I would not have survived my adolesence.

[Less melodramatic answers are acceptable]

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 21 November 2003 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if I would have moved back to England... hmmm, possibly.

I wonder if I would have *stayed* in England, though?

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 21 November 2003 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be a zombie.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 21 November 2003 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

there would have been way less time wasted arguing the merits of Byrds b-sides and Burzum albums

ian johno, Friday, 21 November 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i would not exist in any tangible form.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 21 November 2003 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I would probably never had had a relationship in my entire life. Sigh.

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 21 November 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian: But what would you have spent the time doing?

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 21 November 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The evolutionary upshot would be our ears falling off.
Sign-language would be prevalent.

Patrick Kinghorn, Friday, 21 November 2003 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Would there then be a sign language equivalent of music? Or do we just call this 'dance'?

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 21 November 2003 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

would i still be allowed to listen to my washing machine? thats probably close enough for me..

but collecting stamps or coins is a lot less sexy than collecting music...

pete from the street, Friday, 21 November 2003 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Pete: Sonic Youth records are not an exception. They are still music despite all the squall.

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 21 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

:-D

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 21 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

That looks really sad, me laughing at my own crap joke. :-(

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 21 November 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be pretty much the same, but slightly less intelligent and slightly less interesting. Or maybe slightly more intelligent and interesting, since I would have had more time to learn useful things. Who the fuck knows.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

If anyone posted an obscure question on I Love Car Numberplates, I'd be your man.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

heheh.

if we're ruling out experimental non-music music, then I think it means we're deaf. are we aloud to listen to john cage - 3 minutes of silence?

pete from the street, Friday, 21 November 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

My life wouldn't have been a completely worthless fucking mistake

dave q, Friday, 21 November 2003 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

[I like the two ways in which this thread is going at the same time. a) One very personal which is about what music means to us.
b) one very abstract which I think is heading towards a 'what is music?' type area)]

So,

I would not get so utterly irritated by some of my friends and their taste in music. Not that it's bad, just unadventurous.

Is it possible to have no music and still be able to hear?

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I might be dead or in a mental institution.

sorry, no less melodramatic answers are currently available. I can't really imagine it.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

More melodrama is acceptable too.

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 21 November 2003 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

if music didn't exist, i'd probably be into heavy metal!

mandinina (mandinina), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe noone has said this: I think I wuld have a lot more money, if not for all the fucking records I've bought. Also, I would be better at other kinds of trivia.

Magic City (ano ano), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd bang the rocks together and wonder what it meant.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought about the whole more money/time thing but then realsied that I would have just spazzed it all away on something else.

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Girls probably

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I would most likely be a very bored consumer automaton, eating and watching and probably never feeling.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I might actually have a decent university degree, and a proper career, in fact I'd be a doctor or a professor of classics or something. :-(

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I would be lost.

Carlos Ramirez (Carlos Ramirez), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

It would sound like shit when I play the ukelele

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd have a lot more money. I'd probably not have gotten laid that often though.

simon 803 (simon 803), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, bad joke. if it weren't for black sabbath on the radio at night when i was a kid, i would never have had the incentive to do anything in life. i would be mormon.

mandinina (mandinina), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't imagine how other art forms could exist but not music.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

why not?

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i would like movies a lot more (i.e. fuckin underscoring!!!)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd have a lot more free time since I wouldn't be running this radio station. Maybe I would have rushed a sorority out of boredom. . . (ugh)

Elyn (elynbeth), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear lord, don't imagine it. A fate worse than death.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Neil, I guess because music seems too inevitable. I mean, come to think of it, art as a whole seems inevitable, too. Not only can I not imagine what my life would be like without art (it's what I live for), I can't imagine a world like that. It's not like asking, "What would the world be like if JFK hadn't been assassinated?", because that happened relatively recently, in an already established world, as one turn of events among many. For a world to exist without music, though, you'd have to alter the course of evolution starting millions of years ago.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That would leave just the sex and the drugs -- and knitting.

christoff (christoff), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I would have to judge my self-worth by my progress at, like, a career or relationships or something.

*shudder*

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

''I would probably never had had a relationship in my entire life. Sigh.''

I would have probably had a relationship by now. sigh.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd probably have read a lot more, got into theatre, and gone the way of bad sixth-form poetry. Would no doubt have had less friends at school, too. Although I guess they would have had to find something else to fixate on, so we might have still intersected somewhere.

I'd have much less to talk about, that's for sure.

cis (cis), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be sadder - but maybe something would just take its place. Like hockey or something. Actually golf is a good candidate as well.

calstars (calstars), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I would have so much more money in my savings account

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Like Anthony says, I'd have a lot more space in my apartment, and a lot more money in the bank.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd probably be watching a lot more TV and movies.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd invariably be much farther along in a respectable career by now.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be killing time reading the "I Love Architecture" message board.

BrianB, Friday, 21 November 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahahahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I probably wouldn't be alive, but in the odd chance that i survived high school, i'd currently be a classics/philosophy double major instead of residing in this horrible music business program. id also probably be 10*s more of a geek (if that's possible) would have never spoken to a non-related female

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

id also probably be 10*s more of a geek (if that's possible)

True for me too. I would've probably sought solace in comic books and Japanimation and been a hopeless nimrod today. Or at least more of one than I already am.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 November 2003 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

neil's first post and kate's second post OTM

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 22 November 2003 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I would be a restaurant cook still

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 22 November 2003 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheerful Nihilist Grocery Store (mjt), Saturday, 22 November 2003 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe I would have been a supergenius in some other area, but I probably would have offed myself as a teen (not much of an exaggeration, sadly) and if I made it to adulthood, I wouldn't have a job! Hi music! Thanks for my whole life!

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 22 November 2003 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Freshman year in college one of my best friends (who's a bit of a fascist) noted with sadness that if I had been forced to study and appreciate the sciences I might have found a cure for cancer by now or done something else worthwhile.

Some fuckers don't appreciate the foresight, the wisdom, the ingenuity it takes to realize there hasn't been an AC/DC POX yet.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 22 November 2003 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I would be a chronic masturbator...oh wai

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Saturday, 22 November 2003 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

There's been an AC/DC POX, hasn't there?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 November 2003 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i would do nothing but twitch ... oh wait... i would do nothing but twitch arrythmically...

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Saturday, 22 November 2003 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)
