A burning question

Apologies for being a dumbass, but I have a query re: burning CDs.

I use Nero to burn stuff. It's fine. But when I rip'n'burn a CD (for my own personal use of course) a "this CD is copyrighted" message often comes up as I do it.

Presumably that's just a guilt trip tactic to make you think twice before burning stuff, right? I mean, there's no way labels can encode some crazy thing into the CD that informs somebody at the label that somebody somewhere is copying their music, right?

Right?

I've half a mind to turn my modem off while burning, just in case...

I use Nero also and I've seen it do that when I'm burning something I know with 100% certainty is not copyrighted, eg. a CD by a band I play with.

It dun't mean shit. I get that message all the time when I burn CDs from files recorded through the sound card (ie original tapes.)

There's actually a "copyrighted" flag encoded on the CD (in the track subchannels, just like the "pre-emphasis" flag, the UPC/ISRC number, CD-Text and indices). I've never seen a CD that doesn't have this set to "yes" though, just like I've never encountered a cd with pre-emphasis set to "yes".
