So, anyone have a soft spot for these guys? It was as if these folks and the Virgin Prunes were the only bands in a scene of two -- protogoth and all but also a weird combination of cabaret, tempo shifts, T. Rex fandom and trying to avoid conventional (for them, I guess) song construction and performances. A song like "Sebastiane" is just slippery and weird, you can't quite put your finger on any part of it as being the core of the tune. And then of course there's donut bitch's favorite SGC number in honor of Charlie Chaplin -- "FUNNY MAN! FUNNY LITTLE MAN!"

I've loved what I heard... grossly underrated proto-goth-math-rock. I need to pick up some anthology CD of theirs.

And of course... "SebAAAST-iAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!"

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm listening to "Into the Abyss" right now and it's fucked up. In a very good way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Are they at all like Alien Sex Fiend? I have Here Cum Germs and remember liking it.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely associated with the same general scene (the Batcave club and all that) but no direct connection. ASF were much more of an Alice Cooper/Cramps type of thing -- straightforward but equally entertaining!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Am intrigued. Share an mp3, please?

Miggie (Miggie), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Batcave! that's one of my favorite "genre" names ever....I forgot about it. Alien Sex Fiend was part of a brief teenage flirtation with goth (which thankfully never got to the dressing up goth stage)...Alien Sex Fiend were pretty funny, not very serious. Was batcave considered part of goth or was it a different scene altogether?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

You'd have to ask someone who was there, I think. There WAS an actual club called the Batcave but allegedly the only band directly signed out of it was Specimen; everyone else just seemed to stumble across it having already been doing their own thing.

Damnit! Answer the question! We can sit here all day if you want to. You goths are real wise guys, aren't you?

(thanks for the info)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Weren't Skeletal Family the Batcave's house band before they were signed?

Last year, I bought a double CD of Sex Gang's finest moments for a pound in a Fopp sale. Brought back some great memories. Sadly my two faves 'Beasts' and 'Mayer' were conspicuous by their absence.

Wonderfully odd band though.

Marcel Gallingez (Marcel Gallingez), Friday, 21 November 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved em and andy sex gang until I watched em at the I-Beam in San Francisco. My collection was sold the next day. How did he turn them into a f-in Guns n roses nightmare? The older stuff brilliant.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Saturday, 22 November 2003 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit I've been looking for some of this stuff for a long time. I can't find any reliable guide to which one to get (AMG useless since it only grades a couple of many albums.) Can anyone kindly suggest the best one? Thanks.

The Hungry Years fookin' rooooooooooooolz.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

A duet with Marc Almond at that. No bad thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

ah yes, the song on the whip! I still need to snag a copy of that.

I'm thinking of the Best Of comp, The Hungry Years.

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

"Deiche" and "Mauritia Mayer" are aces in my book

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 12:03 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder what happened to my 'The Whip' tape. How coome so many people ended up owning th

CLE

Hot underrage age in bondage gear, yo

Granted, very different than the original grey/black/white cover with the big monster hand whisking you in with the big finger. Whoudda though Cleopatra Records would have changed the art on that release, and moreover amended the comp with newer bands on their roster? Shock and Shlock I tell you!

dottie nuttie dach nach dtnt hhhhhhhh (donut), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

"Mauritia Mayer" may very well be the greatest close-to-10-minutes goth epic ever made.

dottie nuttie dach nach dtnt hhhhhhhh (donut), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

Yaaay! Apparently they played here a month or so ago. I miss out. :/

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

They are apparently TEH CRAP now, Ms. Jessie, so do not fret.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

I should have known if they were playing CHARLOTTE.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I've heard it's some G n' R type action...

but wait, I thought that Andi Sex Gang was in jail and they t'rew away the key?

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

Well that would be wrong.

I need to review what albums I have, exactly. I do have Andi's solo album from the late eighties around, which is kinda bleh but does have a few really good songs on it (he pretty much fully brings out the T. Rex obsession there).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:21 (nineteen years ago)

So, the tales of Andi being arrested at some point on a sexual deviancy charge are completely false? That is indeed good news... I'd heard some pretty foul things from multiple sources...

Mallory L . O'Donnell (That Bitch Camille), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

four years pass...

POOR MAURITIA MAY-YYEEEERRRR

aerosmith: the acid house years (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 18 November 2010 02:02 (fourteen years ago)

I bought a CD of these guys when I lived in Idaho because it had a song on it called "Ida-ho." The hyphen should have clued me in that it wasn't about the state.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Thursday, 18 November 2010 02:51 (fourteen years ago)

Abbott you are the genius of brief anecdotes!

I'll have to play some of this later.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 November 2010 04:20 (fourteen years ago)

The name put me off, because it reminded me more of the old Opal Fruits ad.

"Fresh with the tang of Citrus" or "Fresh with the Sex Gamg Children"

(just me, then)
