Acoustic guitars and sweeping strings

Can anyone suggest any choice acoustic folk or rock artists? Melodic, rockin', classic stuff, ideally mixed with strings.

Have recently been checking out a couple of successes like Leo Kottke ('The Driving of the Year Nail' blows me away), Peter Lang ('Red Meat on the Road'), but have also fallen victim to a host of depressing failures courtesy of Amazon...

Am now desperate and manically searching for music that sparks - too much mediocrity in my collection!

Guidance welcomed - if anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it.

Cheers.

Acoustic guitars and sweeping strings? Sounds like you need a dose of The Zephyres.

If you like Kottke and Lang, check out the Michael Gulezian Unspoken Intentions cd on Takoma, if you haven't already. No sweeping strings present, but you really don't want those do you?

Try these... i've added a suggested (exemplifying) song from each.

Nina Nastasia ("Ocean")
Damien Rice ("The Blower's Daughter")
Okkervil River ("Seas too far to reach")
The Frames ("Seven Day Mile")
Van Morrison ("Sweet Thing")

not much in the way of strings, but i am currently loving Shirley Collins & Davy Graham's "Folk Roots, New Routes" and C.O.B.'s "Spirit of Love", two revelatory records. when i need a dose of sublime strings i always throw "Expecting to Fly" on.
