From Popbitch:

>> This beat is Techno-tranny <<
Mister-sister impersonates Ya Kid K

A Columbian man, Jaime Esfels, has been arrested
in Bucharest, Romania for impersonating Ya
Kid K, the female rapper with Belgian
dance act Technotronic. Esfels had been given
VIP treatment by clubs, hotels and radio stations
and had rapped live to Technotronic tracks in
clubs across Romania, where the band still has
a loyal following. Police were tipped off by a
fan who noticed Esfels using the men's toilet.

Okay, Esfels, stop posting on here already!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"Pump Up the Volume." A great sample, and a great bass break. Plug in the headphones, yo!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"Pump Up The volume" was a landmark record for sampling! "Pump Up The Jam" was a landmark record in euro-cheese crapness! The central breakdown drum sample in PUTV was Graham Central Stations "The Jam".PUTV virtually started the cross-pollinational sample-based string of house records back in 1987; its amazing scratching prowess, sample selections and use of Eric Be & Rakim's vocal hook was a masterstroke for its time.

No doubt about it: PUTV 100% Phat! - PUTJ: 100% Wack!

Pump Up The Volume wins, if you're referring to the movie starring Christian Slater.

billstevejim, Monday, 24 November 2003 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

PUTV > PUTJ!!!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Monday, 24 November 2003 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

"Pump Ab Das Beer" is worth (soul) seeking out, as I've mentioned elsethread.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 24 November 2003 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Pump Up The Jam.

RS LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 14 July 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

Both classic.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 14 July 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

Who said Ya Kid K? No! It was in fact Felly, complete with that fetching late 1980s clubbing accessory, the black "bum-bag". Ya Kid K was on "Get Up (Before The Night Is Over)".

But M/A/R/R/S wins, obviously.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 14 July 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

"Pump Up the Jam". My fave Technotronic tune, and I still love the "And only for you" or whatever that she sings across the outro.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Thursday, 14 July 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

mike, was it not Ya Kid K really tho? the voice is exactly the same!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 14 July 2005 09:13 (twenty years ago)

obv. the girl in the video is not Ya Kid K so perhaps by Felly they just meant the video girl who was miming the track ala the Blackbox vocalist on 'Ride On Time' (altho she still managed to sound a fair bit like Loleatta Hathaway on the later records). It was pretty common in Europe for this sort of thing to happen (Mill Vanilli etc.).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 14 July 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

Ah. I think you may have a point there, Steve...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 14 July 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

yeah, Felly was the girl in the video only, Ya Kid K was being "difficult" re management and royalties and so forth. Obv. she got some of the former by the time the next single came out (and they had to get Felly to stand in the background while the camera panned past so people still knew it was the same band...)

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 14 July 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

I figured it was just because they wanted someone more 'attractive' to front the track?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 14 July 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

The correct answer is Pump It Up by Elvis Costello.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 14 July 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

jesus this is tough.

I guess "Pump Up the Volume," but it's fucking close.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 14 July 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

I actually kinda liked Technotronic at the time, but after seeing the video for "Pump Up the Jam" recently (featuring the dizzyling unconvincing Felly attempting to replicate Ya Kid K), I have to say that it hasn't aged especially well.

"Pump Up the Volume" still sounds incredible and timeless to me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 14 July 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

MARRS for sure. I loathe "pump up the jam"

Brett Hickman (Bhickman), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

PUTV brings back a lot of memories.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Both are classic, but I'd say "Pump up the Volume" is more impressive than expressive, affecting the lizard parts of the brain and resulting in immediate feet-tap recognizition/reaction, whereas "Pump up the Jam" plucks the heart and harkens the sort of atavistic instincts of teenage, when nothing was and never should be ironic - and how right we were then!

Since I'm a shameless romantic, I pick Technotronic.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 14 July 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh my god, that Jaime Esfels story upthread is great!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Reminds of the story about the man who fooled people he was Stanley Kubrick even though he didn't look like him at all, because no one knew what Stanley Kubrick looked like.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

The central breakdown drum sample in PUTV was Graham Central Stations "The Jam".

and the latter break is Holy Ghost by the Bar-Kays.
