Ricardo Villalobos live report

Saw him last night here in Madrid, he's quite a talented fella...teamed up with Dandy Jack all thru the night (they played for about 4-5 hours!), and pretty much tore up the dancefloor...the Alcachofa songs went down pretty well (Easy Lee was incredible), and it was a treat to realize that the album stuff is very "fill-in-the-blanks" and Villalobos filled them out quite nicely with shoegazey samples/subtle Latino-tinged percussion/etc....they also played a couple of songs I'd never heard before (one of them had a chorus that went "cleaning windows", anybody know it?), very poppish, very very satisfying...so, all in all, this guy is GOOD, much much better gig than Luomo a couple of months ago...

sounds amazing! what's his setup like? does he use 2 and a laptop, or 3 turntables?

it's his laptop + dandy jack's + 2 turntables (he didn't DJ, he would just mix the laptop stuff onto an LP sometimes to take a break) + mixer and assorted gizmos

not much of a techie, sorry...

Thanks for the report. I'm a big fan of his percussive sound, but I also love the way he opens things up by sparsely peppering colourful little motifs throughout his mixes and productions. His tracks are a ton of fun to mix with!
