CNN reporting right now...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a grubby thing indeed...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Shittt. No, Phil, no!

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

holy crap, it's take down the music bizz week.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It looked like that was going to be the case a few weeks back -- is odd that it's happening right now, but hey, that's procedural matters for you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Or just total coicidence

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna say, didn't they announce this months ago?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, there's a Michael Jackson thing on CNN at the moment.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, they took a second to announce the Spector thing. Really, it's quite a week for Phil: Starsailor record and Beatles "Naked" record coming out, murder charges. He must be plum tuckered out.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I was under the impression he was acquitted.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe they found that the woman had committed suicide, after the initial hub-bub. But I guess when the evidence proved otherwise, they decided that Phil and his mullet toupee were responsible.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

He wasn't acquitted - he was never tried. They just let him go until they had enough evidence to charge him. Apparently, they've got it now?

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It would seem that way, yes.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

What Dave said -- he was released from initial custody but the police were always clear that the investigation was ongoing. Spector crowed about it as being vindication, but that was incredibly naive of him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I think this is awfully convenient, coinciding as it does with the release of Starsailor's new album (w/tracks produced by Phil)

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe all those people are right about Pop music...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

they found enough evidence to have a trial. however flimsy it is, still need a trial to sort everything out. kinda like that kobe thing a couple weeks ago. judge said evidence was pretty shitty, but you know. judicial system being what it is.. phil will have his day in court.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't you think it's a little early to say that the evidence seems "flimsy," if that, indeed, is what you're saying?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

but the whole thing about her committing suicide all began cuz of a letter by spector himself, who clearly is not the man to be trusting in this situation. the police, as far as i know, NEVER bought into that theory.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you guys heard that Starsailor track? It's AWFUL.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 20 November 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

phil hasn't done anything decent in about 2,000 years. Correction: Phil hasn't done anything in 2,000 years. The big thrill left is predicting what wig he'll wear on the stand.

Maybe they could put him in a cell with Wacko. Ebony and Ivory indeed.

rumple, Thursday, 20 November 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Hush you now.

hmmm, Sarah, pre-haps you should put on your Hi-Heeled Sneakers, head over to Hacienda Del Spectoro and pay your respects over a final free-world meal? I suggest you bring your Glock, and don't let The Big Little Man show you "the best way to clean the barrel."

Suggested dinner musique: "Last Date," Floyd Cramer.

Have you guys heard that Starsailor track? It's AWFUL.

Tut-tut. An enterprising record company and p.r. firm could easily refurbish it to capitalize even more on the Phil angle.

I don't think Phil will be able to wear wigs anymore - prison regulations and all.

Debito (Debito), Thursday, 20 November 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you think Michael and Phil might end up sharing a cell?

quite sad how this funny anecdote of leonard cohen from the sessions to death of a ladies' man which spector produced (& fucked up totally) turned sour in the light of the events:

"And at a certain point Phil approached me with a bottle of Manishewitz kosher red wine in one hand and a 45 in the other, put his arm around my shoulder and shoved a revolver into my neck and said, "Leonard, I love you". I said, "I hope you do, Phil". "

She Understands (My Love of Weapons)

Grand jury testimony re Spector investigation, from today's LA Times:

Spector to responding police officer: "What's wrong with you guys? What are you doing? I didn't mean to shoot her. It was an accident."

Spector to his chauffer: "I think I killed somebody."

Spector to Deborah Strand, who asked him to leave her party in Beverly Hills in 1999: "What are you going to say now?" while pointing a handgun at her.

"Two women who dated Spector in the 1990s testified that, in separate instances, the producer used a gun to keep them from leaving his Alhambra home and a posh New York hotel room."

This is quite old I know, but this is VERY incorrect. Prosecutors like to have high conviction rates (many are elected), and will not take a trial to court unless they think they can get a conviction, especially in a high-profile case. They also see money spent on a trial that doesn't yield a conviction as wasted. This is why charges are frequently dropped against people when there is little evidence but a high likelihood of guilt, and also why plea bargaining down to lesser charges for a plea of guilty is so common - on paper, both strategies make a prosecutor seem more effective.
