Britney in Rio: is this retarded?

Stumbled upon all this music webzine/blog stuff a week or so ago, am still amazed that such things really do exist (being a newcomer and all)... anyway, I've noticed that many of you are quite fond of Ms Spears, and I was wondering if you've heard the 'Swearing backstage' mp3 that's doing the rounds on Napster at the moment. Someone had the tape recorder on a minute before she was to go onstage to perform at Rock in Rio, and now you too can hear her sounding like: a)a spoilt primadonna, b)cheap-porn diva ("Oh my gaaahd! What are they dooooing?"), c)basically, someone not bestowed with spectacular intellectual capacity ("This is retarded!", indeed). Already, people have started posting the "swearing" remixes (including a particularly feeble 'Fuck Me Baby One More Time'). If you haven't heard it, get it, and if you have, answer: does this revelation of "the real" Britney (if the recording in question is not fake) alter your perception of Britney Spears and her music? Do you think that the spell's been broken, or you don't care at all? Do you adore her even more, or hate her more after this?

First of all, hello and welcome!

Secondly, if you'd asked me to predict what Britney is like in 'real life' (not that I have any idea of how backstage at a 75000 gig might relate to real life as I know it) I'd have said slightly dim and prima-donnaish, probably not as totally bratty as Aguilera comes off as. So this swearing thing comes as no surprise and fits my picture generally - she's 18 for heaven's sake, of course she swears! If she'd said "Bother!" or something I'd have been way more shocked.

As for whether it changes my perception of her music, no, not a bit. I think Britney's pretty much irrelevant to her records anyway (though they don't sound like anyone else's, oddly, so maybe it's only Britney's personality that's irrelevant). I find the idea of a real-life Britney existing and doing things a bit annoying, almost - I'd prefer it if she never left the studio....

Er, what Tom said.

Really though, what possible perception of Britney could you have that would be broken by a few swear words? I would have thought it patently obvious that she was not a hail-mary kissing convent girl, and if anything her entire persona deliberately *hints* at much more than the Rio exchange reveals.

No, no, you got me all wrong, Tim. I wasn't "shattered" by the said audio piece (I'm not even a Britney fan, although I do thoroughly enjoy the Hits, like everyone else), I just thought it was fun and intriguing. And some non-Britney-loving people I know seemed to like her more after hearing it, too. Anyway, I'm off to make a garage bootleg out of it. (Just kidding.)

Actually, one could make a rather good gabber/breakcore chune out of all that swearing!!! :)
