Comments on the (excellent) article to follow - but anyone wanting to sample some of Russell's disco work themselves should get to the GrokePile where I'll be uploading a few songs through the course of the day. (Feel free to sign in and mark my choices good, too, ha).

Cool article Jess, just one minor point - there is a split Richard Maxfield/Harold Budd CD still available on New World Records called 'The Oak of the Golden Dreams', and there's also a fabbo track by Maxfield on the 'Ohm' box set.

Coming soon - articles on Ray Russell and John Russell?

Andrew L, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There might be photos from the Lord John Russell on Marchmont Street.

Tom, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, free improv must surely be the next step on from karaoke - The Spontaneous I Love Music Ensemble?

Andrew L, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh am I considered uncool to read this article? I can't seem to find the page.

nathalie, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i can't get into any of freakytrigger.co.uk at the moment...

m jemmeson, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Semms to be working for me, anyway. Two more Russell tracks in the GrokePile, too.

Tom, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah the site's back up again. temporary glitch - was getting a 'page moved or unavailable' response for any page from yr hosting co...

m jemmeson, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Andrew - as soon as I sat down and read the article on the site today, I immediately remembered the Maxfield CD, which I haven't heard but recall a review of by David Toop a year or two back in Der Vire. But, a CDNow, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble search gives me a big fat goose egg for Maxfield records, so I think the point's still valid. (And the Maxfield track on Ohm is muy excellente as you said.)

Anyone looking for hard copies of Russel's work: the songs Tom has posted on ye olde Grokepile all come from the way rad Disco Not Disco comp. from last year. "Go Bang" (the mostly fondly revered Russell disco production) is available on one of the volumes of David Mancuso's "Loft" series (which one I don't remember since I'm at work right now.) Nuphonic has been promising a collection of Russell dance productions for some time now. No news on their website as of the time I subbed the piece to Ned. "Another Thought" is still in print and widely available, and "World of Echo" occasionally turns up used.

And thanks to everyone for their kind words.

Now someone rip me a new arsehole already! ;)

jess, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be putting up "Go Bang" and "Is It All Over My Face" on the GrokePile tomorrow, too!

It's in the Article Response category now. Hard to find with a subject line like that, mister.

jess, Thursday, 28 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In the interests of fostering amity for the upcoming peace conference, I have nothing to add to that, other than I think it's time for bed.

Well..I also liked- enjoyed I think I might say, these ideas in word form typed I guess you could say by someone called Jess.I kind of missed the boat, fell short, lost touch, arrived too late...didn't I? things about Arthur Russell written in 2001. But Maybe I can redeme myself, make good, help out, save the day- First,I must tell you where you can find some arthur on vinyl..speak to my friend Nick (www.djfriendly.co.uk) Second, I believe it's safe to say Nuphonic will sadly not be putting out any of AR's unheard music...I have also fallen for this man called arthur.... p.s I've got a mint copy of Mr Russells classic 12" > LOLA "I need more" on vinylmania 015. I know you won't find this in a hurry & I'll be putting it on ebay soon..get in touch if your interested.

I believe it's safe to say Nuphonic will sadly not be putting out any of AR's unheard music.

So, Nuphonic really is going under huh? What a shame if so.

I loved this article. One of my favs of FT.

Um, this article is like, really really good. I had never read it before. Among the best stuff I've read from our Jesster. Anyway, I thought I'd revive it in light of the ongoing Russell appreciation. And the fact that I'm drunk and listening to Calling Out of Context.

HEY! I just won The Necessaries' Big Sky record off Ebay. Is it any good? I bid on it because AR is on it but I'm unsure what to expect. Supposed to be "New Wave"...
