorrow, March 16th, or "316" if you will, after Ed's son Wolfie's birthday and the song of the same name.

While the long-awaited official announcement has yet to materialize, it is worth noting that the www.van-halen.com newsletter has been reactivated and the main page has had a new graphic added. These may not seem earth shattering but for a site that has been virtually unchanged in the last two years these small events are quite remarkable indeed.

And, as of yesterday, tourdates began appearing

2004 Tour dates beginning to seep out
March 22nd, 2004

Clear Channel Entertainment's website is listing the first officially confirmed shows and onsale dates for the 2004 Van Halen reunion tour! This news is breaking so fast that some details are yet unclear so please bear the conflicts below in mind until it's all sorted out.

Mann Music Center Philadelphia, PA
Mellon Arena Pittsburgh, PA
October 10, 2004 - 07:30PM EST
Doors open 6:30 PM
-- Note that this venue on this date is also ascribed to "Incubus with special guest" and Sammy had previously hinted that he would be in Cabo for his birthday around this time.

Despite these listings, the main Clear Channel search page says only "Sorry, there are no [Van Halen] events at this time." In truth, the fact that these dates were discovered by enterprising fans without any fanfare or official announcement of any kind leads many to speculate that this release was not intended at this time. Up-to-the-second rumor has it that we may see this official announcement on Friday, March 26th. A short time after these listings were discovered, VH's official webmaster quietly slipped an alphabetic, dateless list of cities into the long-dormant Tour section of the official Van Halen site.

Hysterics!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, apologies for the neanderthal aesthetic of the source report.

Bloodhound Gang?! Hysterical indeed.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

it's very curious how the entire article doesn't once mention Hagar, but simply refers to the "four members" of Van Halen. Methinks their strategy for this outing will be "David Lee who?".

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...
